I am a big fan of long journeys. Watching the scenery rush past, the quiet hum of an engine, the woosh of the tires. I prefer those journeys in a car, however. That way, I'm not disturbed by a socially inept person blasting their favorite drum and bass tracks at full volume out of their phone speakers.

Recently, I was doing some traveling across the country, and found that a coach would be the cheapest way to do it. It would not be the calmest, however, so I was very thankful that I remembered to pack my bag with the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones Gen 2. Drum and bass be gone.

Now my saviors can be yours for less — they're currently $399 at Amazon, thanks to a $50 discount.

The QuietComfort Ultra Gen 2 are a spectacular pair of headphones, with great ANC that defeats everything else around. They're comfortable, handsome, and they sound pretty good to boot. The 30 battery life makes them more tempting than the old model as well.

I love drum and bass, don't get me wrong. Pounding low notes, massive drops, the heady delights of a darkened room at 3am as revelers try to dodge police attention. I don't love drum and bass when it's 9pm, and i'm trying to get some sleep on a bumpy coach ride with 12 hours to go.

Unluckily, they were sat just behind me, blasting an ungodly mix of Jungle, Jump Up, and goodness knows what else. If those words mean nothing to you, just imagine a wall of noise played through an ancient phone speaker. That was to be my sonic fate, as far as I could tell, for 15 hours.

I don't usually wear headphones when I try to sleep, but my erstwhile cabin mate forced my hand. I pulled my QC Ultra Gen 2 over my head and turned on the ANC. Normally, I'd expect the noise of the tires to go, the sound of the engine to melt away — but my d&b loving friend was also silenced.

I didn't even play any music while I got some sleep. I just left the ANC on, blocking out the rave playlist blasting away behind me. Then, when I woke up, I left them on and played my own music. Not a drum or a bass in sight. Well, some bass. and some drums. But not those drums or basses.

The 30 hour battery life was more than enough to get me through the night and the rest of my journey, and the comfortable padding made sure I didn't get uncomfortable. At least my ears were comfortable — I don't want to spend too long thinking about that coach seat.

I'm hoping I don't have to take another coach, given my long experience with this one. But, if I do, I know what headphones I'm packing in my bag to make sure I can't hear the music taste of the people sitting around me.

The first thing going in my luggage are the QuietComfort Ultra Headphones Gen 2 — the best ANC headphones that let me choose when I want to listen to drum and bass.
