Pope Says That Technology Cannot Replace God
He probably wouldn't approve of people calling the iPhone the Jesusphone...
On Palm Sunday, the Pope gave a sermon on how man must not believe that technology can grant him the powers of God.
"From the beginning men and women have been filled -- and this is as true today as ever -- with a desire to 'be like God', to attain the heights of God by their own powers," he said, according to Reuters.
"Mankind has managed to accomplish so many things: we can fly! We can see, hear and speak to one another from the farthest ends of the earth. And yet the force of gravity which draws us down is powerful," he said.
Pope Benedict said that the great advances in technology have improved the life of man, but has also increased possibilities for evil. He also pointed to the recent tragic natural disasters as reminders that mankind is not all-powerful.
The Roman Catholic leader said that those who wish to have relationship with God must "abandon the pride of wanting to become God."

technology (something real) can't replace god (something that doesn't exist), captain obvious!
Gravity powerful? So powerful the tiny magnetic field of a fridge magnet can overpower the gravitational field of an entire planet
On a more serious note: of course technology can't replace God. Technology is real, God is a belief (or rather a delusion).
I'd think the church had more important things to do than this. For starters, punishing the paedophiles in the church (and no, shipping them of to a nice monastery in southern France with about $3000 a month doesn't count).
oh so he stands by scientific theory now? i thought religion didn't believe in scientific theories like the theory of gravity or the theory of evolution
I wish him the best , I also wish he would be out of a job already ... Ah one can dream
True science cannot replace God, but science can help understand God, and his very existance, by proof. Either by science, or by other things.
"he Pope gave a sermon on how man must not believe that technology can grant him the powers of God."
You mean like the power to stop starvation, natural disasters, general suffering? "God" doesn't use those powers anyway. "He" only doodles pictures of the virgin mother on chips, potatoes, sandwiches, trees, etc. Technology could do that with a laser and it would actually look like someone instead of a random blob.
and god cant replace technology. so?
also " wielder of sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from god"
wait till we invent something to defy gravity!
i'm detecting some contempt for organized religion in this comment thread
he Pope gave a sermon on how man must not believe that technology can grant him the powers of God."
Thats like saying no matter how much i love my ipad it will never grant me power
If this thread is true,i guess God can replace technology to, if he wanted to.
And let's pray the Rep Jesse Jackson Jr doesn't quote you wrong by saying technology is killing God.
Can god create technology so effective that even god himself can't surpass?
Well he can talk the talk, but let's see him walk the walk... when our robot overlords come!
" He also pointed to the recent tragic natural disasters as reminders that mankind is not all-powerful." ...so is he saying that god caused the disasters? Why does he rely on technology to protect him in the pope-mobile, and not just his belief?
I'm surprised he didn't complain about how Steve Jobs and Bill Gates have broken the first commandment by raising themselves up to such an influence that they draw worship away from the lord.
"Pope Says That Technology Cannot Replace God"
Really?! What do you expect the pope to say?
Just wait for the iGod(TM) & iSermon(TM) and iBible(TM) Apps to come out...
Maybe he should visit Cupertino
If there's one person who wants to become 'god', it's the pope himself.
I'm glad I don't believe a god exists except in the fictional sense.
god doesnt exist, its just a fairy tale for the adults, like santa clause, get your head out of the sand, you old fool.
Interesting but the Pope is wrong. The non-religious growth rate is increasing faster than ever. The information provided by Technology is providing the means to truth which opens the eyes of many to see religion as the red tape that it is. I'm not saying it is replacing god in the technical since but instead replacing religion which is what I think the pope really meant.
Pope Says That Technology Cannot Replace God ......yet
Maybe he means the merge of civilization with technology the way Ray Kurzweil has predicted in "The Age of Spiritual Machines", http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_A [...] hines#2099
If so, then I will take my side with the contender, the technology
god doesnt exist, its just a fairy tale for the adults, like santa clause, get your head out of the sand, you old fool.
Thank you.
Of course the Pope is going to say that technology can't replace God. According to Catholic doctrine, the Pope is the vicar (replacement) of Christ, and therefore the closest thing to being a god on this earth. He's trying to make sure he doesn't lose his authority. It's all marketing.
Obviously the Pope hasn't seen 'The Lawnmower Man' back in '92 - technology can be used to replace God! Bwahahahahahahaha.... did I just hear my telephone ring?
Technology is real god isn't. So yes I guess technology cannot replace something that never existed to begin with.
A lot people here are stating that "god doesn't exist" or "its just a fairy tale for the adults" then how come this universe exist. I mean I thought in order for something to exist there has to be someone to make it.
What he's really saying is there's no technology that will make him able to control billions of people willingly. Religion and 'God' is just something to control the behaviour and habits of people without them knowing it.
