Image Storage And Viewing
7. Image Storage And Viewing
As is the rule with pro cameras, images are recorded to CompactFlash (CF) memory cards, either Type I or Type II. The D200 supports cards formatted in FAT32, which is necessary for those with capacities above 2 GB.
Recording is done either in JPEG format with a choice of three levels of compression, or in NEF (RAW) format, either with or without compression. There's also RAW+JPEG mode, with a choice of compression rates for the JPEG images. In JPEG, there's a choice of three image sizes as well as a compression rate optimized for either quality or image size. All of these options mean that everyone should be able to find what suits them best!
File size exceeds 15 MB in uncompressed RAW, and is around 9 MB in compressed mode. JPEG files at maximum quality take up around 5 MB. As you would expect, you can also choose your color space: the D200 offers sRGB (with two color brightness options) and Adobe 98.
Images can be viewed on the fine 2.5" high-definition rear LCD, which has the usual functions and adds an RGB histogram and the possibility of highlighting overexposed areas separately for each RGB channel. This is a useful function if you shoot with special lighting - performance photography, for example - where one color can be totally saturated without the image as a whole being overexposed.
You can connect the D200 to a GPS unit for recording location and time data (UTC) in the files' EXIF information.

The triple histogram view will interest expert users.

Overexposure can be analyzed separately for each RGB channel.
