LimeWire Found Guilty of Copyright Infringement

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Like Kazaa, eDonkey and Napster, LimeWire may finally go down in flames.

It's a bad day for the file-sharing service LimeWire, as U.S. District Judge Kimba Wood of the Southern District of New York found its operators liable for copyright infringement. The ruling came after the RIAA filed a claim that Lime Group and its founder Mark Gorton committed copyright infringement, induced copyright infringement, and engaged in unfair competition based on the copyrighted content found on the peer-to-peer network.

"The evidence demonstrates that [LimeWire] optimized LimeWire's features to ensure that users can download digital recordings, the majority of which are protected by copyright," Wood said in her 59-page decision. "And that [LimeWire] assisted users in committing infringement."

LimeWire first appeared back in 2000, and has since been a large source for downloading illegal music and other multimedia. Built using the Java software platform, the peer-to-peer client uses both the Gnutella network and also the BitTorrent protocol. In fear of the MGM v. Grokster outcome (2005), LimeWire eventually launched an online store that offered single songs, subscription plans, and video content. However it's still possible to acquire illegally copyrighted content by using the LimeWire client.

The obvious next step in the RIAA's plan is to request (and receive) a preliminary injunction to shut down LimeWire's file-sharing aspect. As it stands, that may very well happen within the next few days. Stay tuned as more hits the newswire.

I hate to say this, but thank god perhaps this will finally kill limewire which has become a safe haven for viruses, trojans, maleware, and more. I don't necessarily agree with the courts, never have, but limewire is complete shit and even the n00bs know better these days, or should.

This is true. Still won't stop my brother from complaining for 3+ hours though. As for myself, guess its back to converting flv files off YouTube again.

I'm not a huge anti-piracy fan, but the horrible infestation of viruses on there has gotten way out of control, not to mention the porn spam.

I used to use Limewire in its hay day as a way to test out songs and artists to see if I liked them enough to buy the CD, before Pandora and Youtube got popular. I found the horrible quality tracks just good enough to get a decent idea. I never understood how people could listen to the horrible files on there seriously. I mean 64 KB/s?!

omg, who the fuck uses limewire in 2010?

This will only lead to a newer and better replacement.

1) buy a boat
2) sail to international waters
3) setup your satellite downlink
4) put a pirate flag on the mast
5) yaaar!

Was a hit when introduced but the internet has come a long way and any form of media including music can be illegally downloaded by just a simple google search. The internet is littered with illegal sites and there is no need for the LimeWire client anymore because the risk of catching trojans and malware isnt worth it IMO. And yes there is still a risk of viruses from websites but most of the time you find a favourite site and stick with it, eg. Beemp3. Bottom line, if your a pirate, you know how to kill otherwise the iTunes store isnt too far 'round the corner.

Yeah progs like Limewire are nothing but noob traps for trojans etc... Then again judgments like these present a growing and ominous problem for *everyone* in general, and that is; case precedence! Now that it's established that LM is liable, this will just further add to the momentum for future suits against even more, less public sources of alleged "warez."

Then again... I just pulled a 50GB USB swap at my buddy's house, so sneaker-net is and will ALWAYS be a viable option. I have so many friends that have been hoarding for a decade or so... I've got literally years of sorting to do, haha FSK oFF RIAA, SNEAKER NET WILL ALWAYS BE YOUR SWORD to fall on, OWN THAT.

Thank god for USB3/eSata coming along, now I can transfer to-and-from their comps even faster... Ciao haha.

Careful, the US Constitution grants power to pursue pirates in all waters.

I think the bigger problem will be, if the judge words here sentence stupidly, every bit torrent client can come under fire based on this trial result.

It will never happen, because they aren't optimized for songs / movies. Only the websites which host torrent files can be held liable.
Suing BitTorrent would be like suing the internet or ISPs.

I repair computers for a living & over half the ones that have viruses have limewire loaded. More people use it than you think. It will be a good ridance in my opinion just to lessen the viruses. It will hurt my business but I wouldn't wish these viruses on anyone.

limewire was good and as long as you are not a full blown tard
it was an easy way to DL single tracks as wanted or needed
also a pretty decent torrent client

You sir/madam are a genius. +1 Wish that I could give more rep.

This is what drives me insane, not only do they being the RIAA and many more expect to "profit" from cheaply mass produced crap that they didn't even make and cry foul play when someone wants to use their "product" for free. There is no shortage of legal loop holes to which one can exploit when copying technology and not a finger is lifted. Double standards on their part, they are thieves and yet they expect every one to play by the rules that they them selves break.

i dont know what people are complaining about..i've downloaded plenty of stuff off of limewire and never get viruses. the only thing that gives me 'virus' search results is when im looking for executables or other program files. audio files are almost always clear for me. Looks like I'll be looking for another P2P soon. Damn RIAA.

If you download a "song" thats 100KB, you get what you deserve. All you people who get viruses obviously need to do a little research, common sense goes 100x further than any antivirus. Besides thepiratebay.org would hijack browsers for the longest time, nothing is ever "free" remember that.

In retrospect I think I'm gonna lose business now that I can't de-virus (trojan/worm/malware) PCs from the majority of people who get infected.
