More Evidence of Verizon iPhone Coming January
It seems like rumors of a CDMA iPhone have being doing the rounds since the first iPhone came out in 2007 and this week, we're presented with yet more "evidence" that a Verizon-bound iPhone is on the way.
A recent report by TechCrunch cites a source familiar with the situation that says Apple has submitted a run for millions of units of Qualcomm CDMA chipsets for a Verizon iPhone run due in December. Addressing the fact that we probably hear Verizon-iPhone rumors once a month, TechCrunch's Steve Cheney says he believes these reports of a January iPhone launch for Verizon are true.
Smartphones like the iPhone are built from a collection of components, which are sourced individually from suppliers …
Component purchases and manufacturing starts don’t typically reveal strong links to individual handset OEMs. But in some cases components have a DNA which is traceable through the supply chain. … The dominant supplier of CDMA chipsets is Qualcomm, the largest fabless chip company in the world. Apple has never procured baseband chipsets from Qualcomm before.
If Qualcomm were to plan for orders from Apple, there would be a ripple effect through the supply chain. It works like this: Apple’s iPhone forecast links to Qualcomm’s CDMA chipset forecast, which then trickles down to their foundry partner TSMC, who uses the forecast to plan wafer starts."
Cheney goes on to report that the "lead-time associated with upside in the semiconductor world is huge, sometimes as long as 26 weeks," which would explain why Apple has already placed its order.
The TechCrunch report aside, there's also the fact that last week we received an email from the Consumer Electronics Association informing us that Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg be one of the keynote speakers at CES this year. CES is one of the biggest consumer electronics shows around and this marks Seidenberg's first keynote at the show. Contradicting reports of a CDMA iPhone in January are reports that Apple and AT&T's exclusivity agreement is a five-year deal and carries through until 2012.

And although less likely, CDMA could also be Sprint, it's not just limited to Verizon.
yeah I would rather them refuse the iPhone on their network. Verizon should stick to the android phones and absolutely bend AT&T and Apple over. I currently on another year of my contract with AT&T and the iPhone 3GS but I will tell you I have no plans to stay with AT&T or any apple phone once my contract is up. I plan to switch to Verizon or Sprint but will avoid any apple phones Verizon carries like the plague.
Second, so they want to offer me a CDMA based phone the year Verizon and other carriers roll out LTE??? That makes no sense. Within several months, I'd have a phone that was slower than every new Nokia, Motorola, etc. Maybe they are a genius, as then I'd have to buy a newer iPhone several months later to get LTE.
These articles and their conjecture are pointless.
Verizon will see the iPhone when exclusivity is up!
