BBC to Put Out Top Gear, Doctor Who Games
The BBC is in talks with developers to make a Top Gear videogame.
MCVUK today revealed that the BBC has plans to make not only a Top Gear game but also a Doctor Who title and other games based on its brands.
In an exclusive report, Dave Anderson, head of multimedia development at BBC Worldwide explained that, despite the BBC's exit from the games industry five years ago, the broadcaster was ready to take another crack at things.
“We’ve been reactive to the market in the last few years," said Aderson. "There were a few opportunistic licensing deals, but we were largely aggregating and holding on to our properties to wait and see how the market developed.”
According to MCV:
No stone will go unturned: the BBC wants to see its brands on iPhone and Facebook as much as it wants to see them on DS and Wii.
“We are open to conversations with anybody in games about all kinds of business models to see how we can extract more value,” said Neil Ross Russell, MD of children’s and licensing.
“Outside of Disney we have the most well-known line-up of children’s characters around the world.”
BBC Worldwide has hired former EA and Yahoo exec Robert Nashak as EVP of digital entertainment.

Dr Who is a horrible IP for a game. The show can be entertaining but I stopped watching it a few years ago as it devolved into utter B-list garbage.
Turn up the difficulty and you have to beat the stig.
I love Top Gear but I have a hard time imagining how a game would work out based on it.
However, I can see how Doctor Who could be a great storyline. Perhaps even a Time Wars MMO?

Then it sounds like you missed the entirely new Doctor Who show where they modernized the series and created two other new series to go along with it. Torchwood and I forget the name of the other one.
I love the new series.
I'm sure if the Doctor Who games are designed along the lines of the new series that they'll do just fine.
A Top Gear game could be fun if you had some focus on their events like finding a car for uner $2000 and race it across country. Or entering a drag race with a fighter jet. I do think the episode with the Lotus and Apache playing cat and mouse would be great. Without these little gems it would be just another Gran Turismo clone.
Pffft, there's already Top Gear games. Top Gear, Top Gear 2000, and Top Gear 3000
Great a Top Gear game! That means we'll get a shorter, censored version of it 3 years after Britain does!
Well, GT5's going to have the TG test track, so what else can bbc make ? Africa/America/Asia specials ?
How the hell one can turn TOP GEAR into a video game??
I want to play as the Stig
there has been previous dr who games
unless its done well, done bother bringing out a doctor who game.

What? The last couple years have been the BEST! You need to get a clue old man.

Hey, BBC America has gotten better. Last Christmas' episode of Doctor Who was on TV last June, and this Christmas' episode aired only 2 weeks after it did in the UK.
Honestly, BBC America would do better to air the shows at the same time. The piracy of new episodes is so great that at Comicon2009, David Tennant (ie the 10th doctor) stated "Tonight, you're going to see the American premier - the legalpremier of Planet of the Dead".

how dare you say that doctor who is god

the other one is sarah jane chronicals i beleive
Though, BBC just reminds me of the Binghamton University frisbee team.
The normal nickname is the Binghamton BearCats. For some reason the firsbee team's jerseys sport a large black rooster with BBC at the center...
I adore Top Gear but a video game, no thanks!
I love Top Gear. The hosts are what really make it though. Not sure how the functional parts of the show will work in the video game. With games like Gran Turismo (if it ever comes out), it will have a hard time pulling in the numbers I think. I'm glad BBC America is stepping up the game and delivering the shows faster to us. And their HD quality is fantastic.
They sensor oh c*ck (which James says at least several times an episode) and mainly what I meant by censored was they remove the news and ALL the talking between the films... but keep the Star in a Reasonably priced car (WHY? most Americans don't know who half of them are).
Ha, who's up for racing in 'Oliver'?

I would love a Doctor Who RPG, but only if it's offline. I have never liked MMOGs. Maybe an RPG with optional online play, that would work.
Oooo... How about a game based on "The Hitch-Hikers Guide to the Galaxy", that could be quite a trip if they do it right.
Top Gear in really good TV show dunno how your gonna go about a game. have challenges with beater cars and sport races with beaters LMAO i'd buy it
Great, who wants to play "Captain Slo"? xD

It could be a racing game based on some of all the rubbish challenges they've attempted. So you'd have to select parts for your toyota suv speedboat, cycle thru london as hamster and race thru europe looking for 'the best road in the world' without exceeding speeding limits, or perhaps with options to be let off by paying a good lawyer - like when jeremy got off the hook after going 180 on public road in an alfa romeo - because they couldn't prove he was driving, but merely that alfa had borrowed the car to him ...
plenty of potential. The only worrying part is that neither EA management or targetted platforms like facebook are going to do justice to the games.
"but merely that alfa had borrowed the car to him"
Sorry bout the poor english there! still a bit tired after the weekend.
"but merely that he had borrowed the car from alfa" would've obviously been more correct ...
Like 99.9% games based on Movies or TV shows it will suck and I can bet on this.

if they come out with a game called top gear i can see game company Kenco (or whoever owns them now) trying to sue the pants off of the BBC for copyrights

they'll just call it "bbc's top gear" or "top gear uk" then
