Apple Wanted to Buy Bungie, But Was Too Late
You snooze, you lose.
Yesterday we learned that Steve Jobs wasn't at all pleased when he found out that Microsoft had purchased Bungie many years ago, making it an exclusive Xbox developer.
Aside from having Halo taken away from the Mac, it turns out that the reason why he got so livid was that Apple wanted to buy Bungie too – Microsoft just beat them to the punch.
The story goes that Bungie was in a bit of financial trouble and needed some rescuing. Bungie approached Apple about an acquisition. Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, had a meeting with Steve Jobs about it, who eventually said no to the deal.
Tuncer Deniz, once a project lead at Bungie, told Develop, “Schiller asked Steve, who said no. … [But] after a week, Steve said yes. Schiller calls Bungie, but Bungie had already consummated the deal with Microsoft.”
Ed Fries, formerly of Microsoft, told his story of how Bungie came with an offer: “One day I got a call from Peter [Tamte, Bungie co-founder] and he told me Bungie was in a bit of financial trouble, and he was looking to sell the company.
“He told me another company was interested, and asked might we [Microsoft] might be interested.
“That was at the same time when I was starting to look around, quite desperately, to figure out how to get this launch line-up for the Xbox within two years. At the time Bungie was showing around this concept and trailers for a game they had called Halo, and it looked pretty cool.”
While Mac users may have missed out on a modern classic shooter, many more fans got to enjoy Bungie's work.

Just business, Stevie...
Miss out on a conzolized shooter, how can that be a loss? Really, for once i feel happy for the Mac users for their "loss"
If they produced REAL shooters who didn't were designed for a console in mind (autoaim, not alot happening, requiring you to point the mouse within 30 secs and shoot to win) i would be sad... now im not!
A kick right in Jobs' apples
So, he was mad that MS bought them, but he said no to buying them and a week later changed his mind? He should only be pissed at himself for saying no the first time.
I'm glad Microsoft took this game. They steered Bungie in a great direction and helped standardize first person shooters on the console. Without Microsoft's acquisition of Bungie, games like Modern Warfare, Bad Company, or even Resistance would not be as good as they are today. Microsoft's acquisition forced Bungie to convert Halo from an RTS to a FPS.
It's a well known fact that Microsoft shared the method they used to make Halo's controls playable for the Xbox. Dev's haven't reinvented the wheel since. They have no reason to. Bungie/MSFT had found a good balance between auto-aim and manual control as well as a good button layout.
Also, things like being limited to two weapons and melee being useful. Were made popular by this fantastic series. Microsoft was the best thing that ever happened to Bungie.
Well, that is how business works, perfect subtitle :
You snooze, you lose.
Apple snooze, Apple lose :-)
I don't really understand, Halo is sort of a flagship game for the XBOX console, so that leaves the question... What would Apple have done with Bungie if they don't have a console like XBOX?
I'm glad that it ended up the way it did, Halo is such a great game/title and i believe without Microsoft, it wouldn't have been such a success.
you wrote a similar article yesterday marcus -_-
This time it was steve who had to say he was the first to get the offer, thats why he wrote it again. Likely to get a salery raise from Steve who seem to own this site nowadays
you wrote a similar article yesterday marcus -_-
It's a follow-up article now that more information is available. Sheesh give it a break, or write your own articles...
the Xbox might have never taken off, mac would be the new gaming platform, but jobs only has himself to blame after turning bungie down.
This information pleases me.
unfortunately, if not for Microsoft, Halo would have been a Starcraft RTS rip-off instead of the FPS we love today... Steve Jobs would only requested Bungie to put iMacs into the game

lol me write an article? i would but... i have homework
Then do your homework and simmer down.
So, that was all the fuss was about. It is business stevie. You don't act timely, you lose opportunities. I wonder what Bunjie would have been making had it been taken over by Apple.

i have to correct you, or who else will.
if you want to do this, than lets go. the first fps to get it right was golden eye, and perfected by perfect dark wich worked VERY well with that consoles limitations.
i also hear good things about timespliters, a good game with fantastic controls.
now back to golden eye, i believe one button layout was c buttons to move and analog souly to aim, an evolution of that would be one analog to move and one analog to aim
and the reason that it hasnt had a good going yet would be because how could you make it better with only a controller? well i have an idea.
as anyone played metroid prime on the wii knows, you almost cant improve the combat, but i know how.
a wii mote or a move, with an analog stick, and a numbchuck with a stick, that handles movement and moving the screen, and the opticals determine where on screen you are pointing. this setup could be the best way to experiance a fps, the control of a mote, and the movement of sticks, it would rival, and for some people surpass what is possible with the keyboard mouse combo.
but this wont happen this gen because the motes are all made for casual games exclusively.
The only difference between a MS owned Bungie and an Apple owned Bungie is that Halo would have been labelled as 'revolutionary and magical' under Apples dictatorship *ahem* i mean guidance.
If Apple had purchased Bungie, then most of us would have never heard of Halo. Thanks for dropping the ball Steve!
Stop the spammers TH!
So, if I get it right, Jobs wanted to buy Bungie but was too late. Threw a tantrum at Microsoft because they bought bungie. Microsoft felt sorry THINKING he was only angry because of halo, and give him a microsoft games deal as an apology. Somehow I highly doubt that Jobs wouldve done the same if they bought bungie and THOUGHT Microsoft was angry because of a game.
@rohitbaran
Magical games.....
Oh this is really so sad.
Especially with all the suport that Apple has shown to Valve.
NOT
i can only imagine how shitty halo 4 would be if it came out on the ipad .... lolz
I still have many fond memories of playing marathon on my old Power Mac. It was one of the first PC shooters I ever really got into, and one of the first games I sat and actually played for hours on end.
While I don't feel sorry for Steve Jobs throwing a temper tantrum, it really was a big loss for the Mac community, and I'd say one of the main reasons Mac's aren't known for gaming these days. But back in the day Mac's had all kinds of great games. Maybe things would be different if Apple hadn't fudged such a golden opportunity.
Lord Jobs will not be pleased.

Here's a new product suggestion for you Steve.. the iMessedUp
It helps you admit when a problem is of your own doing. Between Bungie and the iPhone4, it sounds like you desperately need something like this.
I remember playing Bungie's "Marathon" titles on my Mac Power PC back in the late '90s. Halo has alot in common with that old title, but with a whole lot better graphics. After suffering from a bout of nostalgia, I downloaded a Windows port of the old Marathon game recently. Fun fun fun... but funny how dated it looked. Sprites vs true 3d monsters... fun, though.
like everything else.... apple is always playing catch up.
Bad business decision. Games are Apple's achilles heel. I still think Bungie made a bad decision going to Microsoft, though. From a business standpoint, of course it was a good. But from a creative standpoint, I think the Xbox platform held them back a lot.
Normally I don't make comments on what Steven Jobs does but, something occurred to me just now. Does he always complain about everything? I mean seriously this was 10 years ago when Microsoft bought Bungie.
