6. Sound Quality and Distance Tests

The biggest issue with the Eos units is the overall sound quality. It was fine at lower volumes, but for anything gut-busting, you are going to notice the lack of any real bass.

You won’t get the ultimate bass response from these speakers for several reasons. The subwoofer faces the back of the unit, rather than being pointed down, so the bass tones are being reflected off your drywall rather than your floor, reducing their potency. They are also very small subs, on the order of three inches. That being said, the audio was fine for non-critical listeners, for playing background music, or for just setting a mood.

Distance Tests

There are two different settings on the Eos: normal and extended range. They claim a range of 150 feet between the base unit and remote units, but obviously the thicker your walls and the more concrete and steel they contain, the shorter the range will be.

My apartment has a lot of concrete and steel. We found that our range was about 90 feet for normal and 125 for extended, which was still quite acceptable for placing the units around a small apartment. If you have a larger home, and your living area isn’t centrally located, you might have trouble reaching into the furthest rooms.

Some reviewers report a slight delay in the sound coming from the remotes when compared to what is playing on the base station, and the delay will increase when you use the range extender switch at the back of the unit. It was very noticeable when the remote was playing right next to the base station, but obviously that is an extreme situation and unlikely to be what you will do anyway. We had no way of measuring the delay precisely, but in a one bedroom apartment the freedom of being able to walk around and listen to the same song was very liberating, and the delay wasn’t objectionable.
