There was a prolonged silence in the world of social networking today as Twitter users experienced an outage that lasted several hours.

Most users expect to see the Twitter fail whale when the site is too busy to handle traffic however, this morning the site was completely down. It turns out the Twitter problems were a result of a denial of service attack.

CNet cites performance monitoring firm AlertSite which says went down at 6:05 a.m. PT and was showing 40 percent availability two hours later at 8:04 a.m. PT. However, timeouts were continuing from most of its monitoring locations at 8:30 a.m.

At 8 a.m. PT Twitter co-founder Biz Stone published a post the the Twitter blog that said the company is defending against the attack and would later investigate.

Who would do such a thing?

Did CNN and Fox News send all the staff home? How else would they be getting their up-to-the minute, accurate stories without twitter? What a farce this entire twitter/facebook/myspace crap phenomenon has become? Do these users remember what a REAL friend is?

Just because YOUR friends don't use it, doesn't mean others don't. It's very useful for quickly communicating and spreading information to lots of people, e.g party's and events.
It probably just missed your generation :)....

Too bad most people don't use it for that. It ends up being a "Look at me!" application.

It was the same person who killed Asmodean, and if you get that, you are as big a dork as I.

tenor77 beat me to it - but that's exactly what I meant! Strange, people seemed more "connected" before these pretentious sites started popping up and shallow people started to display their important lives and achievements. Keeping in touch, if you don't want to spend the money on long-distance calls, can be free via the many messenger options out there. Or for local friends, how about hanging out and having a real talk. SHEESH!

What I really meant was that people shouldn't generalise so much, I don't quite understand how people think that if people use social networking sites they are somehow automatically less social in real life? Oh and I'm generally referring to Facebook, as twitter doesn't really have any features I would consider to help my social life, I don't use it, and I had to take a lot of time convincing the company I work for not to bother investing in it!..

I would have thought twitter users would have been used to being spammed with useless information by now.
