Proton VPN, one of the best VPN services based on our testing, will roll out interface updates across its iOS, Mac, and Linux apps, beginning with changes to server navigation on iPhone.
The announcement came from Proton VPN's general manager, David Peterson, who outlined the plans in a post on X. The goal, he said, is to bring those apps in line with Proton VPN's Windows and Android versions.
What will these updates look like?
In his post, Peterson said work is already underway:
We're steadily working to bring the UX of our @ProtonVPN iOS, Mac, and Linux apps up to the same level as we have for Windows and Android.Latest quality-of-life tweak for iOS: you can now find servers by city/state, and sorted by load. pic.twitter.com/cqv3BZwVuBFebruary 24, 2026
Windows and Android already include more advanced filtering and sorting tools within the server list. iOS, by contrast, required more manual navigation in certain scenarios. The update introduces those same filtering tools to iOS.
Until now, selecting a country on iOS has been straightforward. The issue appeared in large countries such as the US, UK, Australia, and Canada, where users often wanted a specific city. Reaching that location meant scrolling through long lists of cities within the country panel.
The new search function allows users to type in a city or state directly instead of manually scanning the list. The update builds on a broader interface redesign Proton rolled out in 2025, when it revamped its iOS, Android, and Windows apps to simplify navigation and introduce features such as widgets and custom Profiles.
The second addition is load-based sorting. Server load shows how busy a server is at a given time. Previously, iOS users relied on automatic "Fastest" selection or manually switched between servers to compare performance.
With sorting enabled, servers can now be reordered by load, making lower-traffic locations easier to identify without trial and error. Load percentage is displayed directly within the server list.
The update is already available in the latest version of the iPhone app.
Peterson said similar UX alignment work is underway for Mac and Linux as well. Proton has not said when those updates will reach stable releases on Mac or Linux.
