GM Recalls 1.3 Million Cars, Bad Steering
Faulty power steering motors have led GM to recall 1.3 million automobiles.
General Motors announced today that it will recall 1.3 million cars in North America. The news is somewhat of a harsh blow to consumers who already fear problems after the recent recall of Toyota automobiles. But unlike the accelerator and brake defects haunting the foreign competitor, GM said that its recall stems from a potentially faulty power steering motor.
"After our in-depth investigation, we found that this is a condition that takes time to develop," GM vice president of quality Jamie Hresko said in a statement. "It tends to occur in older models out of warranty. Recalling these vehicles is the right thing to do for our customers' peace of mind."
The cars listed in the recall cover Chevrolet Cobalts sold from 2005 to 2010, and Pontiac G5s sold from 2007 to 2010. Similar models sold in Mexico and Canada will be recalled as well.
The AFP reports that more than 1,100 complaints were originally filed in regards to steering failures making the automobile hard to control. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched its probe after receiving the complaints. These also included reports of 14 crashes and one injury.
Hresko assures consumers that the cars are still safe to drive.
"While greater steering effort under 15 miles per hour (24 kilometers per hour) may be required, these vehicles are safe to drive because the customer can still steer the vehicle," he said. "When the condition occurs, both a chime will sound and a 'Power Steering' message will be displayed."
Perhaps it's time to purchase a bicycle.

Power steering is a luxury, not a necessity, as the representative stated. That being said, it's still a bad situation. However, I'd have my power steering pump go out every day rather than have the off chance of no brakes and/or a stuck accelerator.
Time to take my cobalt in i guess, glad its not my accelerator though
For a second, I thought I was on autoblog.
Then I realized that toms just doesnt have any good stories anymore.
Have you been to a ford dealer lately?

Hmmm...1,100 complaints filed before action is taken.
It's GM, thus America, as mentioned. these crashes happened because the people could NOT steer the vehicle. (I assume)
It's America I wonder why they could not steer the vehicle---> Go to the gym!
sorry not a nice comment but if you cannot go without power steering you seriously have to go to the gym. If it was an SUV i could understand if you needed power steering, but not from anything smaller.
Use to work a GM dealership, it also applies to the HHR as well. Even thou they didn't state that. It's all the same parts. The power steering will go out on HHR's if you jump start them, blowing the fuse as a result, which is an easy fix, but none the less, just a pain in the ass. Oh the memories of a dealership.
I find it hard to believe they sold 1.3 million Cobalts, and G5's.

Do realize that a power steering rack has a higher ratio, so there is less number of turns to get to steering lock. The higher the ratio the harder it's going to be without that power. I know i tried (If you can even call it that) steering a 2500HD Silverado, damn near impossible.
I have a manual steering rack in my car, and yes it is easy to steer thanks to a very low gear ratio. Although it sure takes a lot turns to hit the steering lock.

Clearly you haven't driven my factory-Supercharged Cobalt SS; makes all kinds of luxury drivers cry.
To be fair though mine is no longer entirely stock and I actually did have the power steering issue, but it got fixed under warranty.

But if you read the article, you'd see that this is about Cobalts and G5s. The second smallest cars GM sells. Thanks for playing, you still lost.
is this something new???? I have had the same prob with my 04 monte and I know every other freaking grand prix of the same year has the familiar sound of the power stearing pump. Maybe ours just sound like crap while the next years actually fails. Nothing new to me however.
I'll pass on the bike and just buy a Honda.
I wonder if GM will now get grilled by representatives of the owners of Toyota, like Toyota just got grilled by the representatives of the owners of GM. (also known as Congress)
Go Ford! I'm glad I drive one.
Mostly likely these problems were known for years but they are only making recalls now due to pressure from the gov't and the public.
Imagine that, a GM car exhibiting identical problems just out of warranty. My 10+ year old acura and honda I used to drive never had a single problem EVER, and I'm sure they drive just as well today with proper care.
Buy American!
I find it absolutely hilarious that the same greedy American car companies, which have been raping the consumer with their ugly, monstrous, gas guzzling SUV's and Trucks (which cost a marginal amount more to produce, yet they charge a large percentage more) for the past 4 or 5 years, get bailed out by the american taxpayers then switch their lineup to match all the well selling foreign cars.
Now they've got problems since they probably had to rush new design ideas out the door as fast as possible when the greed train came to a crashing halt (pun definitely intended).
I like being an American, and having the freedoms that I do, but to blindly wave the American flag behind such a shitstorm of greed and irresponsibility makes me sad to be grouped in with such ignorance at times.
What's happened to the engineers? It seems they only want to get their salaries instead of giving us realiable products.
See what's happened to Toyota? And now GM? Before this: Nasa Discovery, Airbus 380, all the bugs with various softwares & drivers,...
Even with the powersteering not working, you can still steer wherever you want, it'll just be a bit harder. Nothing to worry about here.
I thought bad steering is what leads people into the parking lot of a GM/Chevrolet dealership. Did not realize that it was not common knowledge that it is a fault.

Hah..... if you think Ford and GM make a ton of money off their cars then you need to look at Honda and the other Japanese car makers.
The costs to make a Civic by importing the parts to the US and putting it together here is roughly $3-$4k depending on the model. Then they sell for starting $16K. Thats about 5x. Ford and GM don't make 5x per car due to the unions.
As for the story, at least GM is doing something about it before it became a major media story. Toyota had plenty of time, complaints and warnings about their problem and they denied it until now.
Toyotas next problem will be the lawsuits for the people who got in a accident or were killed because of the acceleration problems.
For a second, I thought I was on autoblog. Then I realized that toms just doesnt have any good stories anymore.
I am truly sorry you're such a troll.
This is funny American car makers blasted Toyota for defect or recall. Keep your mouths shut stupid(American car maker).

LOL i didn't think just changing a fuse would be that much of a pain in the ass. suck it up princess!!
Hrmm, well its a good thing the Cobalt and G5 are crap anyway, this way we may see more of them off the roads.
Its not as big a deal as the other recalls going around. I have a cobalt and it really doesnt need power steering anyway lol. The cobalts actualy use a different type of power steering. It uses alot of electrical parts. No fluid. Just electronic motors.

You obviously dont have a family of 4+. Have you tried to cram 4 people and a small amount of thier belongings in a Civic or Prius for a three day trip? It is just not going to happen. I have nothing against foreign cars. I purchased my wife an 02 Nissan Xterra and I purchased a 02 Grand Am and a 69 Mustang Coupe. She still drives the Nissan however I was rear ended by an Accord last year. I have since then purchased a 09 Charger R/T. The problem is...i dont care how much milage I get. The Grand Am got 32 MPG, the Charger gets 27 MPG (YAY MDS...not that I give it a chance to work), and the Mustang gets 8 MPG (you want 600HP you get 8 MPG). Why do I not care? Because I can afford it. I like the big, monstrous, gas guzzlers. If I had really wanted one I would have purchased an F-650 for the hell of it. I really get tired of hearing people complain about something they don't own or would not purchase. I dont mind bailing out "American" companies. I personally have not found a reliable Honda, Toyota, or Nissan. They are just not rugged enough. I drive hard and need a car that can take the punishment. It seems that every time I get behind the wheel of one of a Nissan, Toyota, or Honda I break something on it. I was kicked out of the Nissan dealership when I broke a 370z on a test drive. Guess the SyncroRev Transmission wasn't all its "cracked" up to be. (Yes I broke the transmission)

Then why do I see so many '81 (and older even) hondas and toyotas still on the road, and so many Fords on the side of the road taking the dirt nap? I have had two Hondas go 300k miles on the original engine, and my 4runner is at 160k with just oil changes.

Basically what you just said is
"I'm irresponsible with my expensive possessions, and I have money to blow, so I don't really give a damn".
Nice. Remember that ignorance I mentioned? You are it.
I'm far from being a hippie, but your gas guzzling tendencies don't affect just you, smart guy. The more we gobble it up, the higher the demand, and on top of that the sleazy tactics of the oil speculators and their political cronies, and you've got gas prices which will always be, on average, on an incline.
I have 4 people in my family, and although we don't take family trips since my sister and I have since moved out onto our own, our family got along just fine on many a Christmas where the car was packed full of junk.
And that was an old 90-92 Accord, which was at the time, a tiny car.
The American car companies over the past few years have duped the public into thinking they need a ford explorer. Oh wait, that isn't big enough. You should probably get an Excursion. So on and so forth.
You don't mind bailing out American Companies?
You don't mind the fact that the companies pissed away everything they had, in the process of making as much money as possible for themselves and their shareholders, so that the Government could literally reach into your pocket, stealing from you, so that these companies could continue on? You really have to be pretty dumb to "Not mind" that.
