Google, Intel and Sony Team Up for Google TV

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

Google, Intel and Sony have teamed up to develop a new platform called Google TV.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the New York Times reports that Google, Sony and Intel are collaborating on a project that would see a new generation of Web-enabled TVs and settop boxes introduced to the living room, making it as easy for people to access the likes of Twitter and Picasa as it is to change the channel.

According to the Times report, Intel and Google are interested in "extending their dominance of computing to the living room" while Sony is seeking a boost in the increasingly competitive TV marketplace. Logitech has also been brought in to design remote controls and small keyboards compatible with the platform.

Bringing widgets or the Web to people's televisions is not a new idea but Google is hoping to one-up previous attempts by basing the platform on its Android OS and opening it up to developers.

Though all involved parties declined to comment, Intel has listed jobs for senior application engineers with Android experience to help expand Intel's technology "from PC screen to mobile screen and TV screen." Similarly, NYT reports that Logitech is also looking for Android developers, including an embedded software engineer with experience building audio and video products based on Android.

Interesting idea and collection of companys, although since my PC and TV are in the same room and both can be viewed from my PC Chair or Soft then this idea is a little redundant for my house.

That is why they developed Google ChromeOS/Android and that is why they are going for the 1GB Internet speed. Its all about cloud computing. Few years from now when IPv6 rolls out, here comes Tv over IP with cloud computing. How would like to read your email today on your Tv or computer? Please select one. I know lot of this stuff already exist but its not main stream.

Sony, Logitech, Google, Intel, this could be pretty good if the price isn't raised for the extra features.

Didn't think we would see Sony and Intel playing together. I remember years back when Sony was developing Cell they said they would put it in their own TVs.

Heh, Google is working with Intel now, but I can imagine in a few years we'll have our Google branded CPUs.
