Shakira Loves File-Sharing; Says Music is a Gift

Shakira is a huge fan of file-sharing because she claims it brings her closer to her fans.

An awful lot of artists don't like file-sharing and their argument is pretty simple. If you don't pay for the music, they don't get paid for their work. Artist Lilly Allen recently took a stand against file-sharing, claiming it wasn't doing British music or new comers any good and slamming the likes of Pink Floyd's Nick Mason and Ed O'Brien from Radiohead who support file-sharing.

However, Colombian-born Shakira has hit back saying she supports those who share music online: "I like what's going on because I feel closer to the fans and the people who appreciate the music. It's the democratization of music in a way. And music is a gift. That's what it should be, a gift."

The news comes after Lily Allen took her anti-piracy blog offline, supposedly because part of her post was ripped directly from an article on TechDirt.

the youtube is a perfect example of quality user generated quality content , powered by the democratic medium - internet , which also needs to remain neutral in the future .

how about collaborative game development ? i bet that the collective efforts of millions of gamers would result in a supremely optimized free experience for all . but there are a few hassles : driver support , which really need to be open source to take max advantage of hardware , and something like a customized gamedev engine , like media wiki for wikipedia . remember , software is not hardware , it can flow like information . and i bet great free gaming software would in turn increase hardware sales too !

imagine if crysis or any other game was developed with the care of millions of minds !

it has come up again , that to take advantage of hardware we need support from the companies themselves !

Indaba. No, I didn't just slap my keyboard and make a fake word... that's what the site you're talking about is called.

Related to the article, Shakira seems like a really cool person. Recent positive press suggests that she hasn't lost perspective, that she hasn't "sold out"... which puts her above 90% of other artists of her popularity. Meanwhile, I had to google who Lily Allen even was.

i am sure quite a few of our own tom's readers are more than capable on the software side of game development ! if u wanna get interested consider this : how great it is to create an immersive game , when it is fun to just play it ? the possibilites are endless with the hardware coming up : mimd shaders , c++ like environment with openCL and openGL etc !

Amen, the Radio is free, of course you have to listen to Ad's all day, but it's still free to anyone with a radio. Music should also be free to people with computers!

Ps. After watching that Shakira video, when i die, i'd like to return as shakira's spandex suit... Giggidy!

You should also add that along with her "copy/paste" episode when trying to battle the evil pirates, Lily is well known to have distributed free music from other artist straight from her website. If I remember correctly there were at least a couple of mixtapes that she put together with tracks from 15-20 other artist that she released and distributed for the sole purpose of promoting herself. No royalties were ever paid for this as well as no permission was ever given by the other studios to use that music.

She needs to give it up and just do porn. And speaking of porn...Shakira should do porn as well. While I am on the subject...fyi...I have a video camera and I will gladly file-share that thing with the world free of charge.

Lily Allen started out with just a MySpace Music page and it got her a record feal. She should be all for sharing, imo.

Shakira is fine, and I keep learning more about her that makes my respect (along with my boner) grow more for her. You know she dresses down and takes college courses for fun? She's like Princess Jasmine, and I could totally be her Aladdin.

A lot of artists in the US are FOR sharing, but won't say so to the media for obvious reasons. I don't even remember how many times I have heard at a show "i have a new record coming out; go buy it, download it, or however you have to get it just get it because that's why I'm here". What I remember noticing is that the number of times I have heard "don't share my record on limewire cause that would be stealing" is ZERO. Maybe I just tend to listen to/attend music performed by decent people, not media whores.

The problem with record sharing isn't with the artists... it's with the record industry and RIAA - why? because they are made up of lawyers... and we all know lawyers are spawns of hell.

That is, unless that particular lawyer is saving you from going to federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison...

Until now I just thought she was a commercial product. I still don't like her music or singing but I now respect her because of her views.

I'm even more impressed by the fact that a serious musician like Nick Mason supports file sharing though. Having Pink Floyd support file sharing is massive.

While I'm not a fan of Shakira's music, I applaud her for this. What a lot of people don't know is that most artists don't make jack off record sales. Due to the slavery contracts that most record companies (who are represented by the RIAA hmmm...) make them sign. The only way they can really hope to make money is through touring and merchendise sales. If you've ever heard of Steve Albini, he wrote a really good essay on the record industry entitled The Problem With Music" ] Note that this contains quite a bit of profanity, so if you're easily offended, don't click this link.
