Office 2010 Technical Testing Ends April 30

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

The Microsoft Office 2010 release candidate testing is about to come to a close.

With the official release of Microsoft Office 2010 just around the corner, users of the Microsoft Office 2010 release candidate are now getting notices that the "technical testing" period--which began on February 5th--is quickly coming to a close. Those using Microsoft Office Mobile 2010 beta are also receiving "thank you" notices, as that particular program recently expired back on April 5.

But as for the release candidate testing period, IT-Chuiko reports that it doesn't end until April 30, and will naturally lead the way to the official RTM build. Office 2010 is scheduled to ship for business customers on May 12, and then to general consumers on June 15.

As we've reported multiple times in the past, Office 2010 Starter will be limited and ad-ridden, but will also be free to use. Office Professional Academic will cost $99, Office Home and Student will retail for $149, Office Home and Business for $279, and the full-blown Office Professional will cost a meaty $499.

For consumers who were using the Office Mobile 2010 beta, Microsoft launched a Q&A right here. Both the questions and answers are somewhat obvious (will I lose my documents if I uninstall the beta? No!), however Microsoft also provides an awkward apology for the inconvenience of terminating the beta. But, as the company pointed out, the expiration date was mentioned in the product terms of use.

Consumers who are currently using the full-blown, public beta of Microsoft Office 2010 can still breathe: the suite won't expire until October 2010. "Users can choose to download the trial or buy the full version of Office 2010 at that time," Microsoft said.

Only really need MS Word personally. For everything else, I use OpenOffice. Yes, I could use OpenOffice to replace word, however, I'm addicted to the new features (new Text effects, etc) in Word 2010.

I was a beta tester for Office 2010 and I don't see any reason to upgrade from 2007 for a long time. I will someday but it's not a high on my to do list.

MS Power point is another reason I use office. It is miles beyond open office in the amount of features. Same with MS Word. Luckily I'm not needing to do as many Power points in college

I really appreciate the improved startup time in 2010, along with streamlined look and feel. If anything I think it's worth the upgrade.

I am a beta tester and I really like all the new features from sharing and the ease of use. I just hope that college students get a good discount from the retail price. Office 2007 was selling at my college for only $60 a few months ago. And OpenOffice doesnt work for me because all I do is Powerpoint Presentations and Word, and OpenOffice has a really annoying Auto-numbering and Auto-Correct and Auto-indent that gets on my nerves easily.

That is true assuming you don't use a lot of the new features. For example, I am currently addicted to the new Text Effect in 2010.
