Man Builds $4,000 Iron Man ''War Machine'' Suit

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

No, it doesn't fly ... or play Crysis.

When it comes to Iron Man and Iron Man 2, there's a little bit of suit envy in us all. How cool would it be to have one of those suits? Most of us wouldn't know where to begin if we were to make our own, however, one Iron Man fan set on making his dreams come true decided to do it. He may not be able to fly or bring about world peace by single-handedly fighting off the bad guys of the world, but he does have one heck of a Halloween costume.

Popular Science spoke to 25-year-old Anthony Le, a dedicated Iron Man fan who recently built a replica of the Iron Man suit for himself. While the first version is described as 'more of a costume,' the suit he built in time for the release of Iron Man 2 is a lot more complex. Boasting a dent-proof exterior, a motorized faceplate and a spinning mock Gatling gun, Le decided to focus on the more hardcore looking War Machine with this build. There's little information on the material he used to build the suit, and judging from the comments on the Pop Sci article (which link to comments from Myth Buster's Adam Savage on the Replica Prop Forums), he's very protective of his "secret."

However, from the Pop Sci piece, we do know it supposedly cost $4,000 to make and the armor composed of thin, high-impact urethane, cut onto plates and joined with roughly 1,500 rivets and washers. The gun is built out of PVC piping and a motor and the helmet was made from a sculpted clay mold and liquid resin. There's also a faceplate that incorporates a small motor so it opens and closes just like the movie. Batteries inside the costume power the gun, faceplate and an assortment of LEDs.

Read the full post here. Video of Le winning a costume contest with the suit below.

It's better than paying a few billion for the real thing.

Really!? A few billion would be a bargain for the ludicrous power the fictional suit has.
Abramovich, I'm looking at you. =]

Hmmm That is pretty cool but its nice to see what we americans are still waisting money away in these bad economical times and all the starving people in the world.I would have put the money to charity If I could blow it on a suit. Not saying its not a really impressive custom made suit, but still. Not wise in my opinion.

I am far, far more charitable than most westerners, but talking about these kind of issues in response to a guy building an iron man suit? Rediculous.
These arguments are better suited to governments who actually waste money.
Hell, I bet somebody reading this comment has spent $4000 on a killer PC.

Well that's what YOU would do, douchebag. People like you probably want to force talented people like this dude to pay for everyone else around the globe who aren't as "fortunate." (gag me). We're getting sick of you mindless, drooling bed wetters!

This guy can not fly, but sure he can jump from a skyscraper, land and not get squished- like the real Ironman.
And this suit is still cooler.

Why attack this guy for doing something awesome with a measly 4 grand? Go waste time attacking corporate tax havens or people who can blow 4 grand in one night in Vegas if you really want to make some kind of difference; otherwise, please just find a different hobby than attacking creativity.

I hope you bitched about James Cameron wasting so much money on making Avatar. Maybe you'll reply that he made more than that back and donated a bunch. Well shit maybe the costume will help this kid make back more than $4000 and he can then donate some of that to somebody. You have to make money to be able to give it away, and I'd much rather it was voluntary

I love how Adam Savage hands Anthony Le his butt on a silver platter for being secretive and attacking other convention-goers. First time I've ever heard of him being anything but jovial, considering his attitude while on Myth Busters.

He had to much time on his hands, but that is awesome that he build that with only 4,000 dollars.

Now only if the guns functioned (only to be used in a test range, of course).

I decided to google their little clash, and thank you for bringing it up. Always entertaining. :)

He may as well start making some high density ceramics and mix it with thin titanium plates, mixed with lightweight firearms.
Dangerous? Yes.
Do I want to see it in action anyways? Yes.
