Last week saw a much anticipated firmware update for the PS3 finally make its way to users. In the run up to the launch PS3 fans could talk about nothing else. Unfortunately, this was also the case after the release of firmware update v2.40.
v2.40 went online late last week and while many installed the update with no problems, Sony announced that it received a “low volume of calls” from users. Complaints ranged from being unable to install the update to the update completely crashing the console. As a result of this, Sony said it had decided to take the update offline so it could work out the kinks.
While Sony announcing it was pulling the update via the PlayStation blog, there was no word of when the company would be re-releasing the update to the masses. However, a post from Eric Lempell, Director of PlayStation Operations, appeared late yesterday that detailed the launch of the release of v2.41.
“Hi, everyone. As many of you know, we released PS3 firmware update v2.40 last week, but had to take it offline temporarily because, for a limited number of users, the XMB wouldn’t display after the update was installed. We’ve been able to fix the problem, and I’m happy to report that firmware update v2.41 will be released shortly.
We want to extend our apologies to the PlayStation community for any inconvenience. Now we’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone online and racking up those trophies!”
Unfortunately the blog doesn’t mention anything about the crashed PS3s but it looks like users are still grateful to Sony for being so quick to solve the problem. Comments on the blog posting include,
“You guys really jumped on fixing that. Shows your dedication and even admitted the problem, unlike an unmentionable competitor cough Red ring of death.”
“Great news Eric! Glad to see how dedicated the team is on providing quick solutions to problems as they arise.
Thanks a tonne for your enormous contribution to the PlayStation community!”
Let us know whether or not you’ve updated to 2.41 and if you’ve had any further problems with it.

Gosh,if only computer manufacturers were like this *cough AMD cough Intel cough Nvidia cough*
2.41 downloaded without a hitch and the XMB works in games, but to access certain features (such as system settings) the game must be exited. But did you really expect it any other way? Only complaint is that trophies don't scan your current saved game data and look for things you have already accomplished. No biggie though. Good job Sony! I really think they are on a roll right now and the tables could turn in the next year.

I haven't updated mine (after 2.40 I just decided to wait a lil bit after every release just to be sure), but I heard of people complaining about not being able to hear their songs on GTAIV. Is that just because the game has no support or the option of hearing your own music is out of this update?
I also haven't heard of any crashes since then. Anyone?
I downloaded/installed 2.41 with no problems. I figured it must've been a patch firmware since I saw the trophy icons after the PS3 rebooted. I wasn't expecting a fix that fast considering it took a long time to get this kind of firmware to begin with. After reading some of the message boards/blogs it sounded like the crash some people were experiencing was from an incomplete download that for some reason might not have resumed. Apparently it was a hefty update. Another apparent reason was because their systems might have had the automatic disc start option on which might've cause some glitch. In any case 2.41 worked perfectly for me.
