CES 2010: Optoma Debuts Two 3D Projectors
3D is the dominant tech at CES 2010, and Optoma is on the bandwagon with two 120 Hz 3D DLP projectors.
There is no ignoring 3D at CES 2010. From Sony and Panasonic to Nvidia and Optoma, 3D is literally popping out at you around every corner.
Optoma, one of the better-known projector brands, gave me a quick demo of their new DLP-based 120 Hz 3D projectors. Dubbed the GT360 and GT720, both projectors are capable of throwing high-quality 120 Hz 3D images against a wall or projector screen.
There were two separate demos: one for 3D and one for "standard" 2D gaming. Even in 2D, the GT720 did an excellent, lag-free job with Virtua Fighter on the 360. The GT720 is a WXGA (1280x800) that can utilize a "widescreen display with support of up-to 1080p resolution." The GT720 was also powering the 3D cinema demo, specifically "Spy Kids 3D". The shutter glasses, designed by Texas Instruments, are very similar to the 3D Vision glasses used by Nvidia, and they are powered by a disposable watch battery. The demo pair worked flawlessly, with no black flicking like on some Nvidia demo models.
According to the marketing folks at Optoma, the GT360 is a "Wii projector". This is due to the lower SVGA (800x600) tech. Since the Wii maxes out at 480p, the GT360 is a less expensive alternative for bringing Mario and Link into 3D.

1280x800 - 720p, not horrible but I've had one of those for years... my next projector will be 1080p at least.
And when a projector marketing dweeb claims that their 1280x800 unit supports "Up to 1080p" I get the urge to punch them in the face and scream "LIAR!"... then kick them while they're down.
Agreed. Consumers don't need anymore confusion. It just makes everything step down to 720P anyways.

According to that, they'll be priced at $499 and $699.
$699 is not bad at all for a projector that can do 720p in 3D.
720p? Give us 1080p.
give me "Pacman 3d" then i'll think about it
Can it play Crysis?
I don't get to take a look at all this new stuff. The only thing my local Fry's has is a 3D monitor that requires 3D eyeglasses. I didn't like it. It didn't look very good and it hurt my eyes.
I hate that everyone is pushing 3D with shutter glasses, its an obvious choice for the companies (since you'll be paying through your nose for the glasses). Sucks for consumers considering your $2000 3d HDTV is going to end up being closer to $3000 once you go out and buy 4 sets of glasses to go with it.
With DLP technology, they should be able to polarize the color-wheel to allow viewing with non-powered glasses. The tradeoff would be that you need to buy a non-depolarizing screen (silver screen). Either way, a 1080p/120hz/3000lum projector should be on its way soon, although 3D Blu-ray movies will only be 720p.
