Madden NFL 11 Obliterates Other Games in August

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

The video game industry took a hit last month, as NPD reports that U.S. sales dropped to $1.6 billion, a ten percent drop over the same period last year.

NPD's monthly numbers are out and according to the group a slump in console purchases has meant bad news for Nintendo. NPD says sales of Nintendo's DS has fallen 38 percent to 342,700 units, while the company's living room console, the motion-controlled Wii, fell to 244,300 units. This represents a 12 percent drop when compared to the same period last year.

However, it wasn't bad news for all console makers, as Microsoft and Sony both saw increases in sales figures for the PS3 and Xbox 360. The PS3 jumped 7.6 percent to 226,000 units, while the Xbox 360 shot up 66 percent to 356,700.

Software sales fell by 14 percent, thanks in large part to the fact that the release schedule for August 2010 was somewhat less impressive than the year before. August 2009 had big name titles such as Batman: Arkham Asylum, while the best selling title for the same period in 2010 was Madden NFL 2011.

Console sales for August 2010 were:

  • Xbox 360: 357K, down 83K (-19.7%)
  • Nintendo DS: 343K, down 55.3K (-13.9%)
  • Wii: 244K, down 9.7K (-3.8%)
  • PS3: 226K, up 11K (5.1%)
  • PSP: 79K, down 4.6K (-5.5%)

The top selling games for August 2010 were:

  1. Madden NFL 11 – Xbox 360 – EA – 920.8K
  2. Madden NFL 11 – PS3 – EA – 893.6K
  3. Super Mario Galaxy 2 – Wii – Nintendo – 124.6K
  4. Mafia 2 – Xbox 360 – Take-Two – 121.6K
  5. New Super Mario Bros. – DS – Nintendo – 110.4K
  6. New Super Mario Bros. – Wii – Nintendo
  7. Mafia 2 – PS3 – Take-Two
  8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – Xbox 360 – Activision-Blizzard
  9. NCAA Football 11 – Xbox 360 – EA
  10. Wii Fit Plus – Wii – Activision

I wish the NFL didn't give that exclusive license EA. I miss ESPN NFL 2K5 and what that could have been. :(

Who the hell is still buying PS3/360 after 4/5 years of being out? Apparently hundreds of thousands of people, so what do I know. I guess they are much more affordable then 3 years ago but they have got to be near the end of the life span, or maybe not.

It took me awhile, but I read and understood all of that.

I don't get it? What you are saying is coherent and fairly intelligent, but it looks like a 9 year old typed it?

They are getting older, but some of the content is enjoyable. I'm not a console fanboy, but I can see the merit in some of the games out there.

ESPN NFL 2K5 was definitely better. Whenever I try Madden now, I can't believe how much it sucks and how people actually buy it every year and supposedly wait in line at midnight to buy it at launch. The licensed music they have on it makes it worse. THat's the case with pretty much all EA Sports games. Why would I want to listen to some crappy singer who sounds like he hasn't hit puberty? At least pick songs that fit the game.

the only reason madden is topping the charts is because FIFA 11 isnt out to rip the sale boards apart...

People are still buying PS2's. You also have to consider that not all of these sales are new customers as people will replace old units or buy additional units.

Sounds like a pretty severe form of it, I feel sorry so many people had to vote him down.

Though really, there seems to be a lot of "exclusive" feeling about many of the deals in sports. I'm no expert, but exclusive rights come with a price tag that some companies are willing to pay since they can rake in big bucks.

Sure it would be great of the consumer to have some choice, but to a businessman, exclusivity is a goldmine.

This is why some exclusive titles carry a higher price tag.

Or a troll (which, considering it is the internet, is far more likely).

He's not a troll, I've already seen him post here. He always write fair opinions, he just write it completely incoherently.

i don't understand how madden sells so much year after year... its the same game with a few new players to update the rosters and minor changed to gameplay... seems like you could control map and modify rosters yourself and save 60 bucks a year

I would, if they actually released good sports games for it, but they don't. The PC even have an advantage over the consoles, you can pretty much play with any type of controller. Keyboard+Mouse, xBox360 controller, PS2 controller with an adapter, a logitech controller, etc. Anything you want to use, you can.

I left the console scene around '99 to join the PC gaming world and I've loved it. But there are just some experiences on console no longer worth passing up so now I play both. I got a PS3 recently and I'm actually mad at myself for now getting one sooner. My PC games consist of FPS games and NBA 2K(which is fun to add all kinds of patches such as jerseys, cyberfaces, sneakers, etc.) but trying to play against others online can be frustrating because of people's different specs and connection speeds.

Plus EA stopped making Madden for PC after Madden 08. They lied to us saying that they would take a year off in 09 and come back to the PC with Madden 10 which did not happen. I know a lot of PC games don't play sports games anyway but I'm a sports fan so I need my fix. Plus they don't make NCAA, Boxing, (worthwhile) Wrestling, and (many newer) Fighting games on PC, so I need my PS3. Marvel vs Capcom 3, Street Fighter X Tekken, and Tekken X Street Fighter on the way!
