8. Aopen I915Gmm-HFS: Premium Pentium M Mobo

This motherboard could have been designed precisely for use in HTPCs. It includes two DDR memory sockets and a like number of DDR-2 memory sockets, so builders can choose between cheaper, slower DDR 400 RAM or faster, more expensive DDR-2 533 RAM (up to 2 GB of either kind is supported). With dual gigabit Ethernet, HD component video and DVI outputs, and 7.1 sound on board, it's got lots of built-in functionality.

The only downside is the price - at an MSRP of nearly $300, it's more expensive than any other motherboard mentioned in this article. Following initial release of this motherboard, the company retrofitted its CPU coolers with a model that has fins 35 mm tall, which does a much better job of keeping your expensive Pentium M processor cool. So if you opt for this board, be sure to check the height of the CPU cooler's heatsink fins. If they're only 7 mm tall, ask AOpen to send you a replacement.
