15. The Integrated Fingerprint Sensor And Security Suite, Continued

Before a fingerprint can be used as a security key, its structure must be registered through a process referred to as "enrollment." Enrollment requires successful input of the fingerprint at least three times. Only then will the system accept it as a key.

The system guides the user step by step through the process of enrolling each finger.

Smart system I: For the sake of security the Security Manager registers two prints of your choice.

When using fingerprint sensors, it is generally a good idea to register more than one finger. If you should be unfortunate enough to injure your "key finger," you would be confronted with a locked notebook. But the tool's programmers have thought of this, too. Once two fingers have been successfully registered, the security mechanism becomes active even before the system is rebooted.

Smart system II: If the notebook is protected by fingerprint, the Security Manager asks for both of the accepted prints.

Scanning is as simple as sliding your finger lightly over the white line.

The scanner functioned without a hitch in our test and reliably recognized finger and user. If you have sweaty fingers, on the other hand, it would be advisable to make a trip to the sink first.
