NordVPN has rolled out its Call Protection feature for Android users in Europe. The feature is designed to warn you about potential fraud before answering the phone, and provides an extra layer of protection against increasingly common phone-based scams.
Call Protection works by analysing call patterns and metadata to detect suspicious activity linked to scam operations. When a potentially fraudulent call is detected, users receive an alert before picking up, helping them decide whether the call is worth answering.
Importantly, NordVPN says the feature is built with privacy in mind, and runs quietly in the background.
The feature was already available in the US, UK, Canada, Japan, and Australia, but has now been rolled out across Europe in a major expansion.

How NordVPN's Call Protection Works
NordVPN's Call Protection feature acts as an early warning system for suspicious calls, working in real-time. Instead of analysing the content of calls, the tool looks at call patterns and metadata associated with incoming numbers to flag activity that may be linked to known scam operations.
This privacy-first approach means NordVPN never listens to or records conversations. It relies on pattern analysis to identify suspicious calls. NordVPN says the system focuses only on technical signals that suggest a call could be fraudulent, such as those commonly used in large-scale scam campaigns.
Once enabled, Call Protection runs quietly in the background and can continue providing alerts even when the VPN itself is not actively connected. This ensures you still receive warnings about potentially suspicious calls throughout the day.
Why NordVPN is tackling phone scams
Phone scams remain one of the most common forms of digital fraud, with criminals increasingly using spoofed numbers and automated calls to target victims. By adding call alerts to its security tools, NordVPN is aiming to extend protection beyond browsing and into everyday phone use.
This follows a growing trend we are seeing of VPNs expanding their offering from only VPN apps to a wide range of cybersecurity protections.
Domininkas Virbickas, Product Director at NordVPN, said the feature reflects how the threat landscape has evolved.
"We've always been about protecting people's digital lives, and phone scams are a huge part of that threat landscape now," Virbickas said. "The Call Protection feature extends that protection beyond browsing."
How to enable Call Protection on Android
Android users in supported regions can enable Call Protection directly within the NordVPN app. To turn it on, open the app, head to the Threat Protection tab, and toggle the Call Protection feature on.
Once enabled, the app will ask for a few Android permissions needed to detect incoming calls. After setup, the feature runs in the background and will display a warning if a call appears to be linked to a known scam pattern.
Call Protection is available with NordVPN Complete and above plans. NordVPN Complete is offered in most countries NordVPN does business in. In the US, NordVPN Complete plans work out at $5.39 per month ($129.36 upfront pre-tax) and include a $40 Amazon voucher for a limited time.

UK subscribers will receive a free £50 Amazon voucher, while EU subscribers claim an extra three months of free VPN protection.
