6. Using The Dell XPS M1710: The Display

The table and chart below summarize data regarding the Dell XPS M1710 display's brightness. At 152 cd/m^2 the display shows good brightness. However, with a brightness range of over 100 cd/m^2 (92 cd/m^2 if the few values below 120 cd/m^2 are ignored), display brightness is quite uneven. The spatial uniformity of brightness chart confirms this unevenness, showing high brightness in the bottom one-fourth of the display and significantly lower brightness in the upper three-fourths of the display. The lowest brightness is on the upper left and right sides of the display. The difference in brightness is visible on the display itself, especially when lighter colors are displayed.

The M1710 display's mean contrast is very good at 287 cd/m^2. (See the table and chart below.) However, as with brightness, the M1710's contrast range is quite wide at over 200 cd/m^2. Even if less frequently appearing minimum contrast values under 220 cd/m^2 and maximum contrast values over 380 cd/m^2 are ignored, the contrast range is still a fairly high 160 cd/m^2. The chart shows contrast differences that pretty much parallel those of the brightness chart. However the plot isn't as smooth. Notice, for example, the contrast peak about one-fourth down from the top of the display. As with brightness, differences in contrast are visible when lighter colors are displayed.
