Sony Wins Injunction Against PS3 Jailbreak USBs
Sony has won an injunction to prevent the sale of USB cracking sticks that allow users to play pirated games on their PS3s.
It was starting to look like the PS3 might never be cracked. Though its rivals from Nintendo and Microsoft were cracked a long time ago, there had been little success when it came to hacking the PS3. However, last week, Australia retailer Oz ModChips reported that they had gotten in a shipment of USB sticks from China dubbed PS Jailbreak USBs. The maker said these USB sticks contained software that could crack the console and Oz ModChips posted a video of the process on YouTube to prove that the sticks actually did what the manufacturer claimed.
Fast forward a week and Sony had yet to make a statement about the availability of PS Jailbreak. Sure, there was talk that the company could ban users logging on with jailbroken consoles, but the company never confirmed that it would be doing so. However, though Sony was quiet about the whole affair for several days, it seems the company has been busy behind the scenes, filing injunctions against the retailers selling the USB sticks.
PS3 Hax reports that Oz ModChips and Quantronics have both been ordered not to sell or distribute PS Jailbreak USB sticks as part of an injunction awarded to Sony by the Federal Court of Australia. This only affects retailers in Australia and is just a temporary injunction effective until August 31 – Sony has until this date to make its case for a permanent ban on PS Jailbreak USBs.

Ban it. Good job.
I am sick and tired of supporting "free leechers"
yeah, you heard me.
Back up my butt. I have almost 50 PS3 games never had one single scratch on it. Blu-Ray has a protective layer. if you still manage to scratch the disc, you're the problem so stop whinning.
People will still find ways of getting it. Like the R4.

nintendo ds piracy protection is a joke compared to sony's
they've been seriously piracy free since its release, that's a feat in itself
Fun fact: They put bleem out of business this way too! The funny thing was, US courts couldn't actually find anything illegal about their emulator [I know this case is different], and Sony ended up taking them to court over the copyrighted game art on the back of the box. Derp!

I'm not sure what practical use this had to begin with... you could play games off the HDD, right? I guess that's good but it obviously brings about a lot of piracy.. not so good.
So, change the game art and it's free to all? Anyway, I think that piracy does drives console sales. The more open a system is, the easier it is to sell them to others. I can see that here in Brazil where a PS3 game costs us around $100.. The people buying consoles ask me "What should I get?", and I always answer the PS3 (I own one) but when they ask me about pirated games they will always stick with the 360/wii because games costs $4 (wii) to $8 (360)..
I always figured the reason it hasn't been cracked is lack of interest.. Even now, blu-ray burners are well over a hundred dollars and a DL disc is $20+
In the PS2 days it was like $75 for 100 discs at the worst of times, later in it's cycle you could get stacks of 100 for $10-20. 100 games for ~$30 is a lot more interesting than one game for $20+
I don't think Sony can prevent the sale successfully in the long term. When the PS3 homebrew being developed, so are the legal usage of this device will be apparent and as what happen to other local case here, they will not be able to prevent the sale of this devices.
Also, how can they prevent import, since this devices originated in Asia? Plug local sale, the other hole will open up.

Thats not entirely ture... during a trip to asia I found copy blu-ray movies selling for RM:30 ($10 US). The only difference between a copy movie and an original one is that the copy disks are only single layer. However, when comparing the exact same movie on both the pirate a legit disc, I couldn't tell any difference.
In short, China could probally pump out hundreds of pirated ps3 games pretty cheap...

Piss off... I certainly don't fancy paying $64.99 for each damn game... especially if it has no multiplayer... sure I'll manage to pay for those that have mp, but the solo games.. I definitely am not gonna shell out that much cash..
Not everyone is filthy rich you know?
Besides, piracy... for the most part is legal (as long as it's not for commercial use..where I live anyways)
And these thing will never, ever appear on eBay...
@cj_online, do you have to be rich to rent a game ($5 per game)? Or subscribe for a rental service (e.g. $15/mo)?
Granted, you'll have to wait abit - but you can still play most of the games w/o breaking the bank if you rent them.
Or you just want to play the latest and greatest and don't pay at all? Nice idea, but mind you in the real world you'd eventually get jailed if you try the same with cars, clothes and stuff.
So what is your point? Computer industry should not charge us at all?
I already paid for the hefty priced console itself + a few games (Renting costs more than buying the whole game itself... I don't keep upgrading every month or so... I stick to a game for a while)
An unemployed full time student will indeed struggle to pay for the supposed "latest and greatest".
It's rather ironic, really...
My elder brother is a programmer. He has a ball programming on the PS3 - even though the graphics hardware is off-limits to the Linux installation. However, this has meant he's unable to update his firmware because that will render his console useless for that purpose. This, by extension, means he can never buy another game for it because of the included updates - effectively cutting off the revenue source for Sony, since they have to sell the hardware at a loss. Further, he can't just buy a new console because the slim machines don't have PS2 compatibility.
With something like this USB device, he can purchase a new, slim console (not a profit to Sony, but still a sale), use the stick and install Linux on it for use strictly as a programming device. He can then update his fat console for gaming purposes so he can maintain his PS2 compatibility, meaning purchasing more games meaning more profit for Sony.
Sure, there are pirates. But there are also legimiate uses. It's the same people that get this thing banned that got Linux on PS3 banned in the first place.

If you can't afford the 'latest and greatest', you don't deserve the latest and greatest. People should stop thinking that not being able to pay something gives them the right to steal it.
Do some holiday/vacation work and use the money to buy some legit games. Trust me, it works...
I thought the ps3 was hacked??
custom firmware M33???
Maybe that was the PSP only....

unemployed? Get a job, losers can't be choosers. Full time student? Then keep your head in the books, your in the wrong website if your trying to save money.
Its probably people like you who try's to save money by buying copied games that software companies make crappy games cause they don't have the cash to make a good one.

there are more things to do out there.
I can't afford a lot of things, should I just steal them all simply because "oh I can't afford it, so I just gonna "take" it without paying, I think thats fair"
Agreed with soky602.
People like cj_online simply fails.

you know what, you are an ass. i have been unemployed for 2 yrs now and not by choice. i am a senior it manager and database manager and i cant get a job to save my life. mcdonalds say i am too risky, and in my field i cost too much. we are in a very bad economy and recession. so say whatever you like, but dont go with this get a job shit. especially for students who are already trying to better themselves getting a degree that may be worthless in time.
^^ i appreciate the costs of producing the games, but if u are saying that people who cant afford them shouldnt have them, then u would accept that there are no sales being made therefore what difference does piracy make but to enable those who wouldnt have bought the game a chance to play if its offline then that can represent their loss for not being able to afford the software in its proper state.
im poor, i lost my job 2 days before being diagnosed with crohns and atm no one will hire me etc cry cry, i cant afford any games atm and am not buying them, nor am i pirating any, im simply going without.
the group i think that can be defined as the loss of sales group are the people who can afford the games but choose to pirate them.
just seems to be a lot of "well im not poor and i can get these so i dont see why anyone else should get a free ride", some of u should consider that your whole life is a free ride compared to some peoples lives.

1) Sorry to hear you have chrons. I got ulcerative colitis myself and it isn't fun... It didn't stop me from finding a job though, but everyone is different I guess. America is hit harder by the recession than we are here in Europe, so I'm not blaming you.
2) A lot of pirates could easily afford to buy their games, but don't do so. They want to spend their money elsewhere or are simply too greedy.
3) Those who really are too poor shouldn't be playing games. Not everyone can afford luxury goods, that's a simple fact in a capitalist economy. That doesn't give you the right to steal these goods, period. It's a moral issue, not just a sales argument.
if you can't afford it, don't play it?
The question is, who exactly loses what, in case he (a guy, who can't afford to buy it / or wouldn't by it no matter what even if he couldn't get it for free) plays a pirated copy.
In days, when Sony was losing money on hardware, I'd have concerns. But not now.
nintendo ds piracy protection is a joke compared to sony'sthey've been seriously piracy free since its release, that's a feat in itself
best anti piracy is to make games no one wants to even pirate like nintendo
I do not condone piracy or thieves in general in any way. seriously question the right of Sony (or any console owner) to control what happens to their product once a consumer buys it. Someone OWNS a ps3. Someone SELLS a usb stick. Someone BUYS the usb stick. Sorry if that bugs you Sony but to bad. Why doesn't Sony try and get an injunction to prevent the sale of the Xbox 350 and wii? They both hurt Sony profits as well.

thats a total cop out. "I cost to much to work", are you kidding me? Offer your services up cheap idiot. 1/2 pay better than no pay. McDonnals says your high risk, now that really sounds like a flat out lie.
If you could POSSIBLY justify piracy it would be for low quality and no return possibility if you are unsatisfied with the product. Despite the fact that there is a rental market for you to test/play games that doesnt mean the current system of refusing returns on opened product is right. Hey SONY/NINTENDO/MICROSOFT, it is MUCH easier to download the game than to go to walmart, go home, install game, go back to walmart, return product. We already know you will zap the key when it gets used again.

An unemployed person has an income crisis to resolve. Gaming/entertainment and other time wasters that perpetuate unemployment do not a job-holder make.

waaah! waah! go work at a call center loser they take anyone especially losers like you
I know it's useless to feed the trolls but whatever...
To the tired argument of "pirates would've never bought the game to begin with." That might be correct. BUT, how many games does a pirate play in his/her lifetime? How many pirates are there? I hope you honestly don't believe that out of all those copies, there would not have been a single sale made. No, it's not 1:1. It's probably not even 10:1. But it's far from zero and if that was YOUR livelihood, it would hurt bad.
And those of you complaining about the bad economy making it impossible to get employment. I sympathize with you, I really do. Not being able to find work sucks. BUT, if that's your situation, you have no excuse to be stealing games still. We're not talking food and shelter here. You don't NEED games.
Look, I can't afford things either. I can't afford a house right now. There seem to be plenty of empty ones across the country that won't sell in the foreseeable future. But you don't see me taking one over even though it wouldn't hurt anyone because I wouldn't have paid for it anyway and no one's ever going to buy the one I'd pick.
The game developers making games for the PS3 are getting exactly what they deserve. They are making horrible ports from the 360 and just moving it over to the PS3. We all know that every single game coming out can look better on the PS3 but the developers fail. Well just for that once I get this I am not going to buy a PS3 game again. I will steal it and be proud of it.
If you can't afford to pay for video games I suggest getting a new hobby. Sure games are not cheap, but you can't expect a company to spend millions on a game and sell it for nothing. If that was the case there would be no games to play or consoles to play them on. That's just my 2 cents worth.
