Reports emerged earlier this week that Cupertino-based Apple has hired the dean of the Yale School of Management to lead a new project called "Apple University.’’

Not many Apple announcements come completely out of the blue. Usually there is a couple of planned hints dropped along the way or a big launch planned, which results in weeks or months of speculation. The rumors range from the ridiculous to the likely but there is always some idea of what’s to come. This Apple University announcement has taken the masses by surprise.

While there is little to no information about the Apple University other than it’s an, “exciting new project,” Apple’s decision to pluck Joel Podolny from tenure at Yale SOM (and indeed his decision to leave this current position) means the “project” must be a little bit more than just a project.

Apple is remaining quiet on the matter and has, so far, refused to comment on the news. It seems those at Yale are just as baffled. While students and teachers aired their confusion as to why the dean would step down, they listed the only indication that he may be setting sail for Apple as his changing from a BlackBerry to an iPhone in recent weeks but also noted that he had put his house up for sale nearly two weeks ago.

Upon hearing the words “Apple University” we draw a blank. We’re not sure if we should think it’s just a training ground for all the new Apples the company hires. It seems likely but why poach the dean of Yale School of Management to act as dean and vice president if all AU does is train or educate new employees (similar to the Pixar University). We’re also interested to hear your thoughts on what this Apple University Business could be about. This is, rumorwise, a blank canvas for Apple fans to run amok. So, go nuts. Leave your ideas in the comments below.

So first apple sues the college that has an apple as a logo.... now they want to open there own school and use an apple as the logo most likely.. Hmm seems like the big hint was dropped a while back.. I don't think apple would sue someone unless it was in their best interest and having another school with an apple logo would "confuse" people as to which school really has the bad apple.. Just another dirty bomb apple is dropping.. Just another hundred thousand idiots that will accept it.. Seems like you can't stop a monopolistic company these days.. I say boycott apple..

It just figures Yale would do this, i though they were supposed to be "higher" education? if so, why then are they using a platform that still holds less than 25% of the computer market?

First chance i see a MS university im goin' to it. lol

Sigh... What is Apple doing for themselves now...
Probably a school to teach ad-tricked people to use their already completely easy OS's and Ipods

since he is was a dean of the bussiness school, i dont think it will even be a physical school. I expect them to make this project into a product that they will sell to schools. that way numerous national schools will have a "Apple University" to indoctrinate the students into apple's fold.

Did Apple ever follow through with the suit on that business school? All we know of from the last blurb was that they sent a letter about the logo.

bfstev is more then likely correct. As when I went to school Apple dominated the computer labs. This is more then likely a move to a dominate position in education.

Jamsesl: please gain some common decency maybe you shouldn't have gone to school.

If you act like a jerk expect to be treated likewise.

And bfstev: Mostly likely true, i know apple is trying to get my states schools to go all apple and turn the deans against their own IT dep.

re. "... less than 25% of the computer market ..."
not here in UK, hard to find a fellow Mac user. Sadly the MacOS phenomenon is rather US-centric. And over here perhaps more about style than substance.
Fingers crossed that the "university" is more about technical and user reality than more hype, glitz and marketing.
