They just don’t make fighting games like they used to.

Okay, well maybe that isn’t exactly true after we got the carefully crafted Street Fighter IV, but the golden age of 2D fighters is certainly behind us. But that’s not going to stop the revivals!

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is one such classic, over-the-top 2D fighter from the good old days and, after much public clamoring and rumors, it’s coming to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network.

Capcom revealed that it’s developing MvsC2 based on the Dreamcast version’s codebase as it’s the preferred one by competitive players. Naturally there will be online play, courtesy of net code borrowed from Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix.

While the game won’t be getting the visual overhaul that SSF2THDR did, it should still receive a slight visual upgrade. Capcom wrote in its Unity blog, “The backgrounds in MvC2 are all 3D, and when rendered at higher resolutions look fantastic. The original textures and assets from the Dreamcast were actually much higher quality than the Dreamcast could really display at the time and when shown in HD, the impact is really quite amazing.”

Thanks to the 3D backgrounds, the field of view can be widened to incorporate the extra area afforded by widescreen TVs (the playing field will stick with the 4:3 aspect to retain gameplay). Check out another Capcom blog post on the new graphics filtering options.

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 should be headed to both Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network this summer. PlayStation 3 owners get a nice little exclusive as a playable demo is supposed to hit later this week.

I love my 360, but the controller for fighters just sucks. Microsoft really needs to work on that d-pad

Get a Hori fight stick and replace the buttons with Sanwa butons. I did and I couldn't be happier. My favorite fighting game of all time has got to be the Japanese import of Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter. Theres a speacial character in it called Norimaro, based on the Japanese comedian Noritake Kinashi. Instead of fireballs he throws random things like dolls and pencils and his special move has him doing random stuff like taking pictures and taking a bath. If you press start during the game he'll ask for the opponents autograph. Easily the funniest shit you'll ever see in a fighting game.

They should have Marvel vs. Capcom 3 already. Or at least bring out Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. But Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is awesome too.

First thought in my head "classic".

Second thought in my head "I wonder how many more people will play iron man heavily due to how kick ass the movie was?"

Search for a XBox 360 "Fightpad". It's made my Saitek/Madcatz, has got pretty good reviews and is geared towards d-pad play.

Yes, Madcatz hasn't always made wonderful controllers, but they did a pretty good job with this one. :)
