HTC Comments on its Plans for Ice Cream Sandwich

- By - Source : Engadget

Will your HTC handset be getting Ice Cream Sandwich?

Phone manufacturer and long-time supporter of Android, HTC, has spoken out about Google's latest iteration of the Android OS, Ice Cream Sandwich. While it's expected that the Nexus One will get ICS, HTC has its own Sense UI overlay on its other Android devices. So what's going to happen with Sense and Android 4.0?

HTC recently had problems upgrading Desire users to Gingerbread, aka Android 2.3, because of Sense UI. The company originally said that it couldn't give Desire owners Gingerbread because, with the Sense UI already on there, there wasn't enough room for the newest version of Android. The company eventually managed to work around the problem by stripping out some apps, however, last night's statement hints towards similar problems with ICS. HTC is promising to make performance and usability a priority but the company also said it's determined to update as many of its recent devices as possible. Check the full statement below:

We are excited about the latest update for Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, and are currently reviewing its features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans. Our goal for Android updates is to give every customer an improved user experience, which means balancing each phone's unique hardware, HTC Sense experience and the Android kernel. While our goal is to upgrade as many of our recent devices as possible, we are committed to maintaining every phone's performance and usability first. Please stay tuned for more updates on specific device upgrade plans.

As Engadget's Brad Molen points out, a lot of Sense's most popular features are now present in ICS, so it will be interesting to see how HTC integrates Sense UI with the new Android build. Do you like Sense? Or would you prefer to see HTC ditch it in favor of ICS? Let us know in the comments below!

.... it would be nice if they released an update for the Sensation - it's only a few months old after all!

I would be even nicer if they made that Sense UI as a downloadable launcher app, and leave the phones with plain vanilla Android. That should be the norm.

Ditch the Sense UI.

As a Sensation User, I have tried various Mods, but keep coming back to Sense UI, Sense 3 is the best overlay I have used. I will try other ICS Roms when avaliable, but will probably come back to HTC Sense ICS when released!

They go by the Alphabet, Next OS codename will start with a J.(Jelly Bean).

Ditch Sense.
ICS can stand on its own..

It has to start with "J".
I'd say Jelly Doughnut , but they used Doughnut already.

amk-aka-phantom :
Well, it better not be another nonsense like with that last update where they've pissed everyone off by saying that the update won't fit and then DID make it fit after a while, but enraged a lot of users!

Um, I think maybe 'enraged' you. Everyone else was generally OK with it. They got the updates out reasonably quickly. Maybe you easily enrage?

sense ui is just needless extras. they should make it optional, have a build with sense and one without and let the user choose which they want and it is known that phones with sense perform worse than phones with plain android.

How would Apple Pie follow?

Android versions:
1.5 - Cupcake
1.6 - Donut
2.0/2.1 - Eclair
2.2 - Froyo
2.3 - Gingerbread
3.x - Honeycomb
4.0 - Ice Cream Sandwich
?? - Jelly Bean

Notice the starting letters for each name (C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, ...).

Drop it (together with all of the bloatware)
Leave only the good stuff (dialer, social integration, widgets, and -maybe- colorful icons)
How hard can it bee?
Is it worth to hinder an ICS port? Or the performance cost?

Jalapeno or Jelly Bean, the only reasonable options from your list.

I hope my Desire upgrade to ICS without Sense. The Sense make the system so lag.

Nice list. I used to eat jawbreakers all the time as kid. I haven't had one of those in years.

HTC should just give you the option to just install stock android if there running into memory problems. i bet you could find better alternatives to there sense UI on the app store

I really didn't like Sense slowing things down so I installed CM7 but I do miss the Sense widgets. Maybe they should just offer the widgets and get rid of Sense.

No, but think of the logo they could use! A red Android (like from the commercials) with smoke trails rising from him. Animated ofcourse ;)

Poeple would say the new Jalapeno version of Android is smokin' hot.

Updates will maybe come in 2013 - that's why I've said goodbye to HTC. Had a Desire, now I'm back with Sony Ericsson and getting both Gingerbread and ICS on my Xperia Mini Pro
