A 17-year-old boy who lost three games of FIFA against his brother later broke into the home of a 65-year-old woman and, armed with an knife and an axe, stabbed the woman several times in the back, stomach and leg.

We've all had moments of video game rage when we may have gone overboard and thrown a controller, but what you're about to read is reprehensible. According to the DailyMail, James Callaghan, 17 at the time, lost three games of FIFA 2008 against his younger brother.

While it's unclear as to how he received the losses from the video game, Callaghan later consumed a bottle of vodka and stormed out of his home with a knife and axe. The teenager went on a rampage, threatening strangers who passed him by.

Callaghan had threatened teenage girls, cyclists and attacked a 20-year old man, all who managed to eventually escape. Sadly, Callaghan forced his way into the home of 65-year-old Irene Roberton, whom he struck six times on the head with the axe, chopped off a finger and repeatedly stabbed in the back, stomach and leg.

Those familiar with Callaghan said that he had a history of violence after consuming alcohol. Callaghan, who is now termed a schizophrenic, admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility and unlawful wounding and is now in a high security mental hospital.

The DailyMail also added in that Callaghan had once played Grand Theft Auto, though we're certain this teen has problems that extend way beyond the influence of any video game.

Here we go again, even if we know it, people like what's his name ex lawyer will hunt us down because GTA killed an old lady :(.

I think we are getting an overmedia coverage of all these crimes that happened before the games were played to this level, just the media is a lot more active and a lot more crimes are being reported.

Ah well, -1 for gaming. And I'm sorry for miss Irene :(. Wish people like that guy would ask for help way before committing a crime.

Newflash: Man, sometime after drinking a glass of 1% Milk, goes on rampage, killing those around him.

Conclusion: Drink whole milk.

This is not game related. The drinking may have been game related but after taking the time to consume a bottle of vodka. The game played 20 min to an hour before should not have anything to do with the story.

Yes.. a game is to blame because this teen has anger issues. Stop headlining news like this with the word "game" in it. The media and everyone blames games instead of blaming the individual. The INDIVIDUAL is the one responsible for his/her own actions.

I thought news were supposed to be objective. Even though I can't say I disagree with Marcus, I do disagree with publishing news containing the author's opinion. Just trying to do constructive criticism here.

We all know FIFA games are bad so maybe we should blame EA for it?
This ain't tech news.

He started off with a knife and axe? He must have thought he was in a first-person shooter game. You always start with melee weapons until you can find the pistol, then eventually the shotgun, then machine gun, then rocket launcher, then uber scientific weapon.

Too bad he never made it past the first level.

PS: His brother is pretty wicked for beating a schizophrenic in soccer... 3 times in a row. Let the guy win once in a while, ya know?

This goes a long way to prove that Soccer is the cause of most of the mayhem and violence in the world. We should ban soccer from the world, it's the Devil's sport!

Blaming a game for this is just a blinder to keep from being charged as an adult. Hope this guy get the worse possible judgment.

Alright so killing bad guys in video games makes you go nuts on innocent people in real life. Simple solution. Let's make video games that lets us kill good guys so that people go nuts on real life criminals.

I have actually done a research topic on the effects of violent video games. There is no established link between violent behavior and violent video games in the average person. However, when a person who has a history of violent behavior and mental disorders and expose them to violent entertainment there can be a link although it is still not clear.

If you ask me what happened in this case was he got angry about losing the video game. Because of this he started drinking and got more angry before going nuts. If you have a history of violent behavior under the influence of alcohol what do you think is going to happen if you are angry before you drink? There is just no way to establish a link between his violent entertainment and his violent behavior. Having a history of violence, drinking, and mental disorders have clearly been proven to lead to violence. He could have gotten angry over any number of things that could have led to this violent behavior ( in this case losing a game ).

Thats my rant for the day.

Funny how the fact that he consumed a bottle of vodka is omitted from the title. A whole bottle though? Seriously?

I hope he gets life. I have no respect or compassion for people who get drunk and then blame their actions on getting drunk. Diminished reponsability? That's BS.

That kid is clearly a danger to society. This kid was out for carnage, it wasn't a tantrum. If you hit someone in the head six times with an axe, chop off limps and stab repeatedly, you're doing it for the pleasure it gives you, not because you are upset.

It said in the article the guy was schizo- yet still it blames games. Toms hardware, I'm sick of these articles. It's obvious tom's hardware isn't a real tech site. They are grasping at straws with these articles. They don't care about us real gamers, and they don't care if they offend us. I've been a fan of T.H. for a long time, but just recently created an account about a year ago. T.H. used to be a good site, but now it's turned into the way the enquirer used to be. Well, I've had it. I'm done. From now on i'll go read on "REAL" tech sites like pcworld, Computer power users, or maximumpc.

Hello Alcohol was involved again. It could have been boy lost 3 games of Monopoly and went on rampage and we would have never heard about it. Dumb! Media Agenda.

Wow. What a weak tie in....earlier that day he played video games, then he killed people(oh and by the way he has a history of violence and mental illness). Anyone who has any sort of statistical background knows that post hoc propter hoc (after this therefore because of this) arguments are invalid. I wonder what he had for breakfast. Scrambled egg based murders might be on the rise!

What I can't believe is the screwed up justice system. He should not have drunk the Vodka in the first place and I've no doubt he knew that. He may have been under the influence but he is fully responsible for his actions. Now it sounds like the powers that be are letting him off easy on grounds that he was not totally in control of his actions. THAT is reprehensible! There was once a time when murderers were held responsible for their crimes and executed rather than treated for a percieved "mental condition." No one wants to take responsibility for their actions and our justice system is only too happy to accomodate that immoral method thinking.

I'm sure this entire family is a model for genetic diversity....NOT..
The kid is apparently broken... put a bullet in his head.. The remaining child should be evaluated and given to someone who will be there for him. THE End.. don't waste mercy or compassion on those who don't have the capacity for it themselves.
