$99 Android Tablet Coming To... Walgreens?
Now you can purchase an Android tablet at almost every street corner.
Over the summer Kmart sold an Android-based tablet--the 7-inch Augen Gentouch78--packing an 800 MHz CPU, 256 MB of RAM, 2 GB storage capacity, an SD card slot, Wi-Fi, and Android 2.1. The device sold for $149 USD, and given the pricetag of several tablets currently hitting the market, that's relatively cheap.
Now Walgreens is jumping on the tablet bandwagon with an even cheaper Android-based device, costing a mere $99 USD. Manufactured by Maylong, the M-150 Universe tablet isn't sold in stores, however interested consumers can purchase the device online and have it shipped to a local Walgreens store.
The product listing on Maylong's website shows the device to feature a 7-inch LCD color resistive touchscreen with a default resolution of 800 x 480. It will also have an ARM9 (VM8505+) CPU, 256 MB of DDR RAM, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi, an SD card slot, a dongle for RJ-45 and USB connections, built-in flash storage (unspecified capacity), an additional stylus and more. The device also measures 7.5 x 4.6 x 0.3 inches and weighs 12-oz.
While it seems highly unlikely that the M-150 Universe will grant access to Google's Android Market, Maylong claims that users can download and install custom Google applications. A product image shows apps such as YouTube, an Internet Explorer-like browser, Aldiko's ebook reader, custom apps and a non-Google Apps Store. The device also reportedly uses Android 1.6 and may not be upgradable.
The tablet is now available to purchase and requires an additional $4.99 fee for shipping.

Not bad. Depending on battery life, this could work quite well as a eReader.
This thing stomps ass all over the Sony Clie' I bought in '03 for $300.
Is the memory upgradable in it, I got loads of extra DDR.
XD
Tablets to the masses!!
I'm a bit embarrassed to have worked on computers with lower specs than that.
I'm a bit embarrassed to have worked on computers with lower specs than that.
hell I remember when specs like that would have had people drooling.
Hmmm. Interesting. Might have to keep an eye on this.

Lol, I occasionally STILL work on computers with far less than that.
resistive = fail

Hell, if you had 256MB of RAM before 2001, you were a GOD! I remember buying 256MB of RDRAM in '02 (bringing me up to a whopping 384MB!) setting me back almost $150!
Not too bad. However, it looks very simulair to the apple's iPad. Notice the "home" button?
I wonder when Apple is going to take notice about that?
Darkk
I'm more interested in the eLocity a7 w/ Tegra2, accelerometers, capacitive screen, etc. It's cheaper than the Samsung Tab, but with basically the same specs.
In the market for an e-reader, and this seems like a good choice if they ship internationally.
I always worry about stuff like this when i cant try them out though. ifits going to be slow and sluggish, i'd rather settle for the reduced features but nicer setup that the kindle offers. I'm just sick of having to be sat at my PC to read my e-books.
Resistive? Last time I checked it's 2010.
you guys crack me up.
of course it's 2010.
it's also $99 because it's 2010.
some of you need to realize you can buy electronics at the dollarstore that used to cost alot more years ago in retail stores.
old technology is cheap as time goes by, because everybody "can do it" (especially when the patents have expired)
The influx of cheap tablets are nice, but it might give users a wrong impression of the entire Android line...much like OEMs make Windows look bad with crapware.
I'm not sure if I have much use for a tablet, but I might be willing to try one out at $99.
