10. Brother 1230 PC P-Touch Labeler

Brother 1230 PC P-Touch Labeler, $49.99

When living in a small space, organization is key. To some people, a label printer smacks of obsessive compulsiveness, but we think they can be fun and easy to use and helpful for setting up an efficient space, especially when the label printer connects to the PC like Brother’s 1230PC P-Touch. The 6.0" tall P-Touch is about the size of a hard drive and features a USB plug. There is no software to install on your PC—it loads automatically each time the P-Touch is plugged into the computer and disappears when the labeler is unplugged. The onboard software loads up all your fonts, and has a surprisingly varied range of editing tools for creating the perfect label. The white and gray P-Touch quickly spits out a piece of 0.5" tall tape with a paper backing. An onboard internal blade cuts the piece of tape off the roll.

So, what items need labels? Wires. The rat’s nest of cables under a student’s desk could benefit from Brother’s flexible ID tape, which is designed just for this purpose. Or, add regular labels to the spines of burned CDs and DVDs and bags containing other gadget odds and ends. If two students share a room, the labeler can be used to mark possessions. (See the label on that beer can in the fridge? That means it’s ALL MINE.)

Kensington Washable Keyboard -- Great layout AND washable. I'm gonna pick up a few of these for me and the family. Great idea.
