Now you can have the Elite for $100 less
It's officially official, folks. The Xbox 360 Elite has dropped $100 off its sticker is now $299.
The price drop was rumored for months, which will take effect starting August 28, 2009. Priced at $299, the Xbox 360 Elite, with its 120 GB hard drive and black casing, is now pitted head to head with the new PS3 Slim, which also features a hard drive of the same capacity.
The new price at $299 also puts it at the price point held previously by the Xbox 360 Pro SKU. Existing Xbox 360 Pro stock still at retail will now be reduced by $50 to $249.
"With the holiday season right around the corner, it's already time to start looking for entertainment and gifts that everyone will enjoy," said Shane Kim, corporate vice president of strategy and business development for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. "If you're looking for deep experiences that don't require deep pockets, now is the time to purchase an Xbox 360. We've got the best games, a vast library of TV shows and movies, new music experiences, more ways to connect friends and family, and so much more on the horizon including 'Project Natal' — no controller required."
Now that the Xbox 360 Elite is $299, are you ready to take the plunge?

the red ring will look so good on a black case, & for 299 why not.
hmm... 360 Elite (120G HD) = PS3 slim (120GHD + Blu-ray + wifi)= $299
hmm... hardware wise.... 360 Elite seems way overpriced....
yes we can take the software into account.. but that becomes very subjective... then it is all about the personal preference or the purpose of having the console.
Anyway... from the hardware point of view... 360 Elite seems way overpriced even after the discount.
Price drops are good for everyone! I don't care if you are a ps3 guy or 360 guy, everyone loves cheaper stuff.
OK but with a 50+% failure rate, no thank you MS, you can keep your crapbox 360 and I will keep my PC and use your XP OS instead.
man.. i wish the 'integrated wifi' people would give it up... i've gone through way too many returns on laptops because of shitty integrated wireless that i would prefer using my own add-on devices for such things. not to mention that wireless N is around the corner (hopefully) and that precious integrated adapter in your PS3 will be obsolete... and if you didn't know... linksys makes the best add-on wireless controller for all consoles that have an ethernet port for $70USD that has a user replaceable anntenna so you can get a decent signal in the worst of situations (apartments, anybody?). and then there's the rest of that prefer the wire for it's stability and increased throughput... so take your lame argument elsewhere... it's pathetic...
The Xbox has had a higher failure rate than other consoles, but the idiots that keep claiming the 50% failure rate just demonstrate how soft brained they are. That poll was not in any way a valid survey.
Why would I want outdated hardware when dx11 is coming out in a few weeks with the games right behind it. Consoles can't even come close to 1920 x 1200 all max settings add dx11 and consoles even priced at $99 would lookl like atari day graphics.
I had a xbox for two years and didn't have one problem with it, sold it and the day the person got it, it red ringed. Nevertheless it's their problem now but still, Every one of my friends that has owned a 360 no longer has the original one they bought, they have all been replaced because of the red ring. I believe the 50% even if it wasn't a valid survey. Open your eyes fan boys, embrace the benefits of all consoles and if you don't have enough money to own all, don't bash on something you haven't had time to sit down and play constantly.
I have also had a 360 freeze on me so many times, but PS3, maybe a couple times but it fixed itself instead of just crashing.
360 is also 3 times louder than the PS3. PS3 is almost whisper quiet.
Blu-Ray is also one BIG feature that the PS3 wins hands down. Microsoft has nothing going for it in that sense.
Online wise, it's pretty much preference, if you like trash-talking twelve year olds screaming on the mic, Xbox Live wins but you have to pay for that. PS3 is free, it may not be as fluid as Xbox Live, but so what? You have to learn a few things, oh noes.
Oh and the wifi thing, Xbox 360 Elite($299)+$70 or if you get Microsofts brand, $99, that pushes the cost to $370 or $399, back to ground one again. Besides, the Wifi integrated into the PS3 isn't bad at all. I can get full signal no matter where I play in my house.
All in all, Make the Elite $250, and I might buy one again, but $299 it can't compete with PS3 at the same price it is now.
If you want a poorly conducted survey to quote, my Xbox 360 Elite has a failure rate of 0%. There, go blog about that.
I think I'll stick with my PS3...
Wireless N will make the PS3 obsolete...LOL
Why would you even need faster than 54mpbs for the PS3 anyway? It's plenty for streaming video and way faster than your internet connection, so what's the point?
Wireless N has been around the corner for years. But it doesn't make your old Wireless G useless...in the case of the PS3, it can rarely (if ever) take advantage of the higher speed. The hdd is too slow to max out N...

When you hear about console and you compaire it with your PCs you just sound dumb, seriously. When you talk about the 54% failure rate that was done with a pole from a gamingsite thats full of kiddos that love their console more than their own anus cause i bet they WOULD bend over in order to keep their PS3s or whatever in their arms, again you sound stupid...
Now as on the subject if you wanna pay a PS3 for worst tittles cause ur lazy to RISK as you think within 3 years waranty to send it in for free service then go ahead and play worst version of multiplatform games. As for exclusives i wont mention. I dont need no fanboys gathering around this site as well by much. Its a matter of choice on what you pay for. Just stop mentioning invalid and dumb things when you try to make your points ppl.. ffs
The newer Elite versions has a failure rate more in tuned with the rest.
The difference is that the XBOX Live catalog is much better. It's got Netflix and can watch videos from hulu.com. And games, for the most part, still look better on the 360 than on the PS3.
Since hulu.com has banned or has been banned due to Sony asking hulu for ad revenue, I hardly turned on that paper weight except to watch my HUGE collection of blu-ray movies... Spiderman 3, Night at the Museum, Dark Knight, Face/Off... and that's it! HUGE Blu-ray collection! Not to mention I can power a village in India with the power required to watch a movie on the PS3.
P.S. Wifi on the PS3 is only G. For those who like to do not like mixed modes, the wifi is USELESS!

PS3 Owner for 3 years. If only three years ago X360 didn't have these problems...
No real reason for buying a 360 for me, crappy hardware and awful design inside and I can play most of it's games with better graphics on my PC. I better save $300 for Windows 7!!

........You need to learn english. Wow. I don't think I saw more than one or two legible AND coherent sentences..
@ davisorle
I feel the urge to respond to your post, but the horrible spelling and grammar and the flaming prevent me from being able to understand it
Can get the Pro at Target right now for $249.99 with two controllers. As of right now if I'm going to spend $300 it will be on a PS3 but for $250 and two controllers that is a pretty good deal. Those controllers are so ridiculously overpriced.
Of course for a lot of people blu-ray is a wash because the discs are so stupidly expensive. I own exactly one blu-ray movie, Hoosiers, that I picked up from Fry's for $10.99. The wi-fi is nice but for blu-ray to mean anything for me the average price of the discs needs to be cut by 65%.
Great, now it would totally be great if my two Xbox 360's weren't broken. RRoD kills.
learn how to comprehend, troll. i mentioned that it would make the wireless adapter in the PS3 obsolete. for people that have multiple devices in their homes, this is a big deal. especially when streaming multiple data streams over wireless. and if you live in an or around an apartment complex with their own poorly setup WLANs... then you have big problems... obviously you don't do much of that or you would know that even have 2 devices with moderate streams makes 54Mbps insufficient. try 10 or more all consuming 3-4Mbps and then let me know how your video streams look... and time sensitive stuff like games are right out the window because of the increased contention...
has no one else done real world wireless setups in more than just 1 location with more than 1 device at a time?
And what about the xbox 360 arcade? Not that I care about the arcade version, I was just wondering about the price.
I'm waiting on DX11 and i5.
I'm sure my $100 4830 can run rounds around the 360/PS3. Those with CrossFire/SLI could run 20-30x around the PS3/360.
I'm actually waiting for my 360 to red ring again (it's a pre-falcon unit), then I'd think about which is much more worth it to buy.

The Pro model I got last year only came with one controller but also included a wireless adapter. The controller didnt matter since I had already bought a wired 360 controller to use on the PC.
@299 the PS3 is the better buy, regardless of which console you are a fanboy of.

As a PS3 owner... i think we can all agree the 360 has a better selection of games

If you're only gonna look at hardware then a PC will always win.
360 Arcade / Core = same price of $200... its already sold at a loss.

Dman3k : "P.S. Wifi on the PS3 is only G. For those who like to do not like mixed modes, the wifi is USELESS!"
Only an idiot would think that using a G device with an N network is useless. N Routers can talk to G, B and A. So its a NON-ISSUE. Thats kind of like some moron refusing to buy a PCIe 2.0 video card (4850) because his motherboard only has PCIe 1.x.
And as stated, an add-on wireless adapter is still possible for the
PS3.
I've stated before that the price of a PS3 at $400 was a fair price compared to the 360 Elite. A slightly smaller HD, but hey - BluRay, Wireless built-in. At $300... the new PS3 gives even more value over the 360.
1 - No RRODs....
2 - Almost silent operation, vs JET ENGINES.
3 - Cooling issues.
4 - Smaller size
5 - The power brick on an Xbox360 is almost as big as the new PS3.
6 - The PS3 doesn't HAVE a power brick, its PSU is on the inside.
7 - BluRay included.
8 - BluRay movies are about $3~8 more than DVD versions.
9 - More hardware for less price
10- No monthly charges to hear cursing 12 yr olds or 40yr olds
11- Want more than 120GB? Easy and cheap on the PS3. The 360 has to be MODDED... currently no upgrades above 120 (360 BIO doesn't support bigger HD).
Only an idiot would think that using a G device with an N network is useless.
Everyone knows N routers has backward compatibility, just as every knows that mixed modes decreases network performance. What an idiot.
There is no question hardware-wise, Sony's system got Microsoft beat. Software-wise Microsoft is way better than Sony and that's an understatement. Microsoft has a better online service, game collection, and graphics on the oh-so-lowly system looks better on the X360 than PS3. All the PS3 could do is try to match graphical performance. There has not been a single case where a game look better on the PS3 than on the X360.
And let's talk RROD, Microsoft actually would fix or replace hardware for free. Sony doesn't.
Blu-Ray movies cost $3-8? I know a dvd at best buy in the $5.99 bin and still cost $22.99 in blu-ray. Let me correct you on the math...
Silent operation... rofl, long loading screens vs short loading screens...
monthly charge? I thought it's yearly... but hey, we can split it up and call it monthly if you want!
I've never owned a XBox360, and I even I know the facts from the myths. But then, you had me at how it's a non-issue for mixed-mode haters. What an idiot!
P.S. I'm fine running mixed-modes cause I'm too cheap to spent $20 on wireless 2.4 ghz n usb sticks for all 9 computers in the house.
Belardo...
If i could have givin you more then 1 thumbs up i would have.
dman3k: at least there's one other person with real world wireless experience in the audience... +1 to you!
@dman3k
) in Blu-Ray. It was $28.99 vs $24.99 for the DVD version, and the Blu-Ray copy came with a coupon to download a digital copy of the movie (the DVD didn't include that).
Me and my roomies have 5 computers on a WLAN, as well as two PS3's, a 360, and a Wii. All of them are hooked into the network, and were in an apartment. The Wifi built into the Wii and PS3's is extremely helpful and cuts down on the cable mess we have. It also runs fine, despite being on a 2.4 GHz N network. The only time I have experienced a slow down was when a torrent was being downloaded on one of the computers, a video was being streamed to the PS3, and my buddy was playing Halo on his 360. All five of us have gamed online at the same time, 2 on PS3's, 1 on 360, and 2 on computer, without any slowdown.
Also your information is horribly off. The PS3 beats the 360 by about 10 seconds in Bioshock loading screens, and by about 5 in COD. The 360 sounds like a leaf blower unless a game is installed to the HDD, simply due to the crappy optical drive that microsoft put in. The PS3 is actually whisper quiet and it makes gaming a lot nicer when your gaming at a desk (I've owned both systems, and sold the 360 to get a PS3).
Xbox Live is a monthly subscription. $8 for 1 month of Live (here in Canada), and $60 for a 12 month subscription.
As for Blu-Ray prices. I was in HMV a few days ago and purchased The Dark Knight (great movie
Please don't pretend you know everything about everything, especially if your going to admit that you've never owned a 360.
The 360 sounds like a leaf blower unless a game is installed to the HDD
At my former job (game publisher) we had 360's and PS3s around the building in game displays showing off our new releases and for employees to play. The PS3s were the ones that sounded like leaf blowers. We had to shut them all off because people were complaining they couldn't do their work with all that noise.
