7. Altec Lansing FX3021 Expressionist Plus Computer Speakers

Altec Lansing FX3021 Expressionist Plus Computer Speakers, $99.95

Students who are serious about audio quality and design don’t usually have the budget needed for a high-end speaker system. But a dedicated 2.1 speaker set with an impressive subwoofer can be had for under $100 in Altec Lansing’s modern looking Expressionist Plus. We can envision this product meeting the needs of music fans and PC gamers. It works equally well with computers, DVD players, and MP3 players that connect directly to the aux-in jack.

The 10.4" wide subwoofer, which looks a bit like a volcano, can sit on a shelf or desk, or on the floor (the included cable is just long enough). The two satellite speakers (less than 5.0" inches tall with 2.0" internal drivers) look like little spotlights or megaphones that can be directionally adjusted. The power and sub-volume button sits in the “heart” of the volcano and the volume buttons are on one of the satellites.

With 33 W of power and a sound pressure level of 93 decibels, the oomph behind this system is enough to overwhelm a standard dorm room or bedroom at full volume, but dialed down to three-quarters volume, the satellite speakers deliver sparklingly clear audio. Listen up—a student’s small space will not accommodate full-sized loudspeakers (even affordable ones). The Expressionist plus provides the best looking and most resounding thump per square-inch you’ll find for under $100.
