Proton VPN has released a significant update to its iOS app, expanding Siri Shortcuts and Quick Actions support for iPhone users.
The update is out now, and builds on Proton VPN's existing Shortcuts integration. Users can check VPN status without launching the app, connect or disconnect via Siri, create location-based automations, and long-press the app icon for quick access to frequent actions.
Proton VPN's iOS app does lag behind those of the other VPNs on our best VPN list – especially when it comes to simplicity and ease of use. But Proton VPN is clearly trying to address this and we hope more iOS updates are coming soon.
Proton VPN | $2.99 per month | 2 Years
Proton VPN has overhauled its iOS app in recent months. It's now far nicer to use than it once was and boasts more features.
What you'll get...
✨ Newly designed UI inc. Shortcuts & Quick Actions
📱 Protection for up to 10 devices
🔒 Class-leading privacy & security
🌍 19,700+ servers in 145 countries
A two-year Proton VPN plan costs $2.99 per month ($71.76 upfront) and comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
What the Siri Shortcuts and Quick Actions update adds
The headline addition is status visibility – you can now check whether your VPN is active without opening the app, removing a persistent pet peeve for privacy-conscious users.
Quick Actions are available by long-pressing the Proton VPN icon on your home screen, giving instant access to connect, disconnect, or jump to a pinned server.
The Shortcuts integration goes deeper, letting you build automations that trigger based on your network – the most useful being an auto-connect rule that fires the moment you leave your home Wi-Fi.
Why is Proton VPN doing this?
In a Reddit post, Proton VPN said: "You shouldn't have to manually open the app every time you want to connect, and now you don't have to. This update is all about providing you the tools to control your VPN."
In a tweet, it again focused on simplicity and ease of use. It said "your VPN should fit into your workflow, not interrupt it."

Proton VPN has been on a sustained iOS improvement drive. In February 2026, it added city search and load-based server sorting to bring the iPhone VPN app in line with its Windows and Android counterparts.
This update continues that push, this time targeting how users interact with the app at the OS level.
It's also a competitive response. ExpressVPN added Siri, Shortcuts, and home screen widgets to its iOS app in September 2025, and NordVPN has offered basic Siri shortcut support for some time.
Proton VPN had basic Shortcuts and widget support already, but this update expands it.
How do I get the update?
The update is available now. Open the App Store, go to Updates, and install the latest Proton VPN release.
To set up a Quick Action, long-press the app icon and select your preferred action.
To create a location-based automation:
- Open Shortcuts and go to the Automations tab
- Tap + and select New Automation
- Choose Wi-Fi as your trigger, select your home network, and set it to "Is Disconnected"
- Select Proton VPN as the action, choose Connect, and set it to Run immediately
Proton VPN noted that some automations may require your iPhone to be unlocked to run.
