iOS Rage Shootout: iPod 3G vs iPhone 4 vs iPad
John Carmack Says the iPad is More Powerful Than the Xbox and Wii
If you have an iOS-enabled device and you like games, you should check out Rage Mutant Bash TV for the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.
While iOS games generally lean on the more casual side of gaming, Rage is a little different thanks to it coming from id Software. For one, it's one helluva tech demo to show off to people.
John Carmack says that the A4 chip inside the latest generation of iOS devices is better than the previous generation Xbox and even the current Wii, but is still quite a ways away from the Xbox 360 or PS3. Still, Carmack says that even a game like Rage: Mutant Bash TV isn't even close to maxing out what the A4 chip can do.
We reviewed Rage last week just after it released, and our opinions haven't changed – it's a great fun and it's a good value at $1.99 for the HD version meant for iPad, iPhone 4 and the fourth generation iPod touch. There is a $0.99 SD version for the iPhone 3GS and the third generation iPod touch, however, that contains lower resolution assets that are made for the older displays.
Of course, anyone running one of the newer Retina Display devices or the iPad can purchase the $0.99 version too if they are on the budget. Carmack revealed that sales of the $1.99 version are far outpacing that of the SD version, but we still wanted to compare how the game looks across multiple platforms.
Check out the screen comparisons below:
Overall the look and feel of Rage: Mutant Bash TV is consistent regardless of platform, though the higher resolution textures really show through on the iPad version – even when compared to the iPhone 4. That said, it's worth paying just more than double for the HD version if you have a compatible device since it's only another dollar.

Looks great, but fps games like these need the good ol' tactile feedback to be properly enjoyed imo.
looks good but lets not forget this is all pre-processed and pre-baked visual effects...in anyways, clever method to bring good visuals to a useless piece of hardware...
I wonder what tegra 2 can pull

Wrong, these graphics are rendered in realtime, just like any PC game or console game you buy today.
Tegra 2 is designed to kick ass, so it better deliver.
Newsflash iPad chip better than 9 year old Microsoft console chip... Forgive me for not falling down in shock.

which that chip is based off a 1999 Celeron Processor.

no, what you are looking at in these graphics are pre baked lighting on top of textures, very similar to Mirror's Edge.

for those who are interested, take a look at TEGRA 2 running Unreal Engine 3.5 demo with pre-baked Global Illumination:

the only thing that me made me laugh was nVidia's marketing tone (Tegra 2 is comparable to 4 years old high end desktop) right... even ION 2 is not comparable to 7600 gt for that matter,,,

Mirror's Edge made by DICE, who also made BF:BC2 that also uses baking. And UE3 calls it cooking. As seen in the directory for UT3
chefs have a lot to say these days
Yeah, there are so many Tegra 2 devices out there. It must be difficult to pick which one to develop for.
"Still, Carmack says that even a game like Rage: Mutant Bash TV isn't even close to maxing out what the A4 chip can do."
If the chip is so good then why make this an on-rails shooter? That is only done when the chip cannot handle a full FPS experience.

Its on-rail you noob.
I was expecting a proper shootout... Frame Rates? anything?
This is just 3 pictures!
Can you run the HD version on a 3GS? Are the textures any better rendered? Lacking on details!
The Ipod touch 3rd gen 32-64 gb version and Iphone 3GS have basically the same hardware as the Iphone 4G and Ipod 4th gen. Both series have a Cortex A8 and a Powervr SGX 535 along with 256mb except for on Iphone 4G it 512mb but all of em support Open GL ES 2.0 oh and the prcessor speeds for the Ipod touch 4th gen and Iphone 4G are 1-800mhz and a constant 600 mhz for the Iphone 3GS and Ipod touch 3rd gen 32-64 gb. What boggles my mind is the fact that they would show the Ipod touch 3rd gen running Rage SD instead of it running Rage HD because the Ipod touch 3rd gen was built to run Rage HD, heck I'm running it on mine.
Ha Ha I doubt the A4 is better then a modified Pentium III and a geforce 256/3 hybrid or the Wii's PowerPC CPU...
I bought it (HD) is fun, but it I wish you could control the character more, instead of it being rail driven.

Dang I'm lit lol
I think the main reason why rage is on rails is because touchscreen controls are awkward and inefficient.
No proper FPS games work well with on-screen controls but the quality of the graphics has to be lower. Id had to compromise freedom for better graphics because the chip cannot handle the workload without dropping frame rates. Expect more on rails shooters to follow next year as everyone jumps onto the bandwagon of pleasing eye candy with no freedom of movement. They get boring pretty quickly
to Sudz
The HD version is only for iPhone4/iPad.(It doesn't work with 3GS)

Actually the HD woks on the 3GS but it will run slower.
This is what Carmack said:
"We wanted to make the HD version only for iPad and 4G, but there was no way to prevent a 3GS from buying it. We wanted a selector base either on ram > 128 or resolution > 480, but no such option exists,"
There are only two rail fos games that I can think of on app market and guess what they are both made by "id." Look up Epic Citadel and download it, the demo runs off the unreal 3 engine. I'll put an end to this debackle. Thats a freaken pc game engine running off either DX9 or 10 of which the little GPU can handle. Get use to the fact that the new handheld game age has emerged, and sa good bye to the PSP's crappy graphics.

I wouldn't call the PSP graphics crappy. It's the best in terms of handheld graphics nowadays but most of the games are still way better than the ones on the iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. The lack of proper controls will always be a problem. Also the PSP is 6 years old and there's a new on the way. So when the new console is launched we'll do a comparison.
^^
Above I meant: "It's not the best in terms of handheld graphics nowadays"
So... I've seen Epic Citadel and now Rage HD on the iPhone 4. Both look amazing - but, they are not what I would call "real" games. If the movement control of Epic Citadel was combined with the shooting of Rage HD - that would be a cool game.
