It was only a matter of time before a company came up with a colorful, kid-friendly, LEGO digital camera and other LEGO-themed electronics.

Last week Digital Blue announced a joint venture with LEGO to create a line of electronic gear inspired by the blocky yet colorful building blocks. All products will be value priced, ranging from $19.99 to $59.99 and will hit retail shelves sometime this summer. Although portable and brick-built, neither company specified if the products actually come apart although the concept of piecing together a fully functional digital camera is highly unlikely. Still, that doesn't mean kids won't try to take the products apart and mix-match components and bricks.

“Digital Blue is extremely proud to team up with LEGO Systems, Inc, a highly regarded brand among generations of parents and kids throughout the world,” said Tim Hall, CEO of Digital Blue. “This partnership helps us to achieve our goal of expanding globally in support of a prominent brand worldwide.”

Built in the form of colorful, classic LEGO bricks, all products will be fully functional. The portable line of LEGO electronics will feature working digital cameras, USB drives, walkie talkies and MP3 players. Boom boxes and alarm clock radios compose the home electronics portion, all featuring the classic LEGO brick elements yet scaled to oversized proportions. Digital Blue will also provide Bionicle versions of digital cameras to be sold at Toys "R" Us, with an additional stop animation video camera hitting the toy chain's shelves later this fall.

“We selected Digital Blue – the leader in youth electronics – to help bring the LEGO brand to life in an all-new way for its fans,” said Jill Wilfert, vice president of licensing for LEGO Group. “Our entrance into the youth electronics space will enable our fans to express themselves through photos, videos and music, while displaying their enthusiasm for one of the world’s all-time favorite toys. For the many people who create their own LEGO movies and photo vignettes, these products will be not only attuned to their interests but cater to their hobbies as well.”

The LEGO electronics will appear sometime this summer throughout United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

This is not the first Lego camera at all. As I remember Lego released the Vision Command set for the Robotics Invention System 1.5 and 2.0 back in 1999. The camera was USB 1.1 compatible and acted just like every other TWAIN compliant webcam that you could imagine. The resolution was 620x480, at around 30 frames per second. My Vision Command camera paired with a 1GHz classic Athlon system with 128 MB SDRAM was enough to run a primitive Java face recognition applet that I coded for a sixth grade science fair project.
