'Midnight Mass'

I rarely see "Midnight Mass" get the same flowers as Mike Flanagan's other hit horror shows on Netflix like "The Haunting of Hill House," and that's a shame. It's right up there with "Sinners" as some of the best horror storytelling I've seen in decades. The way all the characters stories line up is heart-wrenching in the best way. The horrors unfold on Crockett Island, an isolated fishing community that's seen better days, after the return of the disgraced Riley Finn (Zach Gilford) becomes the talk of the town.

His arrival coincides with that of Father Paul (Hamish Linklater), a priest whose strange charisma and unexplained miracles revitalize the town's flagging faith — until that religious fervor takes a sinister turn. Linklater's performance is nothing short of mesmerizing, and some of the show's most haunting moments stem from his portrayal of a deeply tortured man.

'Dark'

Widely regarded as one of the best international sci-fi series for its consistently shocking twists and turns, "Dark" is definitely one to add to your watchlist for more dark thriller vibes. Set in the fictional German village of Winden after several children have suddenly gone missing, "Dark" follows several dysfunctional characters as they try to get to the bottom of the mysterious disappearances. The truths they uncover are even more disturbing, revealing a time-travel conspiracy that spans multiple generations.

Across its three-season run, the intertwined families, united by tragedy, fight to reunite with their loved ones while ultimately battling for the fate of their town. It's one of the most intricate and meticulously crafted time travel sci-fi tales I've ever seen, a puzzle box drama where every piece has its place, and that can make "Dark" a bit overwhelming to follow at times. But stick with it, and you won't be disappointed by how it ties its branching storylines together in the end.

'Yellowjackets'

I was late to the "Yellowjackets" train, but I've been singing its praises ever since. It's "Lord of the Flies" meets "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," revolving around a high school soccer team trying to survive out in the wilderness after their plane crashes in the mountains on the way to a tournament. The show unfolds across two timelines, one in 1996 and one in 2021, with (mostly) the same cast of characters. One shows the immediate aftermath of the crash and struggle for survival as they unravel from a tight-knit team into the savage killers we see in the show's opening moments.

The other timeline catches up with the survivors who made it home alive, and with all the scars to show for it. However, it quickly becomes clear that the wilderness is not so easily left behind. With their pasts catching up to them, the estranged friends must reunite and reckon with what they've done; the real truth, that is, not the "we did what we had to survive and nothing more" soundbite that only some of the survivors have stuck to in the decades since.
