Netflix subscribers and survival documentaries go together like peanut butter and jelly, evident by the fact that its latest harrowing tale, "Shipwrecked: Stranded at Sea," is staying strong in the No. 1 spot this weekend. Granted, Netflix hasn't had a ton of strong hits this summer, with the biggest of the bunch, "Enola Holmes 3," barely treading water in the No. 7 slot less than two weeks after its release.

The best disaster documentaries resist sensationalism, choosing instead to treat real-life tragedies with the empathy and thoughtful reporting they deserve. That care and respect for those affected really comes through onscreen in these three survival documentaries you should watch next on Netflix.

Similar to how "Shipwrecked" dives into the staggering negligence of Captain Francesco Schettino, this documentary covers the implosion of the experimental Titan submersible that killed five people trying to visit the wreck of the Titanic.

This documentary blends technical breakdowns of what went wrong with expert testimonials on the horrifying reality of what being trapped miles beneath the ocean's surface would feel like in those final moments.

I did a deep dive on the Whakaari volcano eruption years ago after stumbling on one of the survivor's Tiktok channel. This Netflix documentary does a good job of covering this absolute nightmare scenario.

"The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari" covers the 2019 volcanic eruption on a popular New Zealand tourist island that left 47 tourists and guides trapped in a hellscape of ash and toxic gas. Like "Shipwrecked," it pieces together the tragedy through raw, real-time footage taken by the victims along with emotional firsthand survivor accounts.

Watch On

"Grenfell: Uncovered" is the kind of documentary that makes you stand up and take action after the credits roll. Like "Stranded," it tackles the staggering corruption and incompetence lying beneath the surface of our daily lives.

Grenfell Tower, a 24-story block of flats in West London, burned down on June 14, 2017, killing 72 people and leaving dozens with injuries. A small electrical fire escalated into an inferno thanks to flammable building materials used during construction. This documentary explores the timeline of events leading up to the fire, including interviews with survivors and first responders, as well as how the tragedy could have been prevented.
