Wait, that's not what he meant at all!
Yesterday we learned of an interview with Steve Ballmer that quoted the Microsoft CEO as saying that Blu-ray won't be built into the Xbox 360, but will be available as an accessory. This was surprising to many of us, as Microsoft has always firmly stated that high-definition download were the HD video solution of the future for the Xbox 360. As it turns out, nothing has changed.
Xbox community manager Larry Hryb wrote on his Major Nelson blog that there are currently no plans to put Blu-ray on the Xbox 360.
"I wanted to clear something up. Steve was referring to Blu-Ray accessories for the PC. As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-Ray drive for the Xbox 360," Hryb wrote. "In fact, the future of home entertainment starts very soon when Xbox 360 becomes the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies."
So there you have it – Xbox 360 is still staying away from Blu-ray.

And if Steve sees you with a Blu-ray device during a MS event, he'll take it from you, and pretend stomp on it!
Isn't it a little petty of Microsoft to not include a Blu-Ray drive addon for their X-Box 360? They did offer a HD-DVD addon. Just because they backed the wrong horse doesn't mean their stupid..er..loyal customers should suffer.
It is an addon afterall, so anyone who doesn't care for Blu-Ray doesn't have to buy it. But if someone uses the 360 as their primary multi-media console, why not offer Blu-Ray? It keeps them from turning-off their console to watch Blu-Ray discs they already own.
My PS3 does just fine playng Blu Rays on my new 46" LED Samsung hdtv Thanks anyway crapbox, lol. Why are they even still making these. People are still buying this outdated crap wth?
Blu-Ray adoption is still low, especially given the premium you have to pay for Blu-Ray discs, thats likely the reason for it not being on the Xbox.
However adding Blu-ray would certainly increase its adoption rate which would be a good thing , since it would help to lower prices. But either Microsoft don't want to help Sony, or they have a new product in the wings to supersede the Xbox 360 (which hasn't been exactly trouble free), other than that i can see any other reason for not providing it as an add-on.
Looks like i'll probably be getting a PS3 for my console needs with this news.
Yeah MS. got their Butts kicked on HDDVD VS. Bluray so they don't want to put the competions drives in their console, they would rather fail again than do that. Steaming Video isn't that great so i have no idea why they are even trying to go that route. I guess for them it's that or nothing, it stinks looseing the battle.
Good. Blu-Ray is for PS3. Let's keep it that way.
soldie37: xbox360 is not crap. wth. You are just boasting your brand new tv you got from your rich uncle.
considering that the xbox has a better online service, better looking games, better exclusive titles, and hulu/netflix capable, the ps3 is useless other than to watch blu-ray movies.
Wondering does MS have any deal with Netflex to prevent them from supporting Blu-ray... they seems very close to each other these years.
Maybe MS is working closely w/ Netflex so MS can have much more control (profit?) on their HD media.

it's called buisness, they don't care royalties to sony for a blue ray drive. big stinking deal it doesn't make ms's customers stupid. personally many peopel could care lkess having ablue ray palyer on thier game system , and many peopel will nto give two farts for blu ray untill the disc get cheaper
Blu-Ray players will be under $150 bucks this christmas. If you want Blu-Ray get a player and be happy. I own box a 360 and PS3. Honestly, the both kick ass, however, Sony is still loosing money on the PS3 because of the bloated development cost for the Cell Processor and Blu-Ray. Unless Microsoft can stick a Blu-ray player in or as an accessory to the 360 for under $100 bucks this Christmas, it ain't worth it to them. If you can afford an Xbox and a Flatscreen TV, you can get a Blu-Ray player. Hell other than a Cablebox and the Blue Ray player what else is going to use those HDMI ports.
Besides Demon's Souls and Blu-Ray, Xbox 360 is my preferred gaming console. It doesn't need a Blu-Ray player... it'll just cause the console to red ring faster.
No reason to. I have a PS3 and own exactly ONE blu-ray movie that I bought on sale at Fry's. I'll probably buy Star Trek when it comes out on blu-ray but that's about it for the year I think. The movies look better but they don't look five times better, which is about how much more they cost.
I'm already streaming Netflix straight to my Xbox which is much more convenient anyways. I don't really care if it's not uncompressed 1080p, it looks fine.
Copied from Gizmodo website...
"When I asked Ballmer about adding Blu-ray to the Xbox, he said:
'Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there—you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories.'"
I'm not sure how you get PC accessories out of that. Not to mention, why would you by an add-on (interpreted by me as external) when you can easily 'build' one into your PC? I know some people like the easy plug-and-play convenience of USB, but come on!
I can see them still having a bad taste in their mouth when HD-DVD when bye bye. However the HD accessory wasn't all that great. Personally if I was going to get one I wouldn't buy the accessory from microsoft just buy a PS3. I own a 360 but I don't use it for multimedia just games.
As for the PS3 they still don't have any titles that I would play besides grand turismo, resistance, and FF. and that's hardly worth paying 300 bucks for. I'm not saying that's a bad deal, its a great deal especially because the blue ray player is like the 2nd best on the market.
The fact remains that Microsoft will have to do something by the time the next generation of consoles go into production. DVDs have reached their limit on data storage, so what else does Microsoft plan to do? Put their games on really large USB thumb drives? Go to a cartridge system? Invent a new laminate disc that will compete with Blu-ray disc?
I highly doubt that any of those will occur. Microsoft could try and only offer games that are delivered digitally, but few customers would be interested in this being the only method of obtaining a game. Since so many of the companies today mistreat their customers that own digital content, not many people are interested in digital-only content delivery.
Bluray is the future, but I can see why the xbox 360 doesn't have it. No one wants to have an xbox that has to be connected to both a wireless adapter and a blu-ray external drive in their home theater, too much of a mess. PS3 looks a lot better aesthetically.

So you think if HD-DVD would have been the victor, Sony would have jumped on the HD-DVD bandwagon? Never. This is the nature of the game my friend and you can't fault Microsoft for it. I don' own an xbox, in fact my last console was (is) a GameCube - though I can't find it anymore...I think the dustbunnies stole it! Get over it. You want blue-ray, but a player or a Playstation 3!
Why buy a movie once when you can buy it every time you want to see it!
YAAAAAY!
I personally would LOVE to see Blu-ray in the XBOX 360, but just like the HD-DVD add on did two years ago, it wouldn't be a big seller.
I'd even say they'd be likely to put games on multiple DVD's and make you install them to the hard drive, but customers wouldn't be having that, either. People who have sizable collections of games would be forced to upgrade to larger hard drives and face it, they want their systems to work right out of the box and to not have to buy even one extra thing for them. Not even a larger hard drive for more storage. Don't believe me? All I can say is we've seen this before. I have two words for you...
"Sega CD"

LOL.
Better online service, that is true. Better looking games? LOLLOL. Uncharted 2 anyone?
Better exclusive titles, that's all because Microsoft likes to swing their big dick around and companies come and suck it dry to make exclusives.
And cool for netflix, at least I can stream movies over WI-FI out of the box, have fun trying to do that with the Xbox out of the box.
Oh and blu-ray is a very nice format to use for games, much more space.
Oh and I forgot to add, PS3 has a lot of features the 360 has minus RRoD.
If you could get one box with all of the Wifi, HD, streaming, blu-ray, and gaming technology there is currently, that'd be pretty sweet. Why these companies decide to limit themselves in one area or another makes no sense. I know in some cases it's not their decision, but I haven't committed to either Xbox or PS3 because of this situation. I have however committed to a completely upgradeable PC which seems to allow me to do all of these things.
I agree with others that a BLU-Ray option for the 360 doesn't make any sense. I also have both consoles but have never considered buying a BLU-Ray DVD. Also, I find myself buying less and less standard DVDs anymore and simply use Netflix streaming or Hulu.net.
Considering the support cost alone they would end up having to charge more than what a stand alone BLU-Ray device will cost in a few months, as well.
I don't see any upside for them, honestly.

@dman3k
We don't need another troll like you here. Got links? Proof of what you say? You sound like another XBOX fanboy who is clueless.
BTW - PS3 is Hule/Netflix capable. Do a google search for Mediamall PlayOn. It works for both platforms, btw.
You F*cking loser. Get a clue, then post.
streaming video a decade ago was a blurry postage stamp. Now it's a blurry 100" image on my projector. In a year or two, streaming HD will look "good enough", as it does for many. If it's a TV show streaming off netflix, or a movie where absolute crystal sharp image is not as important (to me anyway) then it's already good enough. Personally, I like the more "film-like" look you get with streaming. I was in Fry's electronics the other day looking at the 50"+ TVs and the images looked too crisp - almost like watching an old camcorder. To be fair, some of these had their stupid 120Hz or 240Hz fake interpolation which makes even classic movies look like a sitcom from the 80's. But I also watched Casino Royale (new one) on Blu-Ray on a 70" rear projection Mitsu. There was definitely more detail but I can't say I enjoyed the movie more. I enjoyed the experience, as my first blu-ray movie and we rewatched same on standard DVD, including several scenes played on both over and over for comparison. It was all an interesting lesson in technology. I did notice any improvement in sound since hardware was 5.1 anyway. Both sounded fantastic. If anything, the audio experience at home is superior to the local cineplex. If Microsoft wants to improve viewer experience, I say stay away from Blu-Ray until it's the cheap standard that DVD is. More importantly, streaming needs to be improved not in resolution but in reduced hiccups, less screen tearing, etc. I don't care if it's 720 or 1080 but I don't want to have the movie stop in midstream. My wife won't even watch streaming movies right now because of the annoying stuttering you get about 1/4 of the time. Of course this is not all MS, some is internet provider, graphics card, etc. There's always a place for media but streaming I think will be the major form with plastic the minor. But I don't want to have to backup terabytes of movies that i paid for/pirated - it's too expensive when I can have a disc. (I would like too see a lifetime media warranty for Blu-Ray)
GO Microsoft with giving choices, not ramming it down your throat for once!
Too much pride to admit a mistake. Ok if you set the standard. Who are the losers here?
Oh and I forgot to add, PS3 has a lot of features the 360 has minus RRoD.
Just let me remind you that without the X360 you'd still be paying $599 per console. I own all 3 and each one serves a certain niche. I use the PS3 for blu-ray and some first party titles but their third-party adoption sucks hard. The X360 I use for their vastly superior online play, Netflix streaming and to be fair, most gaming. The Wii I generally use for franchises that I wouldn't like to let go of (Mario, Metroid, Zelda, etc) and some if it is a lot of fun to pull out when I have people over. However, even though their third party support surely isn't lacking, it still sucks. Everyone and their brother wants to make a game on the Wii. The last good (non first-party) game I got for that was 'No More Heroes' since then it's been dry, IMO.
Ultimately, my original point was without competition this industry would suck, any industry would suck.
Sony fanbois wouldn't recognize the truth. I don't even have an XBOX - I'll play games on the PC. But I do have a PS3 that is only used to watch blu-ray movies. It is otherwise useless.
Mediamall PlayOn? Really? Is that the solution to Hulu/Netflix? Why not just frigging watch it on the computer you're streaming the videos from? This has to be the stupidest Sony fanboi defense ever. Not only does the original PS3 sucks more power, it also needs to suck additional power from the PC just to watch Hulu or Netflix videos... ROFL!
Facts:
*XBox has better graphic card.
*PS3 is much harder to program for and the developers are lazy on it. Who cares if the PS3 has one more usable processing core?
Better graphics and better games on the XBox - FACTS! Anyone who says otherwise are just blind haters.
Oh, and Microsoft kinda really annoys me on this one. If in the original interview they were talking about the X360 and the question was ABOUT Blu-ray on the X360, then the ANSWER was regarding the X360. His answer was
"Well I don't know if we need to put Blu-ray in there-you'll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories."
It's obvious to me he was talking about a piece of hardware hardware. 'In there?' In what? Windows? Windows is hardware?
All this boils down to is another situation where the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Did someone high up in Microsoft want a Blu-ray add-on for the X360 and not tell the xbox division? Did the xbox division decide to scrap the Blu-ray idea and forget to tell their CEO? Was the whole blu-ray accessory thing supposed to be a 'big surprise' but since someone reputable let the cat out of the bag early so now the xbox division has to cover-up and lie about WHAT THEIR CEO SAID so they can release said accessory in a few months, give 'jazz hands' and go 'ta-da' and when someone says, well wasn't this announced a few months ago and you denied it they'll just say "yeah, well... we changed our minds."
Depending on what the situation may be, either stop leading people around by the ear, get a CEO that knows what the hell is going on in his own company or improve your ability to communicate across divisions.
Major Nelson, I call bullsh*t.
