Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare yesterday issued a short press release confirming that Apple Chief Executive, Steve Jobs had a liver transplant at Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute in partnership with the University of Tennessee.

The press release was issued with Jobs’ permission and aims to put to rest rumors that suggest Jobs’ celebrity status had him skipped to the top of the donor list.

“Mr. Jobs underwent a complete transplant evaluation and was listed for transplantation for an approved indication in accordance with the Transplant Institute policies and United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) policies,” the hospital said in a statement.

“He received a liver transplant because he was the patient with the highest MELD score (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease) of his blood type and, therefore, the sickest patient on the waiting list at the time a donor organ became available,” the statement continues, adding that, “Mr. Jobs is now recovering well and has an excellent prognosis.”

The hospital went on to say it provides transplants to patients regardless of race, sex, age, financial status, or place of residence.

Apple has yet to comment on rumors that Steve Jobs has returned to work, sparked by reports from Apple employees who claim to have seen Jobs on Apple's Cupertino campus on Monday morning.

He didn't receive any better treatment than any other billionaire who bribed the hospital :) All billionaires are treated the same over there :D

Tennessee has the shortest waiting list for organ transplants in the U.S. I'm sure there are a lot of sick people in other states that would fly there for a transplant if they could afford it like Steve Jobs can, but then it wouldn't be the shortest anymore. He may not have received preferential treatment from the hospital, but money bought the opportunity.

I bet some of his minions showed up and started sacrificing themselves and donating their livers until he reached the top of the list. :)

In all seriousness though, I want to believe that this was by the rules but I too am doubtful. I guess it depends on how long it usually takes to get a liver from someone with his bloodtype.

I think that short of a 12 year old boy coming forward and proving that Steve Jobs stole his new liver, I'm going to put my head in the sand and hope it was legit...cause I don't like the guy much but I wouldn't wish bad things on him either.

hey at least he didn't go to china where they would have executed a prisoner just to get him a liver in exchange for some cash.

Judging by the last photos of him while he was still at apple, I don't doubt he was slid downhill to the stage where he was at the top of the list.
And to all the people bad mouthing him for getting "preferential treatment" for being rich, get off yourselves. He's a smart guy, who worked hard to get where he is today, and is not an alchy a-hole who lost his liver to drinking. If you'd like to line up the other people on the liver transplant waiting list and judge them on another quality that Jobs somehow didn't meet (other than being the sickest), then you're doing nothing more than shifting to a new standard of judging human life.

So you'd rather he didn't get a new liver a die? I guess that shows your true colors.

A guy that I go to church with had a liver transplant a few months ago in Alabama. It took about a week to get his liver, but he needed tranfusions just to keep him alive until a donar became available. A few days after the transplant an autopsy of the donar revealed cancer. So he had to wait about 4 weeks for another liver.

I highly doubt that, had he been Jobs, he would've gone through such complications. However, it is useless to speculate. Unless someone can prove that someone else died because he took their spot on the waiting list, we should live and let live. I have no use for a Mac, and I hate their advertising and overly priced hardware, but I don't wish anything bad on Jobs. If I had a product that I could mark up 300% and people were stupid enough to buy it, I would be doing the same thing as Jobs.

"The hospital went on to say it provides transplants to patients regardless of race, sex, age, financial status, or place of residence."

So any other 55 year old pancreatic cancer survivor would have been approved by the transplant board? Well maybee givin the senario and the fact that you can transplant a partial liver from a live donor.

It is still a little fishy.

Obviously a child comparison is different. But I would have no problem with people loosing their spots due to irresponsible lifestyle choices. People who lost there livers to decades of alcoholism shouldn't be placed above "that child" who didn't make that lifestyle choice.

It's preferential, but it's ok in my book.

Just thought of one more fact. He had to fly to TN to get the transplant. if he was in that advanced stage of liver failure, wouldn't be difficult for him to live through the flight?? He obviously had a doctor on board but still.

"The hospital went on to say it provides transplants to patients regardless of race, sex, age, financial status, or place of residence."

Good to know a 90 year old cuban refugee can get a liver if he is the sickest one at the hospital at the time. Not a good policy to give organs to people just because they are the sickest.

Why do all you people doubt this is true? You all read too many tabloids. I highly doubt a profitable hospital would risk their entire future and medical license over some CEO that they don't even benefit from....

If it came to Obama versus Bill Gates to receive a liver transplant and only one were left, who would you demand get it?

I'd rather see Gates get it. He's produced something more than a harvard-educated lawyer could ever imagine even reading about in a magazine - A PRODUCT. Not laws, not some presidency usurped by a corrupted Senate and House. Bill Gates has yielded us something we use in our every day lives (though some of you might disagree, as narrow minded as are.). Obama? Just a face to further ridicule the USA.

Back to the subject at hand, Steve Jobs > some scumbag who was given the opportunity by a lawyer, affirmative action and liberal stupidity.

To answer the only foreseeable question I can attempt to fathom from the dregs of human "intelligence" this comment system typically spews out : yeah, if it came to me or someone who made a PRODUCT (not a movie, or a politician), I'd say all is fair and accept my dead liver.

Damn this site attracts nothing but a bunch of angry apple hating zombies. Get a life, there is more to life then hanging up the flag of your favorite operating system and then going on forums to "represent".

Having Apple around is a good thing no matter how you look at it. You all hate Apple but if it was gone there probably would not be a Zune because Microsoft would not realize how much money can be made from an MP3 player. Windows 7 would not look or work like it does because all the zombies would be content with buggy Vista, and prices on windows OS's would be higher.

Everyone takes idea from others and the more players we have in the OS development business the more we all benefit with lower prices and innovations.

angry apple hating zombies... I like that. +1

People on here are far to judgemental of others, yet flame&troll if badmouthing comes their way. I've said it before, people need to grow up.

Back to the topic at hand: I higly doubt that he cheated some poor kid out of a liver. To all who do not agree I say this.. Find me some valid proof. To the person who mentioned china-farmed organs: yes i agree, at least something like that did not happen.

In any case, if you must berate him, do not do it just because you hate apple/apples products. He might be an arrogant prick, but he is also brilliant and has changed the world in his own little way.

oj was too innocent, racist pig, and 2+2 may equal 5, check higher math quantum string theory. 2+2=5 also applies to generics, where two infertile individuals use surrogates to have a child.

hehe... for your information... for liver transplantation, doctor does not have to cut the whole liver form the donor. Doctor only need part of the liver (1/3-1/2 depends) and the 1/2 live left in the donor will grow back (if it is a live donor).

To all the naive sheeple out there please do us all a favor and go live in a cave and stay out of the gene pool. Your only ability in life would be to raise more naïve sheeple such as yourself.

This is not an Apple vs Microsoft thing. It’s not a Steve Jobs bashing thing because you believe him to be a lying, narcissistic, underhanded jerk of a human being. This is about people in power that get preferential treatment above all others. Opinion that says Steve Jobs deserves preferential treatment because he has done such good in the world only show you to be either a loyal iCult member or a troll just being a typical asshole.

I don’t give a flying fuck if Steve Jobs gave the Dali Lama a handjob just because he liked him it does not entitle Jobs to use money and power to place himself on top of the organ donation list. Don’t you find it coincidental that anytime a rich and powerful person needs an operation or a transplant it just so happens to magically appear but a normal person or child dies while waiting on the list? When is the last time you heard of one of these rich and powerful people dying while waiting for an organ transplant?

I am quite certain that a new wing will be donated to that hospital in the near future. Everyone can place their head in the sand and believe that Steve Jobs is good and showing gratitude and wanted to give to the hospital because he felt it in his heart…or you can face the truth that it was originally planned that he would drop $250,000,000 on their doorsteps if they produced a liver for him above anyone else.

We don’t live in a Disney story land where good always triumphs. Open up a newspaper or turn on the tv and you will be forced to see a world overflowing with greed and corruption. Iran anyone??? China??? America??? These things rule and have always ruled. How do we make a change in this world? I don’t know. Maybe we could all start by not worshipping these so-called “celebrities” or people in power. Stop thinking that living in a Caste system is acceptable.
