TiVo to Sell Data on Your Ad Watching Habits

Commercials are probably the most annoying thing on television (neck and neck with Miley Cyrus I guess) and TiVo is our best friend when it comes to hitting the fast forward button.
Today reports say the company is going to start selling data detailing which ads customers are skipping and which they’re watching.
Some of you may be familiar with TiVo’s Stop/Watch service, which gathers audience figures on a national level. MediaWeek reports that the DVR company will soon launch Stop/Watch Local, aiming to provide second-by-second data for programs and ad spots, both live and timeshifted. Media Research firm Nielsen currently provides data that includes three days of DVR viewing from local markets, but these delayed measurements don’t take commercials into account, something advertisers have a huge interest in.
Information about "who's viewing the commercial is a big plus for us," says Kevin Gallagher, executive vice president at ad buyer Starcom USA told USAToday. "Is it a be-all and end-all? We'll have to look at it and see."
What do you guys make of TiVo knowing what you watch and when you watch it? I’m alright with the TiVo people knowing what I’m watching, I just don’t want the ad companies learning how to make targeted ads more annoying than they already are.

Pentagon Hacked, But Joint...

Sounds like yet another step towards the "no-privacy" "no-freedom" approach, like we've seen with IPRED, the guilty verdict in the TBP case, and the latest thing to hit (yet again under our noses) us in the nether regions, called: telekompaketet.
I shouldn't be joking about it. They have gone to far, and soon the people will join me, and i for one don't see a need for "non-violence".
Well the online networks, like Fox and ABC only make you watch 1 30 second ad. I am much more likely to pay attention to that 1 add the 5 45 seconds commericials. I usually just mute the TV and get up and walk away just to spite the companies for shoving their propaganda down my throat.
As for Viva Revolution, I'll be right there with you protecting what our forfathers died protecting...

Oh please, making comments like that cheapens what they fought and died for.
They didn't die to save you from Tivo.
If they are going to see increased ad revenue from selling information about my viewing habits I better see a reduction in monthly fees.

Haha, agreed, my good sir!
I think there should be a mandatory opt out. Plus, Tivo should give some kind of credit on your bill if you do participate; I'm sure they are getting paid by the ad companies. The Nielsen group sent our house $30 in cash ($10 for each person) to write down what we watched for 2 weeks!
I like that line of thought tayb.
To another possible bonus is that if they understand which ads we watch it should give them better insight on how to not make super annoying commercials. Probably wishful thinking on my part but I do hunt for the silver lining where I can.
I make sure everything is recorded before I watch it pretty much. If it's not recorded I take a nap, do homework, whatever while it records. Then I come back and watch none of the ads.
There, can I get paid instead of TiVo for sharing my ad watching habits?
I have a hate / love relationship with Tivo. I love it because after experimenting with PC DVR and also my cable companies (Bright House) on-demand DVR HD service... Tivo simply is the best. I just hate it because the monthly fee is per Tivo box. I wouldn't even mind paying maybe a discounted monthly fee per Tivo box but paying exactly the same amount for each account is just too much. FYI - I have the TIVO Dual Tuner HD with HDMI/Component - 80hr recording time.
Why watch commercials for adult diapers when you can watch commercials for something you might actually find useful? I like the idea of targeted ads.
I wish someone could explain how I have a huge cable bill monthly, yet I only see 2 months of new shows ALL YEAR!
Yah, I skip the commercials unless there is a hotie in the add or it’s just funny (rare).
I gave my whole TV away some years ago BECAUSE of all these annoying commercials.
Netflix, radio and CNN.com gives me what I want.
TiVo really blows hard. The Dish Network DVR is awesome. You just hit the 30 second skip button and don't have to worry about timing the TV commercial. And the chirping of the TiVo DRIVES ME INSANE!

I see two: history would only repeat itself & THEY ARE PREPARED FOR IT.

Just as long as they don't target your subconscious too much with the help of those statistics they put to study.
The only reason the shows you love are even made is for advertising revenue. If no one is watching the ads, then the companies that buy the time are wasting their money. Sooner or later they will figure this out and demand for time slots for ads will fall. Put simply, without advertising, there will be no shows. A major shift in the way we pay for entertainment is going to be necessary. Either we "pay" in the form of aggravating commercials, annoyingly obvious product placements, etc. Or, we pay for it in cash.
Your never going to see a dime of rebate, they like all other companies
are struggling just to stay alive. Don't be surprised if your rates go up
5 to 10 percent next year, they are on the verge of bankruptsy.
"They have gone to far, and soon the people will join me, and i for one don't see a need for "non-violence"."
Yes, let's start killing people because they want to know what commercials we watch. That makes total sense.
TiVo has always said they would sell information on user activities, but not in such away that subscribers could individually identified.
If it keeps TiVo in business and rates flat, it's fine by me.
Nothing to see here.
When I watch a recorded show, I ALWAYS skip the commercials. When I'm watching live TV, I either do something else while the commercial is playing or switch to another channel if the commercial is especially annoying.
I want to get paid by Tivo for my data. How dare they sell my personal info, blast me with advertisements, and charge me monthly for a hardrive and some open source software. I think I should post a how to build an open source dvr guide somewhere. Followed by a how to steal cable guide. I pay a fortune for cable and I'm getting fed up. It's complete crap and now Charter has started spamming my cell phone with junk mail. That costs me a nickel per ad.
I've got prepaid, lifetime subscription for both of my TiVo boxes, plus added external hard drives to ensure that I've always got space to record what I want and save what I want. I do not watch any live TV anymore since it is a complete waste of time with some shows having almost 1/3 of their airtime as commercials.
I have no strong feelings about TiVo collecting data on commercials actually watched. I know I don't want any data to be traceable to me, but if the increased revenues improve the offerings TiVo has for me, I approve.
If anything I personally think that internet skanky ho from high school musical who contradicts what all the experts tell other young adults about what not to do and the consequences if they do do such things(which apparently only apply when convenient) is a heck of a lot more annoying than Miley. And I haven't even seen the skanky ho's movies but it still annoys the heck out of me when they put that skank on every other commercial. Damn double standards! Sears and all those company's should be ashamed of themselves. I definitely fast forward through that crap (I don't have TiVo though).
I do however find some commercials to be quite humorous! =) And even if it isn't an add for me if it looks funny or I have seen it before and know it's funny I will watch those. Like the "Pjblands". That's just good funny stuff! =) And a commercial that came out a few years back - I am not a playstation fan I admit but damn that was one funny commercial - there was an add showing a guy playing some ATV racing game online on the playstation against someone else. The other guy kept going off the track and wrecking into the guy we are watching and messing him up. The main guy you have been watching comments, "Who is this clown?" - then que the circus music and the commercial switches to the other player and it is an actual clown! =) That was just hilarious and I still remember it. Heck, all the old bud light commericials and a few newer ones. That's just great stuff to.
