Apple Releases iOS 4 Update for iPhones

- By - Source : Tom's Guide US

New software for your iPhone. Now it can do more things!

It's finally here – the new operating system software that enables multitasking on the iPhone, but only if you have a 3GS. Those still running the iPhone 3G won't get multitasking, but will still get app folders, iBooks, improved Mail client, spellchecking, and other improvements. Sadly, those running the iPhone 2G EDGE are now left out in the cold.

Those who want to grab the update will have to update their iTunes software to version 9.2 before it'll be compatible with iOS 4.

Alternatively, those who wish to save the new iOS 4 first can check out the links below:

Actually, if you're willing to do a bit of hacking, there's a way to enable both backgrounds and multitasking on the 3G.

While I don't doubt that things are more cramped on the 3G's 128GB of RAM compared to the 3GS' 256MB, it seems that Apple could just be holding the 3G back for marketing reasons.

Free for iTouch 2G and 3G (generation)(sorry touch 1G is out of luck.. same as iPhone 1G). I believe at least the Touch 2G will not get the multitasking (not sure about touch 3G). However you may still have few upgrades like iBook, .....

Updated my iPod Touch, some nice little extras but its like Apple throwing a small bone to a anger dog to keep it quite for a bit. How about unlocking the rest of the hardware options!?!?

Got it running on my second gen Touch. Can't say it's particularly changed my experience in any meaningful way (as it indeed doesn't get wallpapers/multitasking), but the folders do their job.

Actually its most useful feature is that I get to bother my dad because his 1G iPhone didn't get a single scrap. :p

nvm

you have to sync your phone to your computer...then it prompts you to update to the new OS

Dude, just fire up iTunes 9.2 on your PC and it'll ask if you want to download if your 3GS is plugged in via USB. Duh.

Took some time to update about 45 min in total, phone sort of froze up for a few min was worried. Restarted and all is well, seem a bit snappier (32GB 3GS). Wallpaper stays behind icons, camera is quicker to load and snap pics. Multitasking is cool still playing with it. The BEST part is Windows 7 now recognizes my phone under portable devices when I plug it in to dock, this hasnt worked since Ive had 7, finally! Now I can click and drag pics and videos instead of emailing them to myself like before! Thanks Apple. But Im still leaning to the new DROID X with that huge screen...

It probably won't do anything for the "iTouch," considering that isn't a product made or marketed by Apple.

Marcus,

I jailbroke my phone twice and downloaded Backgrounder and enjoyed what little pleasure it gave, but it caused my phone to crash and I ultimately had to restore it...twice. Anyhow, I am not to big on multitasking ATM.

I am De-jailbreaking to install this.

never use any of the jailbreak features anymore except for an extra column, but with folders i don't need to worry so much about running out of space now.

It's been how many years for them to finally introduce multitasking? Frankly I see no reason to be excited. Oh no..it has a new wallpaper!

Frankly, I don't think you researched the capability of Apple's multitasking.

There is much to be excited about, iPhone users have waiting for this to be done right ... and it is finally here.

The original iPhone did not have the power to run multitasking, and neither does the 3G (I have one). The first real phone from Apple that had the potential to support MT was the 3Gs ... so why would Apple release an update to cripple the iPhone and iPhone 3G?

They did it right. Get over it people.

True, iPhone users (sadly) have to wait for so many years for this multitasking. Jailbroken iPhone users have been enjoying it (and you can argue and side with Apple that it's finally done right or whatever).

I see nothing wrong with multitasking with backgrounder. If the jailbreak community can work around apple's blockade to enable multitasking, I don't see why Apple itself cannot implement it in some ways before this.

To their credit, they did it now. But that's all to it, a 'new' function that I already have years ago in my JB iPhone. Yay!

Sounds like a decent update, will have to download it when I get home. No matter how much better it makes my phone, I'm still getting an Android when my contract is up (12 months left :( ).

Hello "multi-tasking" so lame... none of my apps do jack with it yet. And it isn't even true multi-tasking. it closes out my apps when I switch away from them so it basically is just a shortcut now since I have to start the app up again each time I go back. :(
