UK Street May Be Named After Lara Croft

2:50 PM - December 3, 2009 - By Marcus Yam - Source : Tom's Guide US

Lara Croft could be getting her own street.

While the Tomb Raider series fizzled out years ago (though it has made a respectable comeback recently), there's no denying the splash that Lara Croft made on the world of popular media. A video game character, besides just a pudgy plumber in red overalls, was able to crack the mainstream media and be recognizable.

The Tomb Raider series also influenced the games business to divert just a little attention away from muscle bound male protagonists and to buxom beauties--but Lara Croft was always the queen of them all.

Perhaps for that reason, Derby, a city in the UK, is considering naming one of its streets Lara Croft Way.

The connection between Derby and Lara Croft lies in now defunct game development studio Core Design, which created the Tomb Raider series.

Lara Croft Way? Is it a street full of gun stores, explosives stores, and wonderbra stores? That, indeed, would be the Lara Croft Way.

We have street named after JFK so I don't see why LC shouldn't have her own street.

soo-nah-mee :
I heard today on the Opie & Anthony show that Angelina Jolie gives frequent rim jobs to Brad Pitt and that's how they maintain a happy marriage. Is it possible Lara Croft earns landmark naming rights by performing similar acts on the British Minister of Street Naming? Hmmmm.

Brad Pitt looks miserable in every single photograph.

http://www.collegehumor.com/

Right hand side of the page and scroll down a bit to the "HOTLINKS" section. Look through there for the piece titled "Ruin a Poll: Lower right, vote 'Lara Croft Way'".

If you do decide to vote you will find that 97% of all the votes have gone to that name and that totals to 18,412 people. No other option has more than 250 people.

Genius use of viral marketing by Derby Council. Of course they knew that this would hit news sites and would cause thousands of people from around the world to visit the site and vote.

If I walk down Lara Croft Way, will there be an old butler following me, trying to offer me tea and crumpets?

Here in Greece the street I live on is called ( in Greek ) Great Alexander Street. Kids dont even have to ask about it.. You learn all about that national hero since a kid at school. The thing is future genrations will ask in the UK "Who is Lara Croft/ has achieved?" and I guess thats another way for their heros to be remembered by. ( Then again when i was in the US I knew you could just pay a fair price to name a highway after yourself.. lol so anyhow :P )

Wow, nostalgia thread!

I remember when the original TR came out and everyone insisted there was some sort of naked-Lara cheat if you pressed the right combination of buttons. Simpler times.

In related news they are also voting on the Mario Bros. Sewer and Waste Plant, Marcus Felix Shooting Gallery, Pamela Anderson Landing Strip, Master Cheif Space Center, and renaming planet Earth to World of Warcraft III (cause were the third planet from the sun).

Considering this is Britain, it's definitely a step up from names like Crotch Crescent and Butt Hole Road.

aaah yes I remember the first TR games- heck, I may even have them in storage somewhere. I can't even begin to imagine how many times I tried the "naked cheat." :D

Laura Croft is like a national icon. Aside from a gaping forehead, she is an actual good looking English woman.

Just imagine going a step further..and actually designing an entire street based on a game. Imagine GTA: San Andreas..Grove Street, for example. Could even make a film, similar to the one entitled' Nightmares', where a video game addict gets more than he bargained for in his efforts to get to the highest level of a game in the story, 'The Bishop of Battle'.

It would be a bit of a strange storyline, but I'm so sick of the usual junk coming from Hollywood these days I quite fancy something different..the hardware they got today, they could easily pull it off I reckon. The original film on which this theme is based seemed to do it quite well despite being made with 80's technology.

And for the Americans reading, Derby (the city) is pronounced "Darby", not "Durby" :)

(sorry, couldn't resist, technically incorrect as it is)
