Microsoft: We Should've Done More, We're Slow
Microsoft would rather focus on the future rather than the latest trend.
Recently managing director of Microsoft Research Asia Hsiao-Wuen Hon admitted that the company is somewhat slow in embracing consumer appetites. The statements reflects the company's string of "me too" products such as its Bing search engine, the Zune MP3 player, its online marketplace, and even its upcoming smartphone. The word "innovation" hasn't applied to Microsoft in a very long time.
"Looking back I can say we probably should have done more in the consumer space," he told The Sydney Morning Herald. "When we talk about an 'enterprise user' they are actually the same person because when they go home they are consumers."
He admitted that Microsoft isn't exactly the "media darling," saying that many people use its products but don't perceive the company as innovative. But he also added that Microsoft's 800 scientists, sociologists, psychologists, mathematicians, physicists and engineers are scattered throughout the world, set out to "solve everything from spiraling population growth to the need for a 3D mouse."
Ultimately it appears that Microsoft isn't out to push the latest device onto the market, but rather to direct its attention to the needs of consumers five to ten years from now. That means making sure everyone on the planet has a PC, or to create an environment where NUIs (natural user interaction) takes precedent over old-school GUIs.
Hon said that Project Natal and Windows 7 will take that first step.
"When we do invent something first like the Natal kind of scenario, while we have a researcher working with the product group for the first version, we already have a researcher thinking about the second version down the road so we certainly hope we will continue to be holding that technology," he said. "I really love what Microsoft is doing."

Please find my post from few days ago when I said exactly the same thing and i got 200 negative marks from the MS Fanboys...
I guess Mr. Hon will get a bunch of hate mail for admitting Microsoft's shortcomings
Microsoft hasn't really done anything new or innovative in nearly a decade, and the sad part is it took them this long to realize it. Yea, good call, Microsoft IS slow...
lol Nice Euphoria. I feel the same about MS. I do not see how this is news when one can clearly come to these conclusions by observation?
Well it's good that they are realizing what they need to do I just hope they get their sh*t together and they bring something innovative on the table. We need stronger and better competition ...
Sure microsoft, you haven't been too innovative, but when you hold such a large market share there are responsibilities to be looked after. smaller companies are more at liberty to specialize and innovate in a smaller product segment. Just keep working to help alleviate some of the worlds problems, the ones you can make a difference in, and continue refining the products that have made you who you are. The world is still behind you.
I wonder how long he will have a job, talking like that...
@shoota: thats a lame excuse. Yes MS is big corporation, but still it has many departments that work and develop independently.
Thus Windows 7 development group has nothing to do with Zune or Zbox 360. Each of these departments have their own budgets and resources, so your excuse that MS is too big to take care of every product is lame... It's business and money and if they are not efficient enough they will lose money. That is why they have R&D to research the market, see where the demand is and develop a product that will meet that demand.
Also sometimes they need to be innovative, and take risks by producing a product that is new in the market but that will create it's own niche group of users...
Microsoft is nothing but R&D but primarily for software products and yes they have been innovative but not to the point of saying we came out with it first because too many things we know Apple did first.
microsoft is not a consumer company. they may make products for consumers but they are not oriented based on the needs of the consumers. this is why when "the company is somewhat slow in embracing consumer appetites", it suggest that they are not in touch with the consumers, only what they, as a company, are interested on.
look at the situation with the wii when it was first release, you had the ceo, bill gates, calling motion controls a gimmick and a fad. now we have natal. it shows that microsoft is not in touch with the public consumer.
if consumers aren't interested in upgrading to windows vista or windows 7, then why is microsoft, as a company, forcefully have their xp users switch to windows 7. it is because they aren't in touch with the idea that people don't care about the operating system but what you do as the end product on the operating system.
microsoft is not a consumer based company.
Windows 7 was my idea.

Now maybe in 10 years they'll start doing something about it
lol.....
nah i think dat they will cum up wid sumthing new nd cool pretty fast
Microsoft is pretty innovative in the enterprise domain, they are just a bit slow in the consumer market. Google is really the only big tech company that actually seems to innovate.

Not being MS fanboy, but Hon said Windows 7 and Project Natal are innovations. I would have to agree with Hon on the Project Natal part. You, however, said nothing MS does is innovative EVER. Sounds like you're just a hater.
Natal is a very cool concept. I realize that it is just thought of as an XBox 360 add on right now, but hopefully it is also being natively coded to utilize at least 6, if not 12 CPU threads.
One cool use would be the use of a virtual keyboard and mouse. No, not one of those silly laser projected things, but the computer analyzing the subtle gestures of your hands and fingers and "seeing" the virtual keyboard.
MS is making sure that we'll all purchase bloated operating systems way too large for our needs!
It would do well to sell a Windows framework, with upgrade patches for each different version (like eg: a server patch, a gaming patch, a media center patch, etc...), and keep the cost of a Windows down to a minimum.
I guess vista was made for the future....then future is crap.....
Food for thought MS
Microsoft's idea is to steal product ideas from other companies and pass them off as their own.
MS has been down and out for a couple of years thats for sure but it takes a bit to admit it, Win 7 was a massive first step in getting wat the consumer wants, natal is a massive step forward in interactive entertainment, and they have released their bluetrak mice which work on any surface including glass.. damn thats an awesome mouse... So they are stepping up to the plate more recently
Microsoft's idea is to steal product ideas from other companies and pass them off as their own.
Every large corporate entity grows by purchasing technology rights from smaller, high risk companies, once they have established its value. The business world is littered with companies who have a singular goal to come up with a good technology, product, patent, etc and sell it to a giant company for a profit.
I don't really see anything wrong with this. It lets a company large enough to do something with the technology get it to the people, while the guys who cooked it up get paid off better than if they had done it in an internal lab.
MS have always been happy for others to do the innovation, while the do the imitation, and to be fair they aren't totally terrible at it.

I believe they've done this very thing with MCE, Ultimate, Pro, Home, Basic, and downgrade rights to XP on the consumer side. On the server side, you've got Foundation, 2008 w/ downgrade rights to 2003, Standard, Datacenter, Enterprise DC, etc.
But really, I've got 18GB worth of C:\Windows (7 64bit Ultimate) and I really don't care. For once in the history of an OS release, inexpensive hardware is so far beyond the 'recommended' specs, a little bloat makes about no difference; it only adds features. Games have no perceivable difference than when I ran them on Vista or XP, and I can run a virus scan on that bloated OS while in BC2 and not experience a visible difference in responsiveness.
I think what I'm trying to say: If Windows 7 seems bloated, it might be time to upgrade your hardware. It is cheap.
Microsoft is nothing but a exploitive copycat company. It started with a Windows 3.1 copied from Apple and not stopped since. Did I mention they are also a convicted monopolist.
I was trying to think of something intelligence but the only thing that came to mind is that if it weren't for MS and their push for the atx standard we'd all be using mac's or something.
Microsoft is a large company- large companies don't do innovation very well. Large companies do processes and production of scale. They should stick to that.
Their XBox department has been innovative, but yeah, not their entire company.
microsoft is not a consumer company.
So far, they seem developer-focused more than anything else.

Hmm, more like Apple and Microsoft BOTH copied Xerox - except unlike Microsoft, Apple forgot to copy both mouse buttons. On the other hand, Apple remembered to copy the trashcan from Xerox and MS didn't. Really its kind of ridiculous to think that companies are innovative. Companies don't inovate, PEOPLE do. And smart innovative people move around, spread their ideas and others build upon it further. Companies don't innovate - they patent and sue.
I occasionally come with ideas or suggestions for them. I wonder if they would listen to me or how you would get a company that large to listen.
I bought Win7 during the pre-order last summer, and everything is great with it. But then I didn't have too many problems with XP.
I'm going to be with XP at least another year. When I upgrade XP, in another year or so I'm donating this copy to the Smithsonian.
"Microsoft: We Should've Done More, We're Slow"
User ask's Microsoft " you think ? "
Just shredded vista and win7 dvd's as I could get no one that wanted them even with $200 cash and no takers.
