China this week launched another major initiative into blocking online pornography, not simply with local websites and forums but also those that exist out of country.

The Internet censorship task force in China has always been very vocal about online pornography and took many steps in recent years to block or remove related content. But now, China is laying blame to Google as well as China's local popular Baidu for the rampant availability of porn. China claims that it is Google and Baidu's responsibility to clean up pornography content online, as not to impact the "mental health" of our generation's youth--whether pornography negatively impacts people's minds or not has yet to be proven.

In 2008, China loosened its grip on Internet censorship due to the Olympics, where China stated that it wanted to show the world that it could be a lot more open about content from abroad. For the most part, many well known sites that had filters in place remain accessible since the Beijing Olympics, like BBC.com.

China's government stated that it was disappointed in the filtering efforts--or lack of--put in place by Google and Baidu. Google however stated that it has complained with China laws, and did not see how it was violating any local laws.

In China, pornography is illegal and even some horror film websites have bitten the dust. China stated in a public statement that violators would be "heavily punished" but did not state in what manner.

Why should the burden be placed on a search engine company? The ability to search for pornography has been around longer than google anyway, maybe China should work with google rather than laying blame on them.

Or, maybe china should leave its Citizens alone and let them have an ounce of freedom every so often.

Porn doesn't kill people... get over it.

On another note...

I'm sure the occurrences of rape have gone up substantially since they started blocking porn. Way to go, big thinkers...

The next Pope should be Chinese. Clearly China is the only country in the world that protects a person's immortal soul.

I dont see any hope for China protecting any sort of freadom. So I'm not worried about that. But they seem to go about suppressing freadom in the worst possible ways. At least it gives us Americans something to chuckle about as our relationships and marriages keep flowing through the redtube gutter.

They probably want to keep the internet cafe's clean. After all, most people access the net that way, not from home.

Then China should force internet cafe's to install filters on their PC's and routers, if they haven't already. No, the simple answer is that China's morality police have deemed porn innapropriate and are doing everything they can to prevent its access. Many Muslim countries probably already do the same thing and we just don't hear about it cause they don't go after Google, they handle it all internally.

From an economics standpoint the whole world has given up on centrally planned markets (Russia - Berlin Wall). China has a free market economy with little regulation. Their government has to either move back towards central planning to retain control of the population or they risk losing control. Increased property rights in China increase foreign investment. The populations standard of living is on the rise. I do not think that China's government will be able to maintain control of a free market economy while also remaining Communist. A free market economy puts ever increasing pressure on the government for more freedom to increase market efficiency. Summarizing Alan Greenspan - The Age of Turbulence.

I blame Google.

They should have known that providing a service to a backward ass country, that has some seriously hypocritical policies and practices, was going to make it difficult.
