An Arizona State University law student fights off attacker for homework-filled laptop
A home invasion robber landed himself in the hospital after demanding a bit too much from a first-year law student – namely his laptop. A little more than a week ago, Gabriel Saucedo broke into Alex Botsios’ apartment and demanded cash along with other property. Botsios, a law student at Arizona State University, initially complied with the robber by giving him his wallet and even guitars, but things got ugly when Saucedo went for the laptop.
Saucedo had snuck into the apartment through an open window, early in the morning and even though he was armed with a baseball bat, the student began fighting tooth and nail for his laptop and with good reason. He told the local television station that he had all of his case notes and four months of homework stored on the computer. He added, “Don’t mess with my computer.”
Botsios won the brawl by disarming Saucedo and punching him in the face. Police arrived, took Saucedo to the hospital to get stitched up and then charged him with armed robbery and kidnapping. Botsios survived the ordeal with just a few scratches and a bruised knuckle.
Does anyone want to bet that Botsios had more than just his homework on the laptop?

I can't help but like stories like this. I hate robbers like the next person and I love seeing the robbed get vindicated.
As a law student, I can tell you that the laptop is the lifeblood of the law student. Every note from every class, every outline, everything is on that laptop. I would do the same thing this guy did. Without the laptop, you are screwed.

Obviously, the writer of this article has never met a law student. If someone stole a law student's laptop, they'd be screwed. EVERYTHING we do is on these things. It's not just about backing it up - it's about taking notes in class the next day, having access to research, memos, briefs, old papers to use as writing samples on interviews. A law student without a laptop is like a marathon runner without legs!
It is not a joke. It is an unnecessary, inappropriate, snide remark - at the victom's expense. Correct, it is small, but is it somehow OK because it is small? Like the 'slightly funny broken neck, or murder?' Call it like it is. How would the Author know not to be inappropriate next time?
If a laptop is that vital for a law student, I would highly recommend using an encrypted online backup service PLUS maintain a local backup drive in a fireproof safe on the premise PLUS have enough cash in the bank to go and buy a laptop at a moments notice.
As to those applauding the student's actions - how many times might such acts been attempted but instead the story is about a student murdered and police are baffled by the motive.
Seriously, which is more critical to your life - you academic career or your life?!?

at most you would lose what one day's worth of notes if the computer gets jacked or your hard drive goes
and if you are out of a machine for a week or so there is something called using a pen and paper to take notes!
I am a law student, and someone stole my laptop from my front entrance in my apartment building, and I went after them in the street and cried until they gave it back...no one likes an upset whiny girl.
Damn! I know I am late to this article - but pu-lease! A laptop is and I quote - "A law student without a laptop is like a marathon runner without legs!"? So ummm how did all the law students in the early 90's and before function? I have to agree with the option of old school - pen and paper or even less old school of a mini-recorder (one of those voice ones) to go with the pen and paper.
Marathon runners were using their legs back then and still are. As far as I know they have always used their legs for purposes of that statement. (though not all of them do - isn't their marathons for people in wheel chairs and with other handicaps?) A law student with a laptop is an evolvement of the last decade or so give or take a few years. If a student can not function without a laptop I would think they have other issues and need to learn some basics and how to deal with life in general because its not always roses or revolving around a laptop.
For that matter what happens to all the students whose laptops hard drives fry and they have no backup? Are they instantly screwed and dropped out of law school? Or does that make them fail their courses and we only have lawyers who were lucky enough to have good hardware?
Geez I am starting to think law students lack common sense which could answer why there is soo many bad jokes about lawyers and most people can not stand them unless they need one.
thegh0st: most law schools require students have laptops. professors can get through more information because it takes less time to type than it does to hand write. yes, people hand wrote in the past, but not anymore, and classes are now run in a manner that relies on laptop use. is a student screwed if they don't back up and their computer crashes? yes, they are; and then they have to collect outlines from friends. i don't understand why this means they don't have common sense. it only means that technology fails sometimes. you stating that only those lucky enough to have good hardware is ridiculous. law students are not the only people in the world that rely on computers; it does not make sense why you are singling them out like they are complete fools for relying on technology.

about your joke references gh0st, there are jokes about every profession out there. to be honest, a lot of people who tell lawyer jokes and jokes about doctors, dentists, etc are very ignorant. they are the same type of people that blame everyone else for their problems, always think they are the good guy, that they are the victim and anyone who disagrees with them is evil. law students and lawyers work extremely hard and the fact that you aren't capable of understanding the work they do has given you some extremely erred false sense of self-righteousness.
also try to recognize that the analogy someone gave about the marathon runner's legs doesn't mean that a law student's use of a computer is in every single way completely and 100% identical and mirrored to a marathon runner's legs. whoever made that statement was trying to put into terms the importance of a laptop to a law student in a way that hopefully people would understand, but clearly all the naysayers prefer to shine a negative light on the student from the article.
