Best Video Games of the Year at the VGA 2009
Congrats Nathan Drake, you're a winner.
Over the weekend was the Spike Video Game Awards 2009, naming the very best of the year from one of our favorite hobbies.
As usual, the video game industry saves its best for the end of the year, hoping to cash in on the holiday buying season. Aside from a couple of titles, this year's winners will be occupying a lot of the holiday time off for gamers (although many of these are so irresistible that they've likely already been cracked open and well-played).

• Best Multiplayer Game: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
ummmmmmm..... what?
Best Multiplayer Game: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ??????
I have it AND IT A BAD MULTIPLAYER GAME.
Just players rushing with akimbo shotguns...
It just looks like the first quake multiplayers to me: just running arround and firing first or with the most effective gun.
Were is the strategy ?
Were is the cooperation between players ?
Were is the balancing of teams ? I've played hundreds of games and 90% were clearly unbalanced. Worse, when you start at level 1, you play against level 50 to 70 most of the time. I would have like to wait 2 minutes before playing but playing with newcomers at the beginning...
L4D(2) is much better here: you can't do anything alone... And having played 100h doesn't give you better weapons...

mw2ftw
I'm happy to see Uncharted 2 hit game of the year and other awards.
I haven't seen Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, but I really doubt it has better graphics than some of the PC games.
Dragon Age Origins, game of the year baby!
• Best Multiplayer Game: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2ummmmmmm..... what?
Uhm xbox 360?
and hell yea Dragon age was...is the best PC game out right now.
L4D2! for the Win! Well atleast second place
It's sad that the best graphics award went to a console game...
What the hell? Rocksteady was studio of the year but Arkham Asylum didn't even get best game? Not even on 360?
• Best Multiplayer Game: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2ummmmmmm..... what?
+1
[*] Best Multiplayer Game: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
[*] Best Shooter: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
FUK IW and Cod:MW2. It's an over rated POS.
Quake, CoD(Oroginal & Cod4), HL2, Crysys, Farcry. THOSE are the good games.
They should have an awards ceremony for "PC Games of the Year".
I know L4D2 is an awsome game, but... It doesn't have "story mode", so... What was the ruling in that one? o.O
I would've put MW2 in there instead of L4D2, just because of the story and solo play value. But that's me, lol.
"So so" chart IMHO.
Cheers!
MW2 was definately the best shooter, but not the best multiplayer.
CoD multiplayer in a nutshell:
Can you aim... at all?
Did you see the other guy first?
If yes to both, you win!
The only strategy is getting to a decent vantage point - which just barely counts as strategy.
do these people actually play these games before awarding them? dragon age is OK i suppose. MWF2 with no dedicated servers? good single player but where is the multi? this is a shooter where multiplayer is the make or break for replay value.
can we actually have awards for games that are good and not just those that are released within the past 4 weeks.
I don't really understand the whole thought process for giving L4D such good reviews/awards.

One of the criticisms of Borderlands (which held some of its reviews back) was that the story was not very engaging. I see borderlands held back into the 8's range and yet somehow L4D and L4D2 both broke well into the 9's.
Sure I agree that L4D has a great coop experience, but so does Borderlands, and with Borderlands you get something a big more innovative, something better looking, and something with a lot more replay value (via rpg elements) IMO.
I WILL say that I really don't like how in Borderlands you can't have split screen coop. I like to play with my brothers via Live, but I can only play with one because of this issue. I just don't understand why they made it like this when there are plenty of other games, such us L4D and Halo 3, that do offer this kind of multiplayer experience.
Anyways that's my bit. I'm waiting for next year when more good games will be coming out
**bit
not big
I haven't seen Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, but I really doubt it has better graphics than some of the PC games.
Maybe you should actually play the game.

All that is in Halo 3 in high level MLG (which you need ODST to play). It may not be the best game ever made, but it is the best competitive game ever made. The amount of skill, strategy, and team work involved make it incredible if you're good enough at it.

i think he's talking about RTS when he said strategy, not gameplay strategy

Basing that on hardware specs alone?

Lol. Halo 3 takes a LOT of strategy once you start playing level 50 MLG. You have to maintain setups, sync pushes, communicate with teammates, and control spawning among other things. If you were to go to an MLG event you would see that most teams even have a coach that helps out during games.
They should just call this: Spike 2009 Console Video Game Awards
PC gaming is dead

according to spike, or at least pc gaming isn't big enough to make their list.
but hey, it's spike. they are pretty mainstream right?
Hahah these are humourous.
Best Xbox 360 Game: Left 4 Dead 2
Best Performance By A Human Female: Megan Fox
Really? The BEST Xbox had to offer this year? Yikes... and Megan Fox best 'Performance'? Hahahaha her acting was terrible; luckily she didn't even have to perform.
Dragon Age was brilliant, L4D2 was great fun, MW2 was very very shiny... Hell PC gaming is brilliant.
im shocked!! completely shocked!!....people watch Spike??!!
It's sad that the best graphics award went to a console game...
Agreed, Uncharted does look awesome tho, except for being 720p with no AA... its what you get when a good dev focuses on getting the most out of one device, rather than just settling for good enough on all platforms to get the most money (ok, I know they are owned by Sony.)
I think its just been a slow year for PC. not many exclusives, and its too much to ask for a lazy greedy multi-platform dev to actually develop something properly on the PC while they are busy chasing the hords of jocks and idiotic ADD riddled teens and their parent's money with the xbox.
Well you certainly didn't try to avoid being an ass...
WTF jocks? What does that have to do with Xbox? It sounds to me like you are one of those guys that got beat really really bad by a kid who's balls had not even dropped yet on Halo or something (thus your comment about ADD riddled teens).
I support all gaming platforms and realize that each platform brings something different to the table. But I think we should all grow up a little (matt) and stop trying to stereotype different platforms or the people that use them. Just because the xbox is having success doesn't mean people need to bitch about how their platform of choice is getting left behind due to teens and jocks (wtf???).
On a last note, everyone is calling the devs "lazy and greedy". What the hell do you think is the point of developing a game? I can tell you, its to make money you moron. Game devs are going to do whatever they can to minimize costs and maximize profits. If this means developing for multiple platforms then that's what they will do. People forget that this is a gaming INDUSTRY. INDUSTRY being the key word. INDUSTRIES make money. If instead they decided to submit to the demands of all the whiners out there, they wouldn't be making nearly as much money. And then what? THEN the gaming industry would dwindle away until it was no longer profitable. Say goodbye to gaming industry.
whine, whine, whine. too many whiners on here.
made the right choice uncharted 2 is an awesome game
Xbox really does not deserve the support it is getting because it was a badly designed peace of hardware that does not deserve the popularity it is getting because of that point
Borderlands? Where is that? I liked it anyway.
Thought Dragon Age and Modern Warfare 2 would be up there, though MW2 is Overrated.
Batman Arkham Asylum was also good and should at least get an honorable mention.
No Arma 2? Easily best Sim Shooter.
