Amazon, Wal-Mart Sell Pre for $99.99 and $79.99

Two major retailers have started offering Palm's Pre for under a hundred bucks.

Over the weekend, both Amazon and Wal-Mart started offering the Palm Pre for $99.99 and $79.99, respectively. While this may or may not have something to do with the possibility of the Pre coming to Verizon (to be honest, I missed all that because I was busy being charged hundreds of Euro to have my dentist keep three of my molars), it's still a pretty sweet deal for those of you who plan to stay on Sprint but don't feel like paying a ridiculous amount of money for a smartphone.

However, it does make for rather confusing news when you consider that Palm will soon offer the Pixi, a sort of stripped down Pre that comes in the form of a neat, little candybar phone. Given that the Pixi was announced just after the Pre's price was cut from $199 to $149, many assumed that the Pixi would be in or around the hundred-buck mark.

How many of you are tempted to buy a Pre now that it's so cheap? Granted they still come with a 2-year contract but it's a steal for those of you already tied to Sprint for one reason or another.

I would have picked one up if it had been on Verizon, I may still pick it up if it comes to Verizon early next year. Overall the Pre seems to mix a good number of the best features from the various Blackberries along with some of the best features of the iPhone.

Cool but... Pre doesn't have vocal command.
Blackberries or iPhone are still the best choice.

Almost everyone where I work has a Pre and I've got to say that they are the best phone to come out since the iPhone. Palm just needs to get their app store going to be able to compete with the iPhone. The iPhone isn't the perfect phone but the fact that you can get about a million apps to do whatever you want makes it pretty awesome.

Once this comes to Verizon it's going to be very tempting...

@pmerritt - Forwarding emails works fine on my pre. I haven't tried editing pictures but I wouldn't expect that. Setting multiple alarms works fine... I didn't have to download any apps for those things to work.

I know nothing about the Palm pre... Hence me not caring about a lower price. PLUS I use a wireless network that is not compatable.

This makes me wonder how much Pre on Verizon is going to cost. You can bet Verizon will charge more than $79 for them, though if they were smart, they would blow them out at $99 and then reap all the $45/mo unlimited data plans they could.

Once the Pre comes to Verizon, there will be *many* more hackers and coders disassembling the ROM and cooking new ones with features re-enabled (features that Verizon likes to disable, such as tethering and GPS navigation).

I think that I am waiting for Verizon to carry the Pre at which point I will jump ship from Sprint to Verizon.
