Analysts Pick Sony PS3 to Win Current Console War
PlayStation 3 to be long-term winner, says experts. And if not, it'll still play your Blu-rays.
Although Sony's offering got off to the slowest start of the current console generation, an analyst is picking the PlayStation 3 as the eventual winner in the battle against the Xbox 360 and Wii.
In a new forecast published by the Strategy Analytics Connected Home Devices service, lifetime PS3 sales are predicted to reach 127 million units, compared to 103 million Wii units. Oddly, the press release did not detail estimates for the Xbox 360.
"Nintendo has done a great job with the Wii in bringing console games to new audiences," says David Mercer, Principal Analyst and report author. "But its sales are now falling, particularly in mature markets, and its installed base will peak in 2011. Ownership of both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will hit their highest points between 2012 and 2014."
The Nintendo Wii right now is the undisputed leader in sales, but Strategy Analytics predicts that the PS3 will still be a commercial platform five years after the Wii has been replaced – giving it a longer tail to accumulate more sales.
In a blog post, the analyst firm noted that introduction of new technologies such as Project Natal or 3D support could affect sales projections depending on their success.
Strategy Analytics models also indicated that ownership of current systems will peak in 2011, at which point the firm believes that the game platform owners will need to introduce new systems for the next generation.

Well the PS3 only does everything.
i dont see how they came to this conclusion...
The biggest title, the over-hyped IW's byproduct, has sold more on xbox360... and yet the two systems are very comparable. isnt that an indicative that the xbox360 consoles are more abundant?
if the blue ray is the main variable underlying this projection, well what about the fact that the cost of stand alone blue ray players are going down?
i dont see how they came to this conclusion...
Because they are looking 3 to 5 years down the road. The xbox360 was first to market and kicks butt now, but it will look long in the tooth when the ps3 is hitting its full stride.
This was a given, it wasn't a matter of if, but a matter of When. The PS3 is far superior to all the
other consoles. If it doesn't play Bluray it's garbage, once you have Bluray you don't care about anything else. The Controller on the PS3 is hands down better too!
i dont see how they came to this conclusion...
If you know anything about hardware the ps3 potential is beyond the xbox360, most games use 1/4 of the power it has at it's disposal.
If the 360 had better hardware then why are they not used for folding@home?, why is the military not buying 360's? and why do largest rings of crackers use many networked ps3's to crack SSL?.
The bluray is only icing on the cake, the bluray is not just for movies but games having more storage on one disk means more content and last of all if you say you can't see the diff between a dvd movie and bluray you need your eyes checked.
on a related note, the M$ has posted job for motherboard design for XBOX team:

The 360 has 512 MB of RAM to be used however. The PS3 has 256 MB on CPU, and another on the GPU. The PS3 does have more CPU power, but it is a good near infinitely harder to actually use it. All of this makes them both effectively similar as far as that goes. (if you're making comments on their relative abilities)
The xbox 360 has been annouced to stick around well after the next console comes out. If you were referring to how people are still buying PS2's and assuming that the PS3 will sick around relatively as long comparing the original xbox and the PS2.
Can't say I disagree.
I'm an avid PC gamer, and only bought a PS3 for the exclusives and Blu-Ray, but it is quite the console. Anyone who hasn't played the MGS series needs to, it's hands down the best gaming I've ever done. Owning a 360 and a gaming PC doesn't make much sense, cuz pretty much the only game that the 360 has that the PC doesn't is Halo.
They've been saying this for over four years now. Yawn. The Wii has more consoles sold than MS and Sony combined.

the CELL PROCESSOR of PS3 is better at mathematical calculations over the XBOX360's... But PS3's GPU is very comparable to that of XBOX360 (although back then, X1900 series were better than GeForce 7800 series) since they belong to almost same generation...
PS3 has a fast ram but very little of it, its harder to program for and ... XBOX360 is much simpler solution, it has started earlier and cheaper to produce game for than PS3... (atleast thus far)
there is only so much PS3 can handle, due to its hardware limitation its not that much more than xbox 360s. If you consider the fact that NATAL is coming and Micro$ofts renewal of the console, its not so obvious to why the projection favors PS3
I didn't read the blog post but I don't think the analyst would arrive to the same conclusions if say MS releases a BD enabled XBox 360 or if Nintendo refreshes the console or perhaps releases a new console in 2 years.
I completely agree with the analysts prediction. Blu-ray is one of the reasons I chose the PS3, and it is absolutely beautiful on a 50inch plasma TV... not to mention the amazing 24 bit 5.1-7.1 channel uncompressed surround sound. While the sound may not be as important to other people as it is to me, honestly if someone can't see the difference in detail (resolution) compared to a regular DVD or upscaled DVD, then they should at least see the difference in color depth and vibrance when the right plasma or LED lit LCD is used. I digressed, but honestly the cell is an amazing processor and XDR ram (I think that's the name) is blazing fast allowing massive amounts of information to be transferred from the cell to ram, but other than for Folding@home, I do not believe it's being used near its potential. Overall I am excited to see what games in 2015 look like on the PS3... I'm sure they will blow the xbox 360 out of the water as I believe current games are using almost all or all of its processing power. (The processor architecture (I think it was netburst) currently is so far ahead of what is in the xbox 360, whereas not that far ahead of the cell.)
BTW I own all three systems so I am not a fanboy or all that biased.

lol. 1/4th of the power? Is it fun to pull numbers out of your ass? Must be.
And I'm laughing at your main arguments here that the Xbox 360 is slower because 1. It doesn't do folding@home, 2. The military isn't buying Xboxs, and 3. That "crackers" use the PS3.
First, Microsoft doesn't allow folding@home. The Xbxo 360 has plenty of horsepower and an almost equal amount to the PS3. Anyone claiming the PS3 is significantly more powerful is completely blinded by fanboyism.
Secondly, the military TRIED to buy consoles from Microsoft and Microsoft told them flat out "no." They wouldn't make money from selling them so they declined to sell them to the military.
And lastly, "crackers", as you so eloquently called them, don't use the Xbox 360 because, once again, it isn't anywhere nearly as easy as to use a PS3. Microsoft hasn't and never will allow third party OS downloads and runs a very tight ship. Sony doesn't.
Duh.
Nobody doubts BLU Ray is a superior technology over DVD... It is the issue of whether the consumers would still buy PS3 over XBOX360 purely because of its BLU Ray feature... Note the fact that for a very long time, PS3 was flavored with CHEAPEST BLU RAY tag and had the advantage.
but over time, this is not going to be true. Blu Ray stand alone players are getting cheaper.
ALSO, you have to consider a release of xbox360 blu ray and project natal
or the release of slim xbox or a next gen xbox which could drive the costs of the console significantly lower than PS3 slim
They've been saying this for over four years now. Yawn. The Wii has more consoles sold than MS and Sony combined.
The Wii youve got to be kidding. Not even in my vocabulary. Idiots buying that along with the crapbox. High End PC gaming is where its at and the PS3 is the best Blu ray player period. If you dont have either you just need to crawl under a rock.
If I were to buy a console it would be a PS3 hands down.

that's mean!!!
however, +1 for the comment on Wii but then again wii is the only GF friendly activity for lifeful people and people practicing pervertism
I think the PS2 won this console war.
Think about it.
I think the PS2 won this console war. Think about it.
I would say the original XBOX won.....
By this analyst's logic, Wii could win if they just kept making them FOREVER. Cheerleading for sales of a product that's still on the market years after it's competitors have released NEW versions isn't exactly "winning".

Fact:
Ps3: 51 billion dot product operations per second.
360: 33.6. billion dot product operations per second.
Also atm most games only use 40% max of the ps3 potential
I can post a dozen links to this technical info.

take it outside!
"Oddly, the press release did not detail estimates for the Xbox 360"
Yes, that is odd. What's the point of looking at total sold over X period of time, and not make an estimate or release figures on the numbers of Xbox 360. It smells fishy to me.
So yea... the PS3 will be hitting full stride right as the next gen is starting... gg Sony.
The Wii youve got to be kidding. Not even in my vocabulary. Idiots buying that along with the crapbox. High End PC gaming is where its at and the PS3 is the best Blu ray player period. If you dont have either you just need to crawl under a rock.
Nintendo have done an amazing job with the wii. If you cant recognise that then your the one who needs to get out from under the rock. The wii is the most technicaly inferior to both the ps3 and xbox360, yet it is on top at the moment. The wii is basicly running on 10year old technology, sure you might think that the control is a gimic, but its a really really fun gimic that 10's of millions of people really enjoy.
Hard core gaming isnt were its at, as nintendo have proved that this generation. There is of course one other platform which everyone so far has over looked, and thats the PC, its still going strong after how many years?!
Fact
The problem is, while PS3 is better on parallel processing of mathematical operations, the problem is the system is bounded by its graphic card and memory and hard programming.
ALSO, you have to consider a release of xbox360 blu ray
If MS releases an BD enabled XBox360 than that would mean a NEW console. Why? What would be of the older 360's?? Collect dust for all eternity because MS has a history of killing the support for older hardware (See the original XBox)..
A slim 360 would mean A LOT OF HEAT so, yes, it's possible, but if you take that the PS3 PSU is inside the unit than you can see that the PS3 is really smaller than the 360..
BTW, I own a 360 and PS3.. But with Heavy Rain being played now on my PS3 I can really say: The 360 won't outlast the PS3.

Quote of that article:
"The quality of the depth of field we have, you can't do that on the Xbox."
Also, there's Final Fantasy XIII..
I still love my 360, but I'm playing my PS3 a lot more.. I'm done with the "FPS centric" console for the time being.
I hate these dumb 360 vs wii vs PS3 arguments. Each one of these systems wins in certain areas. Anyone who says "this ONE is the best..." and all that is just some overly loyal person to what? A console?
The Wii has sold the most consoles, and has rejuvinated a lot of game playing by all kinds of people who never would have played games before. Their games are bar none the best for family and children.
The Xbox 360 sells the most games, more games then PS3 and Wii combined. Whats that mean? It means its a damn fine gaming system. And the Xbox Live system is soooo awesome (if you love playing lots of games and getting rewards and stuff, and love a huge online network of gamers) and 50 bucks a year aint bad for that.
The PS3 is awesome in the fact it has the most processing power, a built in Blu-Ray player, and it's games also benefit from the extra 10s of GBs of storage space on the game discs.
Nintendo made no mistakes with their system, they've proven that.
Xbox messed up be launching a little too early and making faulty units, and the HD-DVD drive sucked. By now, they should have made a blu ray version.
Sony shot themselves in the foot by building a way too expensive unit at launch (and the first few years) along with hardware that will never be fully used by game devs. Anyone who has heard any of the game devs that matter, talk on this issue, know its true. Sony did NOT listen to any game devs, and made their system too hard to code for.
I would say the original XBOX won.....
Worst controller ever after Gamecube's.
Like anyone will remember by then....
Worst controller ever after Gamecube's.
Agreed, the original (Fat) XBOX controller was one of, if not the worst controllers ever.
The slim XBOX controller, and then the 360 controller, in my opinion simply blow the PS3 controller out of the water. The analogue sticks feel, response and placement on PS2/3 controllers were always the deal breaker for those consoles, never as accurate or comfortable as the XBOX counterparts (the slim ones).
