Android 2.4, aka Gingerbread 2, Coming in April
Most of us are still waiting for Android 2.3, but Android 2.4 is apparently only a few months away.
ViewSonic recently spoke to Pocket-Lint and confirmed that its ViewPad 4 smartphone will be packing Android 2.4 when it launches this coming April. However, it’s not going to be 2.4 as we previously thought. Before, 2.4 was believed to be Ice Cream, but Pocket-Lint reports that this update will still be called Gingerbread. The whole idea is to add support for Honeycomb apps to single core devices.
“That’s right, in a move that shows there is some kind of cover-up of the mistake of the lack of Android 2.3 devices on the market (aside from the Nexus S) 2.4 will still be called Gingerbread,” writes Stuart Miles, adding, “The only new feature it adds will be this ability to support dual-core apps on a single-core device.”
Pocket-Lint's source says that the version number for Ice Cream has now been moved to 3.1. Though he offered no hint as to when we can expect Ice Cream, users can at least look forward to some aspects of Honeycomb in the form of 2.4 in April.

Nice!!
One of these days I expect 2.2 to be released for my Captivate. I doubt it will ever see anything official past 2.1 though.
I'm waiting for my Epic to be updated to 2.2 too, I think that will only happen when I do it myself, as Sprint and Samsung don't really care about us anymore. They said it's coming ASAP. However I believe from their point of view it is not possible...... So in this case ASAP = when Hell freezes over.
My Nexus One still doesn't have 2.3
What's with Google and Dessert?
BTW can I have a froyo ?
Why don't they call it Android 2.35 or something instead of Android 2.4
I dont' care what features Ice Cream has, as long as it comes with a choclate flake!
I just updated my Android to 2.2 and I lost the ability to put it on silent mode (vibrate is the lowest setting now). In addition, the corporate email client is god-awful slow now and there is no way to roll back to 2.1
I am still waiting for 2.2 or even 2.3 for my Samsung Epic 4G. So many promises that may never deliver.
I WANT 2.2!!!!!!! MAN

Check sound settings and make sure Vibrate is set to "Only when not in Silent mode". Unless that is a feature of Ruby, I never did check default settings before I rooted and put a GEM onto mine.
Priceless google, not only do developers have to put up with countless phone configurations, but also with your stupidity of having tons of different versions of the same OS. Braindead much?
All phones would be the same version (unless too old) if the manufacturers and carriers would stop purposely holding back updates just to try and push newer phones (which will sell anyway). Right now you can find 2.2 and even 2.3 Android for almost every major phone out there is you root them. ATM I'm running Crystal Clears Ruby ROM on my Incredible and it's running great, can't wait till they release Gingerbread versions (which should be soon).

I agree. I'm trying to stay 'official' with my Captivate until the warranty period is up. Samsung is acting like the update is just around the corner... If i'm still on 2.1 this summer... I'll be rooting away...
At the moment, i have 2.3 on my HD2 thnx to XDA. I just cant wait for 2.4
Sweetness!
Hopefully this means you can get Android 2.4 on the Motorola Droid Bionic when it is released! :-)
careful Google, don't make a mess in the kitchen.....
there is no cake, and ice cream just seems too far off.
Google releases the OS'es. It's the carriers who (usually) don't provide full support for the releases. Reasons for this are:
1. It's a support burden on the carrier: version rollouts are often accompanied by annoyed support calls of stuff new version "broke" (be it true or not)
2. It interferes with sales of newer handsets which already have that version targeted
3. Carriers like to "customize" (i.e. remove) features that Google cavalierly stuffs into its OS. Being a consumer, I like that Google does this.
Clearly there's no getting around that 2 and 3 are annoying to power users. On one hand the iOS upgrades are smooth and natural, but on the other, who knows what features Apple is excluding because of its partnership with AT&T...
Most phones themselves are not OS restricted. Have a visit to http://forum.xda-developers.com/ to see about getting the newest OS onto your phone.

I loaded the congnition room and love it for what it is. That being said, when my upgrade is available I am ditching samsung and never looking back.

The cake is a lie!
I was another pissed Epic 4G user as well until... I rooted my phone, I rooted the hell out of it! I was so damn tired of Samsung's excuses and I just said hell with the warranty. I used the TrulyEpic Rom with Froyo and the ext4 file system. It's lightning fast, extremely stable and suddenly my GPS actually works! If it can take one man to modify a beta 2.2 release (DK28) to this level of stability, Samsung is purposely and deliberately dragging ass. Android phones were meant to be rooted and used to their full potential.
So 2.3 wasn't really useful at all as it lived a short life.

Died before any will get it with US Cellular..
my wife's samsung intercept still has 2.1 with no clue when she can get a 2.2 vertion ... and people wonder why i stick with WebOS , all these updates and because so many different hardware makers to optimize and troubleshoot you end up either jailbreakign and doing your own tech support... or waiting forever for the oem to mayeb eventually get around to gracing your hardware with an upgrade... i think some manifacturers don't update so you have to get a new phoen to upgrade which kind of defeats the purpose of what android was about
i think google should make a requirment of android be that oem's provided and upgrade to an os in a certain period to be able to have acess to the latest build... cause what they have bnow isn't working
