Google Street View is Going Indoors
Check out local establishments without ever leaving your house.
Google Street View comes in pretty handy when you're visiting new cities or planning a trip. You can check out the parking situation near that new restaurant you've been wanting to try, look for landmarks that will help you find your hotel, or plan a route for your weekend cycle. However, with Google's latest update to Street View, you'll also be able to check out the interiors of local businesses.
Venture Beat reports that Google has started its pilot phase of photographing the interiors of businesses that volunteer to have their photo taken. Those wishing to take part in the program have to fill out an application form and notify customers of the day Google will be photographing the business. As usual, Google will be blurring the faces of any people that make it into the shot, but in a new twist, the search giant may opt not to use the photo at all if there are people in it.
The 360 degree photos that Google captures will remain the property of Google and will appear on businesses' Google pages as well as Street View. What do you think, creepy or cool?

creepy... O.O
Creepy. That's a step too far.
This view comes in handy for newly visiting burglars.
Coool!
Google is for everyone, burglars too... what a joke
Google's "don't be evil" strikes again

Same argument used by people who ask google to remove their house from streetview. Silly person.
I think it's cool. The creepy part would be if they didn't require businesses to apply and notify their customers. With this, you can find reviews online and then double check if it's a place you want to visit. I just wish the timestamp of the images was easier to find.
I think the burger comments are getting kind of stupid. These Are Businesses! They are open to the public all the time. This is about as creepy as allowing all sorts of people in and out of a store all day every day without checking everyone's ID at the door. When Google starts doing this to peoples homes or places that don't volunteer, than you can complain about something.
I think its safe to say your average burglar doesn't even know what Google maps is let alone the ability to use street view to scope out there next target.
This would be cool if Google could introduce a click-able sales system. Company's could just upload new 360 degree views when they change products. Virtually walk though would be much better than any sales site as you often over look things you may want. This would reduce the frustration of older buys who have trouble working though the hierarchical links in current web sites.
you can keep the government out of the bedroom, but not google
I think it's cool. The business has to sign up for it, and people's faces are blurred out anyway. Could be a great way for potential customers to check out a shop/restaurant beforehand.

Exactly
Can't wait to see Strip Clubs in Google View!
Nothing creepy since it's not quite creeping in when the owner has given permission. Also it is only for those who are willing to participate. And hey, who needs Google View to break into the shop when it is free for public viewing any day? Nothing to be alert about. Just don't really know what would it be used for exactly...
They got chased out of a couple of towns just for doing this outside on the street. I foresee lynching and burnings at the stake for this.
Seems like this would be insanely time consuming to physically take a picture inside of every business in North America that wishes to be photographed (who wouldn't want free advertising).
OHHHHHH That explains the guy who was in my house recording me sleep... it all makes sense now!
Do public toilets count as business premises? Actually, I suppose they do for some people...
Exactly
Umm you have to sign up for it and it's not like the burglars can't just go to your business and check it out in person anyway.
Coool!
LOL just what i was thinking, also to ubduct children they just type in the phone number... and bam they have house view...

this face is blurred, im sure there not going to set there all day and blur out faces..

facial recognition automatically blurs.
Just look for a KFC and see the colonel is blurred.
Time to case the jewlery stores.
Why Google?
One can only wonder if CrApple will allow their stores to be photographed *giggle*

].
...but it also means that the burglar can case the joint without ending up on surveillance cameras [in the store and perhaps near-by stores, not sure how much of that CSI stuff really happens
Also, if you were never in the store otherwise, then employees aren't likely to recognize you of ypu are picked up as a suspect.
Cool. Useful too.
Maybe I can get a 360 degree view of the kitchen.
With permission, and while requiring that no people are in the picture: Cool, not creepy...
However, with people there (and their faces blurred) creepy. Even faces blurred, long time employees could be identified, and even with consent, it is creepy...
Also, while Google can own those photos (as is standard with photo contracts) should an owner ever want these photos removed, they should DEMAND the right to, on the fly, have the ability to do that...

I like this idea: Google's version of IBM's Maximo Navigator...
