Apple 4.1 iDevices Fall to Greenp0ison, Limera1n

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

The original unlocker of the iPhone comes through with the latest jailbreak.

As with every new release of Apple iDevices come the desire to jailbreak them to open up the door to lead to outside of Apple's walled garden.

The latest obstacle for the hackers is iOS 4.1, which scrubs of all the vulnerabilities of previous version. The Dev-Team that normally offers jailbreaking solutions revealed a hardware flaw in the latest generation of iPhone 4, iPod touch 4th gen, iPad and even the Apple TV.

In order to patch this hole, Apple would need to retool the hardware that goes on the production line. Apple will surely do this at some point, but that means that, for now, the security gates have been broken down.

The Dev-Team said that it would release its greenp0ison exploit on October 10, making it a special 10:10:10 release, but George Hotz, AKA Geohot, had other plans.

Geohot announced that he had his own hack, which he called limera1n, that would work on more devices that also attacks a hardware weakness.

Rather than both hacks being released at the same time, thus giving Apple two free holes to patch for the price of one, Dev-Team decided to hold back its hack to keep it secret, in hopes that it's one that will still be effective after Apple patches for limera1n.

So, if you have an iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 3G, iPad, iPhone 4, iPod touch 4G running iOS 4.0 or higher, check out limera1n.com to get your jailbreak on. NOTE: do NOT use this jailbreak method if you're interested in preserving your carrier unlock.

UPDATE: The competing jailbreak solution from Chronic Dev has been released and it's called greenp0ison. Like limera1n, it's Windows-only for now.

This release of greenpois0n supports:
- iPhone 4
- iPhone 3G S
- iPod touch (4th Generation)
- iPod touch (3rd Generation)
- iPad

Soon there will be another release, adding things like support for:
- Apple TV (2nd Generation)
- iPod touch (2nd Generation)

Jailbreak is useless to tmobile users without carrier unlock, Cool for ipods and such tho :).Just don't promise anything to the $ony crowd again lol.

Nice of them to save them to save the other jailbreak, great collaboration. I love the open source community.

It wasn't collaboration. Geohot released limera1n to get Chronic Dev to "do the right thing" and save the SHAtter exploit for 5th generation devices/OS.

Do you just type your headline into Google and find the first unrelated picture? Not complaining, just wondering how you find these.

You gotta wonder why Apple doesn't have people working for them trying to discover these exploits pre-release, but I guess as an Apple employee, you are contractually obligated to believe that all Apple products are foolproof genius. Same reason the iPhone 4 antenna issue escaped detection I'm sure.

@hellwig

actually they have a full time intern who's only job is to scan through headlines and see which one he can attached picture of scantily clad babes to..... i believe his called the marketing and advertising director..... they tend to heavily sedate him before every expo to prevent over stimulation.....
